Title: What Happened to Richard Oates?
Post by: ctrunfree on Tuesday 25 November 14 03:24 GMT (UK)
Richard Stevens OATES married Susan POLLARD at Chacewater on 22 Dec 1872 (Cornwall OPC website).

It looks like she is listed as a widow at the 1881 Census at Gwennap (RG11/2328), with 4 children 8 and under. (The last, listed as WP Oates, was christened William Pollard OATES, which is a bit of a clincher).

However, I can't find a death for her husband Richard.  Can anyone else?

The place and date are right, but surely his wife wouldn't have allowed them to get that wrong.  Hope she had better luck with the stone mason! :)

Not sure that a widow with 4 children under 8 could have afforded a headstone (unless Richard was a landowner or something!)

Modified to add : - Ah, I see she is an annuitant in 1881, so maybe I misjudged her.
Have you looked for a Will for Richard - either as Oates or Stevens?

Can't see any Wills on the OPC Cornwall or Ancestry websites.  There are two trees on Ancestry in which he is mentioned but both have different, and wrong, spouses.

Found him!  Richard OATS aged 37 Sep Q 1881 Redruth.  Must think more laterally in future!

EDIT: although this would indicate he was still alive at census time on 3 April, when she's already a widow.  ???

When and where was Richard born?

Thank-you

he was baptised 10 May 1843 aged 5 weeks in the Truro Wesleyan Methodist Circuit, son of Joseph & Elizabeth, residence Kenwyn. Baptism for older brother Joseph in 1837 shows Joseph senior as a miner. Probable marriage for parents Joseph Oates & Elizabeth Stevens 21 May 1823 in Kea.

Hmm.  While St Day and Gwennap are only 3 miles apart, if he was buried in July it can't be Susan POLLARD's Richard.  And there is an aged Richard STEVENS living in Redruth at the 1871 Census, who may well be the man registered in 1878.

There's also the possibility that "widowed" meant "separated"-its happened before in my tree.  But I can't find any likely suspects for Richard in the 1881 Census anywhere (there is a Richard OATES of the right age living in Redruth but he has a wife and established family).

Will have to keep looking.
