Hello,
This is my first posting. I am trying to get as much information as possible on families that lived or were associated with the croft at Broombank, Tarland, Aberdeenshire. We are now the owners of this property and are keen to understand as much about its rich history as possible. I have read with great interest a related topic http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=283410.0 (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=283410.0) which I was unable to reply to, since it was locked.
It's fascinating to see how many people are associated with the property. Clearly it is the Anderson family who have the historical links. It would be so interesting to be able to get a clear idea of who was the first person to live there, some accurate dates, and which subsequent family were born and raised there.

Some to get you started:
Aberdeen Journal, 26-3-1856:
CHILD BURNED. On the morning of 17th curt., Christian
Anderson, aged 4 years, child of William Anderson, crofter,
Broombank, Tarland, left in the house along with other
children, had her clothes ignited, and was so severely burned
that she survived only three hours. The poor child was
much burned about the head.
[I'm afraid that this, and scaldings, were all to common accidents to children.]
Mr Skinner bought an ox from Mr Anderson, Broombank, for £20 15/- at Alford cattle market on 6-9-1859.
George Smith, overseer to Mrs Anderson, Broombank, sold two queys for £33 10/- at Aboyne Mart on 11-11-1863.
Anyone having claims against Mrs Anderson, Broombank, had to lodge them with James Grant, Tarland, before 3-3-1871.
In October 1916, the Deeside District Military Tribunal gave Harry Anderson, crofter, Broombank, Tarland, temporary exemption until 28th May 1917.

Hello there - its been some time since I used Rootschat so apologies if this goes awry.
My husband Harry Andereson's family lived at Broombank for several generations and George Anderson and Isabella Coutts were his great, great grandparents. He has never actually been to Broombank but we have all heard many stories about it over the years and so its really interesting to see a picture - there were huge families living there at times, sometimes several generations - it must have many stories in its stonework. What sort of information are you looking for?

Some further areas of research for you to consider.
Valuation Rolls and electoral rolls are a very good source of infomation, based purely on address searches. Not sure where your nearest family history/reference library may be for the property, but these larger libraries often have these books going back a long way. Because you are searching by address, it is exactly what you need to find the property and its occupants.
Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk have a programme underway to provide, on a pay to view basis, images of the valuation rolls online on their site. Current years are:
1875 1885 1895 1905 1915 1920
You could fill in the blanks via the local reference library search.
GR2 has gone back into the 1850s with his reports. You could use this info to search on the censuses to give you more colour as to the people recorded as living there (currently available as I am sure you are aware from 1841-1911).
There will also be research posts by descendants like you are finding here and elsewhere (such as http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/localities.britisles.scotland.abd.general/6454/mb.ashx?pnt=1).
