Title: Coroners Inquest COMPLETED
Post by: Eyesee on Saturday 13 December 14 09:51 GMT (UK)
If an eight year old child had fallen off a horse or wagon in Turakina in 1870 and died from a fractured skull, would there have been a Coroner's Inquest. Can't find anything on Archway.

The person was known as Thomas Alfred or Alfred Thomas BELLVE. His mother was the wife of Estevan BELLVE, the proprietor of the Hotel there, although they did not marry until 1882. He is buried in an unmarked grave at the Turakina Catholic Cemetery. He was not born a BELLVE, but was given that surname. He was born at sea on board the Swiftsure in 1862 on the passage to Australia. His mother was Emily CONSTABLE. His death was registered as Alfred BELLVE.

Can't find anything in the Wanganui newspapers on Paperspast either.

Anybody in Wellington able to check the indexes at NA for me

Thanks

Hi Ian,

Do you know the precise date of death in 1870?

I can look for him in the Coroner's Registers, but it won't be until the end of January at the earliest.

Excellent. :) If under cause of death it begins, 'Verdict of Coroner...' an inquest was held.

Don't think there was an inquest as death printout says "Inflamation of the brain" as cause of death. No mention of Coroner. I suppose that could have been caused by falling on your head from the back of a wagon or a horse.

Can be closed thanks Spades.

Well, it was an accurate determination, anyway. ;)

Thanks Ian, I'll close it off.
