Title: "Stratford" family. Cavan.Co.Cavan.Ireland.
Post by: Carole147 on Friday 12 December 14 13:07 GMT (UK)
I wonder if anyone would have any current or past information about the "STRATFORD" family or their relatives, who were farmers from Cavan. My Grandmother, on my Mothers side was Thomasena Stratford. She was born in Dublin in 1884, daughter of Thomas Stratford and Jane Kilroy and she  lived in Dublin with her brothers and sisters before moving to Cavan.(Thomas's parents were Mark Stratford of Cullaboy in the Parish of Drumlumin, Cavan  and Martha Anne Ferguson from Mayheahy in the Parish of Soraby, Cavan.Mark and Martha married 1847 at Granard Register Office, Co.Longford). The 1901 census shows the Stratford family lived in Dublin, and 1911 census in Drumgore, Loughdawan. Cavan. My Grandmother Thomasena Stratford married at Gowna Parish Church in 1918. Her 2 brothers were Mark and Thomas(Tom) Stratford and sisters were Cheri,Julia and Katherine Jane(Edie)Stratford. Younger brother,Thomas(Tom)was a Farmer and had a farm near Kilmore, Cavan Town in the 1940's/50's up till his death early 1960s, when he had an accident visiting his brother in Downpatrick. My Mother, Ethel Owens lived with him on his farm for abt 10 years before 1951.She mentioned the "SLOAN" and "KNIGHT"families as being special friends who were related distantly to the Stratford family and I would be very keen to hear from anybody who has any information at all about the Stratford,Sloane, Knight families.  With many thanks for your help, Carole.

Lots of information there but thought I would fill in a few details for anyone reading this topic. However, are you sure about which Mark Stratford is your ancestor?

1) Mark Stafford, son of Mark Stratford, m.(11 Feb.1848 Parish Church, Ballymickillery) Thomesina Ferguson.

This could be the Knight connection-

Joseph Knight, son of Joseph, married 21 June 1848 Judith Stratford, daughter of Mark.

Possibly Judith?

and same family in 1911-

This family in 1821 census are likely connected as well-

Many thanks for all the links. My ancestor was the Mark Stratford from the Parish of Drumlumun, Cullaboy, b 1829 who married Martha Anne Ferguson, a Farmers daughter. Marks Father was William Stratford, born abt 1779 who also had a brother called Mark Stratford.Their Parents and Grandparents  were called Thomas and William Stratford. Thomas I think, died in Freeduff and William in Carrick.Their family originally came from Warwickshire, (Nuneaton) it was abt 1700 that the 2 brothers William and Thomas Stratford came over to Ireland from Warwickshire. The Stratford family have some notable descendents.

One of Sidney Welsh's brothers was Dr. Henry Welsh I, died May 7, 1794. I do not have a birth date. They are the chidren of John Welsh II baptised 1707 St. Catherine Church, Dublin, Ireland adn died 1766 Killyfargy, Co. Monaghan, Ireland and Anne Pilkington b. abt 1703-08 Tore, Westmeath, Ireland. You should be able to find more of each side of their trees on Ancestry. The Pilkington's were prominent in Lancashire, England as well as you will find them in Ireland . (Anne's father ws Abraham Pilkington, Esq. married to Elizabeth West. ) I am descended from Dr. Henry Welsh who's family eventually is in Lancashire, England. I hope this will give you more insight into this family.

With reference to a previous post in which you stated
'Thomasina Ferguson was born in  Malyheahy. Co.Cavan in 1826.  Thomasina's father was Thomas Ferguson, b.1795 Lisnalee. Monaghan.  Her mother was Mary Anne Knight b.1800-1830.
Thomasina had 4 sisters called Catherine Ferguson, Martha Anne Ferguson, Cherry Ann Ferguson and Mary Ann Ferguson.'
Is it possible or do you have any knowledge to indicate that Thomas Ferguson may have married again after his wife Mary Anne Knight died.  I have found an Anne Sloane Ferguson who I believe was married to a Thomas Ferguson & I thought it might be the same man.  I cant confirm a marriage but have seen a possible link in that Thomas Ferguson's death was registered by George F Crowe & Anne Sloane Ferguson was closely linked with a George F Crowe, her cousin (George Fraser Crowe I think!). Regards

i started at page 152 and found a Andrew Stratford and Joseph Stratford who retired in 1898 unfortunately it keeps knocking itself off so best keep a note of the page you are searching.
Joseph Stratford if i have found the right man sometimes had the middle name of Kent or Knight he was married to Eliza Jane Sterling or Eliza Jane Flux he was also a Constable in Canada

You would need Church records, as you see there are quite a few Sloan headstones in Gowna but didn't see any for Stratford.

