Guys, I am compiling a book of those from Newmains / Morningsideand Cambusnethan and am stuck with one of the guys, a William Vincent. I have no address, no age, no rank or brigade.
There is another Vincent on the memorial, a Malcolm Vincent could it have been his brother?
He had emigrated to Canada and he also fell. Any help would be appreciated.
The book is not for profit by the way.

I'm doing this work in conjunction with Joe and only got an additional bit of info this morning. On the 1881 census he was aged 1 staying with family at Stonecraigs Newmains. He was born in Auchinleck. Thanks

Looks like you are right on the button with our man Vincent.
By the time the Great War comes around he would be roughly 34 ish, I imagine he would be married by then?? and possibly have moved away?? I have checked on the Commonwealth War Graves and I can't tie any of them down to being our man William Vincent.
Looks like I'll need to keep looking

I just read it again, there was a Benjamin Vincent from Craigneuk, Wishaw who fell during the Great War. I wonder if these ones are cousins....or is Helen Vincent, William Vincent's wife.
As with all genealogy....more questions than answers.

Guys, I really have hit a wall with William Vincent, I'm not that sure (although he is named on the Newmains War Memorial) that he served. I can't get him on Scotland's People as a Great War return (death), I have searched but can't find his wife remarrying (I know it didn't happen in all cases), unless of course she remarried under her maiden name again? looks like she didn't die in Lanarkshire but possibly in 1927 in Glasgow, Wilhimenia Vincent, but the age doesn't add up.
The two kids, Thomas aged 4 on the 1911 Census possibly got married in Shotts 1931, Roseanna aged 2 on the 1911 Census I can't find her death in Scotland. Although I have a match for Thomas it is possible his wife had moved down south, or abroad. Any ideas, although I can't think of any that would give me William Vincent's army regiment.

I have the 1925 Wishaw directory. There is a William Vincent, engineer, living at 4 Kennedy St.

The one living in Kennedy St could be the son of John and Isabella, surprising that I don't get him on the armed services returns as dead. The memorial could be wrong of course!

Could he have died from wounds and his name added to the memorial at a later date?

If he died after 1925 he should be on Scotlandspeople
The son of Thomas and Annie was a furnace filler
The son of John and Isabella was a Boiler fireman (retrd) when he died 1955

I searched for his death, albeit in Lanarkshire he would need to have died before the end of 1922 I think to be included on the memorial. It looks like his son Thomas married in Shotts in 1931, I wonder if the family had moved to Shotts

I don't have access to these? What I can tell you however is -
I found 2 marriages in Cambusnethan for the name William Vincent
1905 VINCENT WILLIAM BROWN WILHELMINA CAMBUSNETHAN /LANARK
I also found the above couple on the 1911 census with 2 children Thomas and Roseanna
There are no marriage or death records in Scotland for the daughter Roseanna
I can't see a death record for Wilhelmina in Scotland using her maiden name as an additional search.
It looks like the family left Scotland after the 1911 census but I can't find a passenger record for them so maybe they went to England for William to work in a steel works there.
I couldn't find a passenger record for his Brother Malcolm going to Canada but found the family on the 1911 Canada census. As you know Malcolm enlisted there and died of Appendicitis on 31 July 1918 in Granville Canadian Special Hospital, Buxton, England.
I found a passenger record for his wife and children returning to Scotland on 4 September 1919 and gave their address as Main Street, Newmains
The CWGC gives her address as 79, Norfolk Rd., Byker, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England.
Maybe she moved there to be near Wilhelmina and her family.

Guys, thanks for all the help. William Vincent served withe South African forces during the Great War and died. His brother Malcolm served withe Canadians and also died, he is buried in Derbyshire. I think I now have details on the guys who are named on the Newmains, Morningside and Cambusnethan war memorials. Over 170 men are named yet many more made the ultimate sacrifice. You mentioned you hadn't traced a marriage or death for Roseanna. But it doesn't matter - this isn't the Roseanna you were referring to. I made a mistake.

Hi Swally, It is very possible that Malcolm Vincent was his brother. I think this Malcolm Vincent was my grandfather. Malcolm was the son of Thomas Vincent and Ann Fisher Vincent. I have copies of birth and marriage certificates. Malcolm and Helen Vincent went as missionaries from Scotland to Minto, New Brunswick. Malcom died in WWI and my grandmother returned to Scotland, and then to Newcastle after the War.

Swally, Unfortunately, I have no photographs, only copies of the marriage certificate of Thomas and Ann Vincent, Malcom Vincent's birth certificate. I have tried to send you copies but I get an error message saying the files are too large and I don't know how to reduce them Regards, Dina
