Can anyone help me find my 2xgreat grandfather? We know he moved to Portage-la-Prairie in Canada in 1890 but then completely disappears. He is supposedly alive in Jan 1895 when his daughter got married, but then was shown as deceased in late 1896 on another marriage cert. Family lore states that he committed suicide in Canada or North America, but I cannot find any record of him after the Canadian Census in 1890. Please help solve this enigma.

Lodger: Walter LOUTH, married, 44, b England, baptist, Farm Labourer
So he was born around 1847? Where in England was he born and where in England did his family reside? If possible records are found we have some life details to compare to.
As you say, can't see him in the Manitoba BDM

One thing to watch out for especially, is that in handwriting, LOUTH can easily be mistaken as SOUTH.

There are a few Walter Louth born 1846-1848 on census returns - but I can only find one in 1851 that isn't on 1891 census and can't find a death for ??.... it's a bit of a stab in the dark but aged 3 in 1851 census in Wisbech , Cambridgeshire ,England
maybe someone can try and trace this man through 1861/1871/1881 census ??

Walter Louth was born in Wisbech in 1847. He married Elizabeth Scott (nee Hickman) in Highbury, London in 1871. They then lived in London until 1890 when he moved out to Canada. His wife, Elizabeth was still there in 1891, where she had originally put herself as wife, then changed
it to head. None of his family appear to have followed him out to Canada. Elizabeth then moved to Southport, where she died in 1930.
It would be great to try to link up AMBLY. Where do you think we may have a link?

Ahhhh , I see.....so sorry, you and I have no common genealogy - when I wrote the above I meant 'we' as in myself and other rootschatters who might search and unearth items of information that could be your Walter. Knowing his place and time of birth etc, may in such case, help us know if we're more likely to have found him (and not someone with the same name).
If he led a fairly transient lifestyle in Canada, moving around Provinces to work, never settling or 'remarrying' - he may be very difficult to locate. He may have ended up in one of the Canadian Provinces where records are hard or impossible to come online. He may have died and no-one knew much or anything about him, including his name. And if he crossed into the US - he could have gone anywhere in the union. :'( :'(

No worries.
The only other information we have is that Walter was identified as being a fruit farmer on one of his children's marriage certificates in 1895/6. On another child's marriage in 1897, he is written as deceased. Family lore has it that he committed suicide in Canada/North America, but we have no information about that and cannot find a death record anywhere.
Any help gratefully received.