(1889 will of John Kilroy, Drumgore (Janes father)mentions Jane, wife Catherine & obv has to be Janes husband as Thomas Stratford of Cullaboy, Parish of Drumlummon & not as Thomas Stratford of Kilgolagh or Finnea, as id thought (death registered Scrabby)why need your help trying wk which Mark Stratford was the father of my ancester Thomas b.1858 Drumgore d. 1939 Gowna, who father Mark married & if Mark, his wife or Thomas had any brothers/sisters, afraid thats all the inform I have abt them, many thanks for any help with this

I've been busy recently, but i'll try cross check our notes to see if there's a good explanation

Thanks Ian, in notes made while bk for house 44 have Judith(farmer)Thomas(son) Mark(son)Margt(daur)Judith(daur)also Robt(son)Andy(son)Nancy(daur),tho could be wrong. Tho' think my Thomas Stratford b.1858 & your Mark Stratford b.1856 were brothers, in some notes have your Catherine Foster as descended from one of Thomasina Fergusons other sisters, (why wondering if Thomasina Ferguson b.1826 & Mark Stratford b. 1801 Kilgolagh d. 1869 Co Cavan are def the correct ancestors)

And the bit you're unsure of is:
 - Are Thomas*'s parents correct (and the same as Mark*s?)

I havent been able to find much on Catherine Foster. Although, I think she is the daughter of John Foster and Anne <Unknown Surname>

Is this the church where Thomas is buried?
https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-search/building/40403010/lough-gowna-church-of-ireland-church-cloone-county-cavan

After the Coronavirus lockdown is over, I could check the nearby graves for clues - I live not too far away (I'd want to be sure I have the right church though!)

Hi Ian, thanks for summary which mks me realise they def must have been brothers, also video of Gowna Ch which is the right one. Havent any inform abt Catherine except b.1855 d.12 May 1937 & they had 5 children, including your Gt G'father, Mark. Gowna Church is where my Thomas of Drumgore b. 1858 d.13 jan 1939 is buried, his grave is the upright fancy grave with the S on it, also there is the flat tomb of Mary Anne Knight & Thomas Ferguson & headstone nr tree is of Catherine Sloane(daur of Mary Anne Knight & Thomas Ferguson).
At Drumlumman Ch Irel abandoned graveyard, Finea(Ballymackilenny Ch),are old Stratford tombstones & old Stratford Coat of Arms(used by orig Irish Stratfords of Baltinglass). Thomasina, our ancestor is buried here, also Mary Ann her sister & several graves with Stratford crests on headstones. (Got all inform from relative,as have had to postpone visit to Dublin/Cavan).
Finnea village is where Thomasina had her house, & is beside the old Police Station. There was another Ferguson sister, Martha Anne b. abt 1822, d 23 Jun 1851, she married a cousin of our Mark Stratford b 1801-1869, He was also called Mark Stratford, think b abt 1820 & his father was William Stratford, farmer & they married 6 Jan 1847 Granard & had 1 son called John William Stratford b 1851, same year Martha Anne died.
There was a land indenture drawn up by Edgar William L'Estrange, Solicitor of 197 Gt Brunswick St, Dublin dated 18 Aug 1869 abt the Ferguson lands betw: Thomasina Stratford b.Ferguson of Kilgola(widow)1st part, John William Stratford of Knockaghy minor & Henry Strong his guardian 2nd part, John Strong & William Strong 3rd part, Catherine Sloane b.Ferguson of Knockaghy(widow) 4th part, Thomas Irvine & Cherry Irvine b. Ferguson 5th part & James Dalton of  Brunswick Rd, Dublin 6th part.   Thomas Ferguson & Mary Anne Knight also had twin sons, b/d 1828, because of no male descendents lands divided betw the 5 daughters & their descendents. (Thomas Fergusons father was John Ferguson)
The only inform I have abt Catherine Foster is she & Mark had 5 children, John William, Thomasina, Andrew, Mark,(ur Gt Grandfather)& Samuel, if I find more will let you know.
Realise your Mark b. 1855 d 1937 & my Thomas Stratford b 1858 d 13 jan 1939 Drumgore must be brothers tho unfort never been able find links for his birth & parents names, wonder if they poss had other brothers/sisters.When you get chance again to look at Churches pl let me know how goes

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificate. A baptism record (if it exists/survives) might or might not list either mother's Christian & maiden names or just Christian name. The information in registers can vary according greatly.
