Title: Marriage 1851
Post by: artisann on Thursday 06 November 14 12:48 GMT (UK)
Hi, I know Irish records can be difficult to search before certain dates....I have a marriage record dated 30 September 1851 for Marian(Mary) McConvell to John Campbell Strokestown Roscommon Ireland. I was wondering if anyone out there could possibly view any records to see if I can find out where Mary and John were born or if the fathers names are mentioned .
Many thanks in advance

Since the names are given in the Latin form then it's most likely the marriage took place in a Catholic church. Unfortunately, most R.C. marriages for that date do not give as much detail as civil marriage records.

Hello,

There are no parents given but the witnesses are:

Henrieo McConnell and Marianna McConville

Besides being in Latin, these names will have been transcribed but perhaps Henry should be McConnell and not McConville. :-\

It will be Henry and Mary Anne, I would say.

Heywood

Hi aghadowey
Thank you for replying ..I wasn't aware of the Latin names and the fact that marriage most likely had taken place in a RC Church...have learnt something from posting lol....it is also a possibility that the above couple came from the North and got married in Roscommon..that's really all I have to go on in finding where exactly they did come from....thank you again for reading the thread.

Griffiths Valuation shows a Bernard McConville in Bumlin  which is close to Strokestown.
There is also an entry for Campbell so the names are in the area.

Sorry hallmark I really didn't know why the names were spelled in Latin ..thank you for helping

As they have a child Bernard, there is a good chance that the Bernard McConville in Griffiths could be her father/ close relative.
However, it would be most difficult to go back a generation.

Many RC records will be in Latin in that era, a thing to look for in case your research becomes too easy!!  :-))

The Catholic parish of Strokestown was formerly called Kiltrustan, Lissonuffy and Cloonfinlough. It included the civil parishes of Lissonuffy, Kiltrustan, Cloonfinlough and part of Bumlin. There were chapels at Strokestown and Scramogue in Bulmin, and in Kiltrustan.

Thank you so much for the census links as I didn't know Bumlin parish and as to how they were linked I would probably not have made the connection to the family's....once again thank you for all you help ...it's really appreciated

Hello, I have been researching Campbells from Strokestown. To date I have found no connection between my family & yours. I have been supplied with the following details of the Children of John & Mary: (all births in Rooskey unless stated)
Annam Camel Campbell (sic) b 10/8/1858
Patrick Campbell b 17/11/1860 @ Strokestown Lissonuffy
Bernard Campbell b 16/5/1865
Bridget Theresa Campbell b 24/12/1867 d 1933 @ Massachusetts USA
John Campbell b 27/5/1870 d 5/11/1959 @ Kiltrustan Roscommon
Elizabeth/Eliza Campbell b 30/4/1872 d 24/10/1949 @ Listenmult Roscommon
Jane Campbell -no other details.
There were Campbells in the area on the 1749 Elphin Census so they have been there for some time. The local church records can best be described as shambolic and sadly are incomplete.
Regards
