Title: Muncaster marriage bond
Post by: redjed1 on Friday 12 December 14 12:18 GMT (UK)
Hi, I have a marriage bond for the marriage of John Ramsay and Jane Brown in 1787. I can't make out a bit of the handwriting. It looks to me to read "Jane Brown of Wholes (?) in the parish of Muncaster"
Perhaps someone with local knowledge or better eyes can enlighten me?
Thanks
John

Hi,

Could you try and put a copy of the transcription for us to try and decipher.  "Wholes" could have been the name of a house ?

Could it be Walls?  I'm not sure what parish it was in mind.  :-\

There was a Holehouse at Ulpha - not to far away.

Hole House, Ulpha
Holehouse Bridge, Ulpha
Holehouse Gill Mine, Ulpha

There is a baptism :- Elizabeth daughter of Thomas BROWN of Hole House was baptized the seventeenth day of November 1706 - so a family of brown were at Hole House in 1706.

There is a baptism for Jane Brown 1 st Aug 1714 to father Thomas Brown. Perhaps a little early for your Jane ?

Hole House is in the parish of Ulpha, not Muncaster http://maps.nls.uk/view/101100734#zoom=5&lat=2828&lon=1658&layers=BT

Hi all, many thanks for all the replies. My PC is down and I've been trying to attach a copy of the handwriting from my I-pad mini. I'll just say it's difficult!

Staring at the wording (blown- up) it looks like Wholes. From the above replies, the one that says most is the Brown family at Hole House. The parish of Walls in Muncaster is the other option.

Thanks for your efforts. I'll consider both options.

Hi Sandra,
John Ramsay was a mariner. No other info. Don't know anything else about him.
