Does anyone know of Mitcham Board School 1879ish where my ancestors went to school please, or where I might look for information about it.

Hi could possibly be Eagle House which stands at 224, London Road, Mitcham, it is now a special needs school, but was an orphans school and also a gentlemans school prior to this?

Have you your ancestors boarding at a school 1871/81 if so who were they?

findmyp@st has the admission records of Mitcham Board School from 1877 to 1899

Otherwise, as Keyboard86 suggests, the 1871 and 1881 censuses are worth checking.

Hope this helps

Most commercial sources have strict 'Terms of Use', which forbid publishing their data elsewhere, so asking for such look-ups is also asking people to ignore the 'Terms of Use'.

Hi,

A friend (sadly lost touch) used to be the senior Archivist for local history in Mitcham - she was based at Mitcham Librry - maybe a trip or call there could help.

Could this be a photo of it?

http://photoarchive.merton.gov.uk/collections/education/50936

It is now Benedict Primary School - Benedict Wharf off Church Road – formally Lower Mitcham
Board School; erected 1897 by Mitcham School Board.

A Board school wasn't a boarding school, it was just the first state run school, so the censuses would only tell you where they lived, not where they went to school.

That's absolutely brilliant, so thanks very much for that. One of the popular paying sites, which I won't mention for obvious reasons now has recently put school records online, which is really good. This is where I found my ancestor's school records.
regards.

Mitcham is South London, not far from Croydon. It used to be famous for lavender growing.
