Title: Help with the children of George and Mary Ann
Post by: Greaves on Wednesday 26 November 14 12:25 GMT (UK)
George Archer (1833-1907) and Mary Ann Steward (1836-1886) were my Great Great Grandparents. They lived in Hornchurch and had 10 children, some of whom seem to disappear from the record: George Archer (1861-1941), Rhoda Archer (1863-1935), Harry Archer (1865-?), Charlotte Archer (1867-?), Frank Archer (1860-1953), William Archer (1869-?), Eliza Archer (1871-?), Alice Archer (1874-?), John Archer (1877-?) and Annie Archer (1878-?). The problems are:

Harry Archer: m Mary Ann Roberts 1892. Some records suggest he also married Ellen Brown in 1902, but the census seems to indicate that he was still with Mary Ann in 1911.
Charlotte Archer: last seen in 1891 census working as a servant in Paddington. Did she marry? When did she die?
William Archer: last seen in 1901 in Hornchurch. Did he marry? When did he die?
Eliza Archer: last seen in 1881 in Hornchurch. Did she marry? When did she die?
Alice Archer: last seen in 1901 census working as a servant in Bloomsbury. Did she marry? When did she die?
John Archer: last seen in 1901 census living in Newbottle, Brackley. Did he marry? When did he die?
Annie Archer: last seen in 1901 census working as a servant in Richmond, Surrey. Did she marry? When did she die?

Despite searching extensively, I can see to make no progress with tracing these relatives. Any suggestions or insights would be most welcome, as would any sightings.

In 1901, Alice was working in Holborn.
So this marriage looks like a possibility?

The reply for Charlotte looks a real possibility, whilst both the possible deaths for William look possible. I guess only ordering the certificates will give me a chance of knowing for sure.

The possible marriage for Alice again looks possible, except I can't find an entry for Alice Bray or Alice Porter born in Hornchurch in the 1911 census.

Many thanks for the leads so far. Any more contributions are welcomed.

Help - it has been pointed out to me that there were two Harry Archers living in Hornchurch in 1911, both born in 1865. One was living at North Street, who was married to Ellen Brown in 1902. And another living in Dockrills Cottage, who was married to Mary Ann Roberts in 1892. I have no idea which one is mine!

My one was born in Hornchurch in 1865 to George Archer and Mary Anne Steward. He had - or so I believe - four brothers (George, Frank, William and John) and five sisters (Rhoda, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Alice and Annie). The eldest brother George was my direct ancestor.

The military information to be found on Ancestry only confuses matters. The 1889 attestation gives his father as George living in Tottenham, an area heavily associated with my family, though the 1881 and 1891 censuses show his father living at North Street in Hornchurch. It also suggests that he was born in Tottenham, which I believe to be wrong. On the other hand, it lists his brothers and sisters correctly. A later attestation in 1915 has him living in North Street in Hornchurch and states that his wife is Ellen Archer.

How do I find out which Harry Archer is mine?

Moreover, there appear to be two possible deaths: 1949 and 1951. Once again how do I discover which one is which?

See who is named as father on each marriage cert?

See if either or both left a Will?

Thanks for this. I have looked at the probate record, but I'm still not sure. I think I will have to order the certificates.

Unless anyone has any other ideas.

I know its been a while, but I am still trying to find out more information about Harry's wife, Ellen Brown.

So far I know she was born in Chelsworth, Cosford, Suffolk in 1857 to John BROWN and Mary Ann WHYATT.

The 1861 and 1871 censuses found her living with her parents in Chelsworth, aged 3 and 14. By the 1881 census she was working as a servant in the KILTON household in Ipswich.

I then lose her until her marriage to Harry in 1902, which took place at Romford RO. She was then aged 37 and a spinster. I have wondered why the marriage was at a RO rather than a church. Was one of them trying to conceal a previous marriage?

I would like to know where Ellen was in 1891 and 1901.
