Hi, I'm trying to find more about the life of Wilfred Kendall CHARGE who emigrated to Canada from Durham, England in 1905. He was born in 1882 in Gainford, Co. Durham and in the 1901 census he has an occupation of "Draper's Assistant". When he went to Canada in 1905 he is shown as being a Labourer! He returned to England for a visit in 1908 and now is shown as being a Store Manager. He Married Margaret MOWAT in 1909 in London, Ontario. All I have been able to piece together from the Arrivals & Departures from England is that he became a Draper's Buyer. At some time he started working at the T.Eaton's store, and eventually became a Director. He died in 1962 in Winnipeg at the age of 80. I know that Eaton's went bankrupt in the late 90's, so I don't think I can find out anything there. If anyone can help me to find out more, I would be very grateful, and can do look-ups here in England. At the moment I'm doing some transcribing (for FreeReg) from an earlier transcription of the Parish Records for Romaldkirk in North Yorkshire. I started doing that as I couldn't find anything about Wilfred's Grandmother Ann KENDALL (my 2 x G Grandmother) anywhere!
Hoping that someone can help.
Regards,
Keith

Hi
Going further back you might be interested to read the will of Jonathan Kendall (1839) on the NE inheritance database as his niece Ann Charge is one of the legatees. His wife Jane (ms Parkin) also left a will. Jonathan was born in Romaldkirk c 1770, married Jane in Hamsterley and was a farmer in the Hamsterley/ Staindrop area of co Durham. Through his wife the Kendalls also had an interest in the coal company Hardy, Kendal and Hodgson which ran Crake Scar colliery.

Yes, this is true. His obituary is in the Globe and Mail newspaper on April 25, 1978. John Kendall Charge of Islington, died on April 23, 1978. Husband of Dorothy and father of Mary and Michael.

Don't know if you have Wilfred's obit. It is in the Winnipeg Free Press, May 2, 1962, page 30.
He died on April 30 at his residence, Ste H Hugo Apartments. Husband of Margaret Mowat Charge. He was 80. Buried at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.

In case you don't have this... Margaret (Mrs Wilfred K) died on or just before March 5, 1971. There is a very short line about her death in the Winnipeg Free Press on that date. It doesn't give another date of death, so likely it was the 5th.

Thank you so much William and RunKitty,
I'm going to be quite busy sorting out all the info you have given me.
I've had a look at the NE Wills and when I have managed to sort out the legal gobbledegook, I'll have quite a bit more to add to my tree.
Thanks again,
:)

A PS to my last post.
I've found a Jonathan KENDALL baptized in Romaldkirk on 16 Aug 1769 (abode Cornpark).
This is from the transcriptions that I'm doing for FreeReg.

Jonathan Kendall of CornPark in the parish of Romaldkirk is named on a probate bond for Christopher Parkin (1808 ). Christopher was the father of Jonathan's wife Jane.

Hi,
The NE Inheritance Project is great!! I have found quite a few Wills there pertaining to my Mom's English relatives. I have added lots of people to our tree, thanks to that resource :) :)
You are probably well aware of the following records... but just in case:
The Durham Records online site is good (I just do the free searches)
http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/index.php?q=1&cookiecheck=1
So is the familysearch collection of Bishops Transcripts of Parish registers
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1309819
They also have Durham Marriage Bonds and Allegations - images included.
If you have any questions about "legal gobbledegook", you can post them - either here or in the "Common Room" section.

Hi,
thanks once more to William and RunKitty! :D
I'll be getting snowed under with all this info! (Pun intended!) ;D
Yes RK I have been looking at the Bishop's Transcripts for a while now, and have found lots of things there that don't show up in Ancestry etc. Also the Marriage Bonds & Allegations, they helped me sort out a few things.
Best regards,

Keith, I just found your questions regarding Wilfred Charge quite by accident when I typed the name into google. (I just joined this site now to reply to your post). Wilfred Charge was my grandfather. My name is Mary, I am the daughter of John (his son) and Dorothy.
I would be happy to answer any questions that I have knowledge of for you. Both of my parents have died and I believe that I have some papers and things around the house here. I may not have all the dates that you require though.
I'm not sure exactly how this site works just yet but I will check back to look for your reply.

Thanks Mary, I'm sure that you will be able to help me :D.
Welcome to Rootschat, you'll soon get the hang of it. I've found it extremely helpful when I had hit a brick wall for all the people I'm researching in my family.
Best regards,
Keith
PS when you have made a few more posts, you will be able to send personal messages, and maybe we could exchange e-mail addresses

Keith, I wouldn't have a problem giving you my email at all. I'm not researching anything so I may have to reply to you several times to get my post count up. How many posts does it take until I can send a pm?

Hi Mary,
you only have to send 3 posts, then you can use personal messaging, so you're nearly there! :D
I have records that show that Ann KENDALL married John CHARGE in 1833 in Coniscliffe, County Durham.
She was born in Romaldkirk. That makes her my great great grandmother. Got lots of other stuff too, if you're interested. ;D
