There is nothing on either the 1851 or 1861 so I suspect she may possibly have been illegitimate

If she was illegitimate would it give her fathers name on her wedding certificate , which it does thats why I know he was called Thomas

It was a very common practice for illegitimate children to make up a fathers name when they married in order to appear "respectable"

Many used totally fictitious names whilst others used names/occupations of relatives (eg) if brought up by grandparents they would often use the grandfathers name/occupation

If her mother married before the 1851 census then Mary may be shown on both the 1851 and 1861 under her stepfathers surname

Who did Mary marry and when?

Her Mother's name will be on her birth certificate - saves speculation as to parentage.

Interesting, also registered on the same page:

Births Jun 1850
Purcell    Joseph         Dudley    18   267
Purcell    Mary         Dudley    18   267

No marriages showing in Dudley from 1850 to 1851 for any Purcells.

Added:
There is a death for a Joseph Purcell in Dudley later that year, which could be him as no ages recorded in 1850.

Pearsall can be a variation but nothing coming up under that either - can you post the full details of the marriage certificate

 ;) Hiya

Purcell may even be a corruption of Portill { named found in Co Clare, Ireland }
my maternal gt gt grandmother was Jane Portill, she married Michael Murphy 1860,
Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, iv'e seen the Portill spelt in all variations so Purcell might just be
connected ;)
All the best.

Getting a copy of the birth cert will answer all the speculation. You will then know her mums name, probably have an idea as to whether she was or wasnt illegitimate, have an address as at 1850, etc and be able to move on with some degree of confidence you are on the right track.

Did you buy a copy of her birth cert?

You originally said her father was Thomas on her marriage cert so where has Robert come from?  Why would she give a different name for her father?

I came by the name Thomas for her father from her marriage certificate , which I will post details of when I get home.
Her birth certificate says her father is Robert and mother Elizabeth nee davies one is obviously wrong , I have tended to go with the birth certificate because she named her children Robert and Elizabeth .

Hi Lyndy it appears that I  am chasing up the same family. If you  look on  My Heritage you will see that we have a DNA match.
