My great grand uncle Etherell Savory died 23 Nov 1953 in Toronto. I'm trying to find where he is buried but unsure where to start.
In 1921 he was living 469 Queen Street E, Toronto but that's all I know. Later in life he went by the name Edward.
Just wondering if anyone could possibly help with a push in the right direction.
Thank you :)

Hi,
I checked the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail to see if I could find an obituary. I was unable to find one with a "name search", so I looked at all the obituary pages from Nov 23 - Nov 28 1953. I didn't see an obituary for him in either paper. :'(
I don't see him on findagrave either.
Sorry

Thank you so much for looking. I'm not 100% sure where he could be then. I know my mum spoke of his children moving to Florida. Also can't find anything for his wife Agnes Maria.
I'll just have to look a bit more into it..
Thank you again!

In fact, there's no definitive proof that the date I gave for his death is right ???

Thank you both so much! My Mum will be very happy to hear this.
I don't suppose there's anywhere online that has the burial records? Fingers crossed he has a headstone :)
Thanks again!

Hi,
I have looked for a headstone photo in the "usual" places - the Canadian headstones site, interment.net, findagrave etc. I don't see any photo for his stone. There is one in this cemetery for an Agnes Savory, wife of James Leith Leith. Is she one of yours??
http://www.canadianheadstones.com/on/view.php?id=301351
I looked at Agnes's obituary and she was first married to James L Leith, then to John Truckle. Hilda Dance (also on the stone) is her daughter. Agnes died in Port Perry.
Your best bet might be to contact the cemetery directly to see if they have any information about a grave stone for your Edward and Agnes. I posted the cemetery website earlier. :)

Well done RK - nice to find the Obit. ;D
Agnes Savory Leith looked a contender at one stage but apparently Agnes Dorothy Savory was born 28 Dec 1894 in Bonin Islands Japan.
The Leith family (James, Agnes and 3 children aged 7, 5 and 8 months, all arrived on a Canadian passenger List 27 June 1920 - Minnedosa - Liverpool to Quebec.
On the British Army Service Record Agnes Savory (spinster) married James Leith 15/5/1912 (Yoko Hama ?) Japan

A Canadian Passenger List which shows an Edward Savory - 18 CLR - O M F C (Overseas Military Forces of Canada) returning to Canada with other troops. 1st March 1919 - Belgic - Liverpool to Halifax Nova Scotia states Edward was going to a sister in Toronto ???
Sandra

HMM - interesting. I had wondered if Agnes Leith could have been a sister or a cousin, but I doubt it if this Agnes was born in Japan!!
Edward's Attestation papers say that he is married, and wife Agnes is in Hamilton, Ontario - in 1915.

From the passenger lists you found, it looks like his Agnes died between 1915 and 1928.

Thank you both. I've sent the cemetery an e-mail :)
I do know that Edward and Agnes had children but that's all I know. A family relative told us many years ago that they lived in Miami.
Been trying to find out abut Agnes but drawn a blank ???
-
Just received an e-mail back from the cemetery, they said that he is buried alone, next of kin was a Mrs Priscilla Loftus, I then checked the 1921 Census, and he is living with her. I'm assuming that him and Agnes separated.

IF this is your Edward - who was the sister living in Toronto ?
Sandra

Hi Sandra,
I think that might be another Edward Savory, all of our Edward's siblings stayed in the UK

Hi again,
Have you seen Edward's full military file? If not, you can see it here.
https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=215353
His next of kin is listed as wife Agnes in Hamilton, but on some papers as his sister Marie in Kings Lynn Norfolk. He has a Will in here leaving everything to his sister. Reading through the file - on a page called Separation Allowance (about 2/3 of the way through the file) is a note that says the pay to Agnes was "suspended wife misbehaving per ruling 8/9/17"

Hi again,
I just had a look on familysearch for records for people surnamed Savory, born in Hamilton after 1913 (if before, we would have been able to find a birth record).
There is a Lillian Emily Savery, who was born in Hamilton, ON on Sept 2 1915. She entered the USA at the Windsor/Detroit crossing in 1923 under the name Lillian Surridge. She married Jerome Sigmund in Detroit in 1939.
You can see her Petition for Naturalization on familysearch.
I wonder if she might be one of the children?
RK
-
Maybe not....I can see her with mother Emily Surridge and brother Ernest entering the USA in 1923. Mother doesn't appear to be Agnes.

Hi RK,
Was just having a look through the link you sent, it gave us a new address that we didn't know his sister lived at so thank you :)
Regarding his children, my mum was told by another family member that he had 1 boy and 1 girl, although nothing has been proven.
Thank you for your help, I'm not very good with searching records outside of the UK :)
