I have found a family member who served in the RNVR in WW1 - Arthur Archbell - and I would like to know the interpretation of his entry in the Medal Roll, currently on FindMyPast:
P.O. (Petty Officer, I assume) T.Z/12192 - he received Medal "B", and the letter "S" appears in the "how issued or disposed of" column.
I can see his service record card - he served from 8 December 1917.

Hello,
Medal: B = British War Medal.
How issued: S = Self.

Thank you Hugh, I realised after I posted that the B was the British War Medal but was still unsure about the S. I'm assuming that "Self" meant that as he was still alive to receive the medal, it was not sent to relatives.

Yes that would be correct. If it was sent to a relative it would normally state in the 'how issued' column who it was sent to in abbreviated form.
