Dear Chatters "Down Under":
I am seeking information from people with the surname "Kemble Jones" (with or without a hypen) to find out if any of you have details of where this combination came from. The earliest I can find is Joseph Kemble Jones b. about 1814 in Liverpool, England and died 2Q 1888 in Derbyshire, England. In fact, his death registration is the only time I can find the 'Kemble' added to his surname. I notice from the Internet that several Australian citizens with this name are registered on a couple of social media sites. If any of you have traced your family tree, is there any trace of a Doris (?Kemble) Jones, born 1900 to Frederick Kemble Jones and Ann Jane (nee Houghton) in Derbyshire, England?

I tried using Kemble as a Christian name and on FindMyPast it came up with loads of Kemble Jones with the addition of their 1st names. Haven't tried other sites but I expect the result would be the same

Thanks for that. I actually have quite a bit of family with the name Kemble Jones, so I think that everything you found is probably in my tree. It's just that we seem to have 'lost' Doris and it seems a shame that her nuclear family may have died out - her 2 elder brothers were killed within weeks of one another in WWI and her sister is also "MIA" (though there may be a link now). Also, one or two people are desperate to prove that the Kemble comes from the famous Sarah Kemble (of the Siddons family) when I am absolutely certain it doesn't - dates and locations all wrong when 'testing' these people's theories.

In the 1911 census they are not using the name Kemble, so if this continued it would be quite difficult to find a Doris Jones after this.

Not all members of the family used 'Kemble' all the time, even when they were baptized as such, or noted with that name in a census. It would appear that 'legal' names didn't matter quite so much. Eleanors and Ellens were recorded as Nellie, Dorothys as Dolly, etc. etc. And, as I said, with the earliest - Joseph - his full name was recorded only at death and not in any of the censuses. So, Doris may not have had the name Kemble, or may have 'adopted' it later in life. Unfortunately, censuses end at 2011 and, so far, I have found no marriage or death for her.
(And are you really a 'crooner'???!)

Update - 5 years later! Doris has appeared - married in 1932 in Derby to a James Brown and living in Derby as a 'Domestic' in 1939, annotated as 'married' but no sign of hubby. Could only wish that she married someone with an unusual name; as it is, Jas. has proved impossible to trace for sure. If anyone knows any just cause or impediment why I should not abandon this one small trace, please speak now, etc. etc. etc.

Doris has appeared - married in 1932 in Derby to a James Brown and living in Derby as a 'Domestic' in 1939, annotated as 'married' but no sign of hubby.
Could only wish that she married someone with an unusual name; as it is, Jas. has proved impossible to trace for sure.
Have you obtained the 1932 marriage certificate ?
Hopefully that would confirm both their father’s names, occupations , perhaps his age and
who knows witnesses maybe family members

Does the dob for Doris Brown match with her birth certificate?
Edit - as her husband James is not with her perhaps he was in the Military but that doesn’t
really help has you haven’t got a dob or pob
Have you checked to see if they had children - maybe Kemble as a middle name?

Have not so far applied for the marriage certificate (the info has only this year come to hand and life has tended to get in the way!). I had not seen the 1931 electoral register - her dad, Frederick Kemble Jones, died in 1Q of 1931 - and thus I did not have the Litchurch connection; I shall be sure to follow this up. I had found the 2 death records and they are sitting comfortably in my Shoebox until I have time to think about them further. I had not thought about the Military option, to be fair - again it is something to ponder and I shall certainly try and do something about the Smith/Brown connection (again, why couldn't he hook up with a weird surname instead of what is probably No. 1 in the country!!).
