Hi Elaine,

Frederick Slingsby and Jane Marshall were my husband's 4x Gt Grandparents.

I have had quite a lot of conflicting information about Frederick's parents. I know his father was Samuel but I'm not too sure who his mother was and whether he had any brothers or sisters.

I have looked on the census and the only Frederick I can find is the son of a Mary who was a widow on the 1851 and 1861 census. I have Samuel's death as 1898 so I know that this Frederick is not the right one.

Do you have any info to help me out please?

Thanks

Jo

Hello Joanne

The information that I have so far is:

Married Jane Marshall, born 1845 Willesborough, Kent
1881 census shows Frederick, Jane and 3 children living at 43 Upper Denmark Road, Ashford. William aged 40, carpenter and joiner. Jane aged 37.

Jane Marshall's parents:
William Marshall married Bathsheba Baseden (no further information)

Frederick's parents:
Samuel Slingsby, born 1807 Kingsnorth, Kent. Died 23 February 1898, Kingsnorth, Kent.
Married Mary (unknown surname)

Samuel's parents:
Joseph Slingsby born 9 August 1778, Kingsnorth, Kent
Married: Mary White (no further information)

Joseph's parents:

Any further information welcome.

Best wishes.

Elaine

Hi Elaine,

Thanks for the info. I have had a good look at the census's and I think I may have found something.

1841 Census:
Head- Samuel Slingsby, 30, Ag Labourer, living in Kingsnorth
Wife- Sophia Slingsby, 25,

1851 Census:
Head- Samuel Slingsby, 41, Farm Labourer, living at Court Lodge, Kingsnorth
Wife- Sophia Slingsby, 39,
Dau- Charlotte Slingsby, 7
Uncle- William Slingsby, 63, Farm Labourer

1861 Census:
Head- Samuel Slingsby, 51, Shepherd, Widower, Living at Court Lodge, Kingsnorth
Dau- Charlotte Slingsby, 17, House keeper
Neice- Margaret Bishopp, 25, Dom Servant

1871 Census:
Head- Samuel Slingsby, 64, Shepherd, Living at Court Lodge, Kingsnorth
Wife- Mary Slingsby, 50

1881 Census:
Head- Samuel Slingsby, 73, Labourer, Living at 1 Victoria Cottages, Ashford
Wife- Mary Slingsby, 68
Dau- Harriett Wanstall, 38
Grandson- Frederick Wanstall, 5

1891 Census:
Head- Samuel Slingsby, 83, Living on own means, Living a 1 Victoria Cottages
House Keeper- Mary Gaunt, 70,

Going on the above, Samuel was married before to a Sophia and going on the dates, Frederick's mother was Sophia not Mary. I can't find Frederick on the 1841 or the 1851 census but I have found him on the 1861 census.

Servant- Frederick Slingsby, 17, Carter, Living at Lodge Court, Kingsnorth

It seems a coincidence that he works and lives with a family who live in the same road as his parents.

Also, I have Jane Marshall's birth certificate and it states her mother was Sarah Wackford. Maybe William re-married also?

I hope you can make sense of what I have written.

Thanks again

Jo

Hi elaine,

I'm Peter from Maidenhead.
From the information you have provided, I'm hoping you are Elaine Slingsby who parents are Ron & Ida?

I'm the son of Marilyn Read, who's mother was Winifred Papps (Nee Harding), who sister was Anne, who married into the Slingby family.

If you are the right Elaine then we have probably met a long time ago !!

I'm also working on my family history so can probably share lots of information.

Appologies if it's not you, but a Harding & Papps in Berkshire sounds very familiar....

Rgds,

Peter

hello,
I seem to be from a different set of ashford slingsbys again - my grandfather (Alfred Ernest) lived in Willesborough.
Don't know if there is any connection

Just joined and noticed hazel bevis is a contributor to this thread. I have only just found a connection to the Bevis' from Kent. My connection is Cecilia Pettit who married John Bevis in Sussex which has led me to their daughter Mary Elizabeth who married Josiah  Bowering (Bowring) and lived in Oldham.
Cecilia was the sister of Alfred Pettit/Pettett, my husbands gggrandfather, a transported convict to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania) in 1840
Any connection to Cecilia and John Bevis?
