JAMES KING FERGUSON born in 1823. married a Sarah Wiley, daughter of John Wiley in 1868 in Londonderry.
Trying to find out more on James King Ferguson. Where he married and date of death and children, parents. I can't find anything on him.
I originally posted this under Ferguson's, Newtownlimavady but it may not have been seen.

The marriage took place in Londonderry Civil Registrars Office on 9 Jul 1868.

Who would I need to contact to get a certificate of this marriage? Any idea what details may be on that certificate? I wasn't aware that Registry Offices were around in 1868. Why would someone marry there and not in a church back in 1868?

Hi,
I believe that registry office marriages started in Ireland in 1845. A photocopy of the marriage certificate can be obtained from the GRO Roscommon foe 4 Euros. Why marry in a registry office?- I should think for the same reasons as people do today.

Registry Office marriages were actually more common in the mid-late 1800s than today mainly because many ministers were not authorised to perform legal weddings so a couple had to got to registrar for the legal ceremony and then often had a religious ceremony in their own church. The church marriage would usually be recorded in the church records and if there was an announcement in the local newspaper it would give the place as the church.

In addition to getting a photocopy from GRO Roscommon, you can also view the marriage certificate on-line for £2, on the GRONI site:
https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk
You need to register and then use the search marriages option.
The information you’ll normally get is: date and place, the couples names, their ages (though often this is just “full age” ie 21 and over), previous marital status, occupation, residence at the time of marriage, father’s name and occupation, the couples signatures and that of their 2 witnesses.

I seem to have a problem obtaining a copy of the certificate for James & Sarah. I rang GRO from Australia but wasn't sure where in Ireland I was and the lady told me to go to www.groireland.ie and download a form and fill it out and fax it. I cannot find where on this site to find the form I need yet alone download it. I have been clicking on different things and am ending up all over the place. She said it would cost 4 euro.
Is there anyone there than can send me the link please or help.

If you read the replies you can see 2 options were mentioned-

2) GRONI, Northern Ireland view certificate online for £2

If you click on the link and when the site comes up scroll down slightly. There is a heading "General Registry Office" and under it there is a heading "Apply for Certificates". This is where you can find the form.

Thanks Morrison. I have just worked it out and managed to download the form. I was almost ready to give up. Bed time now so I will get onto it tomorrow.
