Mary Roulling was married to James Bekie on 14.1.1761 at Stromness. I am trying to find out the origin of the name of Roulling and whether anyone has any relatives by that name.
Regards,
Alister

Given the many spelling variants, I would suggest that Rowling would be a surname worth considering.

On the 1821 census for Stromness and Sandwick there are quite a few people by the name of Rouland so could be a version of that. In Stromness in 1821 in District 1 Property Number 429 - 284 there is a family with a Janet Baikie, widow aged 63 living with Robert Rouland aged 40 sailor, Christian Laughton 32 and James Rowland aged 2

ScotlandsPeople index has James Bekie and Mary Roulling. Useful if the original poster can say whether name is clearly Roulling.
George F Black's Surnames of Scotland has nothing like Roulling, does not include Rowling, but has Roland, Rolland, Rowan and Rowand.

Let us not forget the very successful J. K. Rowling.

Checked the actual entry - it is a very clear Roulling , area where they were living was Quome, so I think this corresponds with family later recorded as Rowland.
