Title: Latin Baptism Record
Post by: Phenmark on Friday 05 December 14 03:01 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I was hoping I could get confirmation on the following baptism record from the Church of the Sacred Heart, Fall River Ma.
I believe it is the baptism of John McDonald, my g-grandfather. On several records (WWI draft reg., 1900 census, and his gravestone), his birth is given as as May 4th, 1877, Fall River. Putting aside the year, his parents, Patrick McDonald and Anna O'Brien, are correct, as well as the month and day (I think). I would like clarification on one word. I believe a portion to translate as "John McDonald born the 4th day of the month of May (Mayus mensis).
Am I reading "Mayus" correctly? The reason I ask is that the letter "M" in both the name McDonald and the word "Maii" elsewhere in the document are written completely differently than what I am reading as the "M" in Mayus (if that, indeed is the word).
Any thoughts warmly and gratefully welcomed.
Thanks!
Steve

Yes, I would go with that, especially as the baptism just to the left says 7th May. Presumably the word immediately after 4th is 'die' or similar.

The sense is correct. I believe the Latin could read ...

natum 4ti Die
hujus mensis

Born on the 4th day of this month.

Thank you both for your help. Hujus mensis! That explains it!
Another mystery solved.
I really appreciate it.
