Title: Ohio death certificate
Post by: Matt R on Sunday 16 November 14 17:18 GMT (UK)
Hello all,

I have been doing some research on my McCartney's and I believe some of them moved to Ohio. Is there anywhere online where I could find information on deaths in Ohio but before 1908, when the online indexes begin? The year I am interested in is 1898 and I'm just wondering if anyone may be able to guide me to anywhere online that I may be able to purchase info from, or even order a certificate, please.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in anticipation,

Matt :)

Hi,

Can you give us a name and birth year so that we can have a look around for you ? Where were they living in Ohio ?

Ohio didn't require statewide vital registration until 1908, so a death certificate from prior to that time may not exist unless it was recorded on the local level.

You could try the database here - https://familysearch.org/search/collection/2128172  For other links by county, see http://www.deathindexes.com/ohio/

Thank you both for your quick responses!

The man I am looking for is Michael McCartney, who apparently died in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1898. He was born in Ireland (County Donegal I believe) around 1813. He was married to Bridget McCartney and came to America in the 1861-1880 period from  Scotland.

I'll check out the databases now. Thanks again for your responses :)

Matt.

There is a microfilm with the Family History Center that may cover the time/place you're looking for - https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/250868?availability=Family%20History%20Library  They have a photoduplication service that you may be able to use to check if you don't want to do it yourself - https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Photoduplication_Services
