I have been searching for about 40yrs now for a Birth Entry for my late Grandfather, William James Wilson (1860 - 1937).
On both the 1901 and 1911 Censuses he gives his POB as Manchester Lancs...
However, I have never been able to find a Birth Entry for him:-(
It has been suggested to me that some of his son's middle names might have links to the Isle of Man...
They were: William Havelock Wilson (1894 - 1974)
Evan Douglas Wilson (1896 - 1957)
Ernest Rencella Wilson (1897 - 1957)
George Felix Wilson (1900 - 1970)
Richard Wilson (1902 - 1959)
Archibald Wilson (1903 - 1930)
Can anyone on here see any Manx links please? (William James Wilson settled in Swansea when he Married Margaret Rees in Swansea in June 1893, and all of his sons were born in Swansea. He was a Painter and Decorator).
Cheers, Romilly.

Can't see it myself. Sure, Douglas is on the IoM but it's hardly an unusual name, and I can't see any links with Rencella or Havelock.

Apparently Mount Havelock is in Douglas and there is a place called Rencell (Laxey) on the IOM.

Isn't this a better fit?
Births, September qtr 1859
Manchester district vol 8d, page 138
Wilson, James William
-
Havelock is a surname found in Glamorgan and other parts of Wales so I'd be inclined to look for a link there.

I'm fairly certain that I have previously ordered that Cert and that it didn't fit with the info on the Marriage Cert.

Welsh naming patterns seem to have been followed to some extent here and so I would expect William Havelock to come from the paternal side.

Mount Havelock in Douglas was so named c.1857 at time of Indian Mutiny and so named after Sir Henry Havelock who was responsible for relief of Lucknow that year + died shortly afterwards - no Manx connection I can see

The 1859 birth is on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk and shows mmn was also Wilson which could possibly suggest that child was illegitimate.
Are you working from a fathers name on his marriage cert?
What about earlier census entries as you only mention 1901/1911

Yes Carole,
I'm working from Father's info on William James Wilson's Marriage Cert.
I'm completely unable to find him anywhere before his Marriage in Swansea in 1893.

So what was the fathers name and occupation given on the 1893 marriage cert?
IF - he was illegitimate, there is always the possibility that he was not born as Wilson but perhaps took a stepfathers surname if his mother married a Wilson.
What you also need to bear in mind is that failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/75 so prior to that date there are thousands of unregistered births

On his Marriage Cert he gives his Father as 'William Wilson (Deceased) Occupation: Mason'.
The problem is that there isn't a Mason called William Wilson with a son William in Manchester in 1861 or 1871.
I suspect that he was probably illegitimate, but I don't have a Mother's name.
He's fairly definite about having come from Manchester on the 1901 and 1911 though.
