I require any information on James Darling & Parents, born c1829 Dunse Berwickshire.
James moved to Holy Island and married a Margaret Shell.
Regards Bonzo
-
If he died from 1855 onwards then his parents names and mothers maiden name will be shown on his death cert. Same info is found on any marriage cert from 1855 onwards

Hi Bonzo
Where did James marry? Where is the reference to Duns from as a birth parish for him?
There are a number Darling families in Berwickshire. Also a few James Darlings in the right sort of age group. Thinking you might need to at least confirm some detail for him to ensure you are following through on the right line.
Assuming he was still in Scotland for 1841, there is this entry for example:
John Darling 40 agril lab.
Elizabeth Darling 40
John Darling 15
James Darling 14
Thomas Darling 11
Address: Kidshiel Haugh, Duns
Could it be this entry for example for the family above https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTBC-PZQ
Just guesses really until we have something to be definitive about...
Monica :)
Added: might have to scratch through that family group if this info is correct and been verified https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/MW47-BXV

Bonzo, not sure if this is your family tree here http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/74158986/person/42289635900
Some census entries also show here:
1861 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7KH-RW8
1871 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V51F-6NR
1881 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XQZM-BG6
Have not been able to find the marriage on www.freebmd.org.uk Doesn't help in respect of trying to at least confirm his father's name :-\
Also, haven't yet seen on these census entries the ref to Duns or Berwickshire...but sure you must have one ;)

Hi Monica.
I believe the family you have shown on the 1841 census is the correct one and also the 1861 census on Holy Island with James and family, I have him on all census with 1901 the last one.
the reason I believe this is correct another James Darling born around the same time in Duns
parents George & Elizabeth on the 1841 census are still with parents in Scotland on the 1851
census.
A James Darling single born Duns is on the 1851 census for Holy Island.

Hi
The 1881 entry above shows him b Holy Island Northumberland but the 1861/1871 shows Scotland.
Can you confirm that those entries are the James Darling you are researching?
What was Margaret's maiden name? If you don't know - a copy of one of the children's birth certs will give that info
Births December qtr 1852
Mary Ann Darling Berwick 10b 247
Births March qtr 1855
Margaret Darling Berwick 10b 272
Births December qtr 1856
Thomas Darling Berwick 10b 268
Births June qtr 1859
Jane Darling Berwick 10b 295
No obvious marriage in Northumberland so it may have been in Scotland but you will need Margaret's maiden name to confirm that
-
He died in Newcastle upon Tyne early 1900,s
The only James Darling anywhere near his birthyear died 1907 Newcastle but his birthyear was 1835 - not 1829/30
That birthyear matches the 1901 entry where he is again just shown as b Scotland
1891 shows birthyear as 1831 and again - just Scotland so where did you get his birthplace as Duns from?
-
Hi Carole.
On the 1851 census James Darling living on Holy Island place of birth Duns Scotland
Regards bonzo

:P 1851 was the only one I didn't look at yesterday. Dunse it is then :)

It's indexed as Dasse but image shows Dunse.

I believe the family you have shown on the 1841 census is the correct one and also the 1861 census on Holy Island with James and family, I have him on all census with 1901 the last one.
I think the family I posted for 1841 is not the right one for your James. There looks to be quite a bit of research on this family group.
As I posted earlier, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/MW47-BXV I think this relates to the James we had in that earlier 1841 entry. Mother Elizabeth died in Scotland it seems in the 1840s. Father John and sons headed off to the US it seems. See http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=39725842
So, I think we still need to find James in 1841 (Scotland or England really). By the sounds of it, his marriage to Margaret has still not been found?

Hi.
I believe his marriage may be a irregular or clandestine marriage.
regards bonzo

Original post shows her surname as Shell. There is a Margaret Shiel aged 26 b Berwick on the 1851 census and there is a marriage for a Margaret Shiels in Berwick in the June qtr 1851 which I looked at yesterday.
I double checked the full GRO index but her reg details do not link to a James Darling
-
The Scottish 1851 and 1861 has a James Darling b Dunse as well but he was b 1834
The Northumberland 1841 has a James Darling b 1832 Scotland with parents David and Alison
Only the 1871 shows your James b 1829. All others seem to be 1831/32
-
There is this family info for David Darling and Alison Young https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/SGLD-PB7
Reference to Duns there in the children's births but stops at the entry for a John in 1830.
Have to say, there is nothing in the childrens' names for James and wife Margaret so far that gives any clues on his parents' names linked back to any family we have seen so far (if he followed any form of Scottish naming pattern...but maybe he didn't, not all did).

This could be total red herring but James and Margaret look like they have twin boys. Could James himself be a twin? In 1851 there's a James Darling age 27 along with a John Darling age 27 (both agricultural labourers) living in the household of an Isabella Weatherhead, innkeeper and farmer, Whiteburn, Westruther, Lauder, Berwickshire. The two lads are showing both born Lauder, 1834 (I know this is a bit out for their ages).

Hi Monical.
1841 Census Kidshiel Haugh Duns Berwickshire
John Darling 1801
Elizabeth Darling 1801
John Darling 1826
James Darling 1827
Thomas Darling 1830
As you say the father and other sons may have emigrated to USA as I cannot find them
on the 1851 census for England & Scotland

Yep, that is the family group. The James, son, from this family is the one that is stated as marrying an Elizabeth Harris, from the links above. Quite a lot of research into this family it seems.
Do not think this is your James.... :-\

Hi monical.
I think you are correct its not the family I am after, I will look at two more James Darling
born in duns around the same time.

With regard to your search, James Darling was my great Grandfather. His daughter Susan was my
Grandmother who was born on Holy Island.
-
Hello I believe the Darling family are my great grandparents from Holy Island.
jAmes Darling moved from Duns as a young man to work on one of the farms on
Holy Island ( also known as Lindisfarne). He married a local girl Margaret Shell and had
a number of children - one of which was my Grandmother Susan Darling. At some
Stage she came to Newcastle, met and married my Grandfather (Thomas Allan)
We still go to the Island regularly and the Darling Shell families are well known
there. I do have other information including photos. Hope this is of interest to you.
