Well, i have gotten limited information from my mother about my grandmother. She said my Grandmother was born in November 1910's in Pontypridd.... Her name is Cecilia Probert maybe spelled Cecelia as well. Nothing can be confirmed because the grandmother wont talk about herself or her past. I know her father is "supposedly" named Harry and she has a Sister Anne or Annie....... she also has a brother, but not sure of his name either... either Harry or Leland. It's frustrating because she is tight lipped about nothing really... so if anyone knows of ANYTHING that may help, it would be greatly appreciated..

Hi
Welcome to rootschat :)
Do you have your grandmothers marriage certificate, it should give information on her father.
Who did she marry
-
Hi! And thank you. I actually have her marriage certificate and it doesn't list her fathers name at all. It lists her game as Cecilia H Probert..... No fathers name on it at all. She married my grandfather Luther A C Cooper from here in the USA in oxfordshire. My mother and Aunts have been trying to pump information out of her but she gives nothing at all. I guess they were able to get out of her that she grew up in shropshire..... But that could be more half truths.
-
Who were the witnesses to the marriage. Do you know what her middle name is, when is her birthday.
-
I'm sure I saw a Hilda C with mother's name same as surname in Pontypridd on FreeBMD this morning.
Will need to check
Sorry it wasn't - got two mixed up ::)

That's usually a sign of an illegitimate birth?! ::)
And that's probably why she doesn't want to say anything?

Does it give her mothers name ? there is a marriage 1919 in Atcham Shropshire for a Harry J Probert and a Harriet Haycock
-
Hi Biscuit,
Is your Grandmother still alive ???
Regards

Anything is possible at this point.... It's a total dead end. I ordered the marriage certificate and there is nothing on it about fathers name or mothers name. I can't find a birth certificate at all. My mother didn't even know her maiden name until she was in her 20s. It lists her middle name as H on the marriage so my mother says "Hope" but on the passage to USA it lists it as I.... So "Irene". What's even stranger, my mother doesn't really see this as odd.... My grandmother has never said anything about her past or where she's from or even her birth date. My mother swears it's November 29,1914, but her marriage certificate in 1943 to my grandfather shows her age as 24 which would mean she was born in 1919 but I can't find anyone with her name anywhere born in 1914 or 1919. Up until a few years ago she didn't even admit to being Welsh..... She always said she "hated" the Welsh....... So strange. It's like she is hiding something.

Yes.... She is still alive.... If her birth date of 1910's is true then she is X this year on the 29th of Nov

There is a passenger list to New York giving a last address of 67 Church Road, Tilehurst, Reading in June 1947 and she gives her age as 27. Also 3 children one named after father.
-
Yea that's her... She came here with my mother and her brother and sister... I'm sure that's where she was living after they married. My mother seems to remember Harry being on the marriage certificate. She also said that my Grandfather never met her father or mother...

I'm limited to Ancestry.com over here for research.... Can't see a whole lot. Are there any other sites or databases I should look at?
-
Hi Biscuit
I am sorry but we have a 'no living people' policy here so the post will have to be edited.

There is a birth registered June qtr 1919, Pontypool which looks interesting.
Because of the "No Living Persons" policy, you'll have to look it up yourself?
Try FreeBMD.org.uk! ;D
Can I just add: my grandmother was a "Ciceley" and was often called "Cissie"!! ;D

Ok well thanks so much for the help.... I guess once she does her secrets die with her and I can start over. :). I'll check out the link.

That's simply not true!
You can use:
FreeBMD.org.uk (and sister sites (FreeCEN and FreeREG)
FamilySearch
Many pay sites let you see their indexes free (I use FindMyPast this way!).
Finally, can I reiterate?
You need to be very sensitive here.
Obviously your grandmother doesn't want people to know her past?
She may feel ashamed about it?
Especially if, as I suspected, she was born illegitimate?
Tread very carefully!
P.S. How did you come by the information that she was a Didcock?

How old was your grandfather? if he was younger than her maybe she shaved a few years off her age
-
I'm also puzzled about the new surname

Was she married to a Probert previously?

Hi
"but on the passage to USA it lists it as I.... So "Irene"."
This passenger record, arrival date 21 Jan 1946, for a Cecilia I Cooper, b 1911 states she was born in Mexico, so may not be related to your research

Is this a possible birth for her?
Births Sep 1923
Probert Cecilia J Probert Warminster 5a 211
The J could be mistaken for an I
I read that record as her Mother being unmarried, hence the double Probert.
