I have tried to find these two sisters in Family Search who were born 1896 and 1895. According to Free BMD their parents were William Curran and Jane Howells of Swansea. However Family Search only has Violet living in Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan and Gladys at Swansea St.Mary in the 1901 census - both described as daughter of the head of household.
Could someone please check the 1901 census to see if this was the same household?
Gladys Curran married William Davies in 1915 and their daughter Lillian - later Lilian - eventually married Prince Bertil of Sweden. See http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2294551/Princess-Lilian-Sweden-Welsh-born-beauty-married-Swedish-royal-family-buried-state-funeral.html
Violet Curran married Edward Evans and their daughter Bernice married Oliver Carlill who was a distant cousin of mine. I'm trying to verify this for someone who only began his family research three days ago. Many thanks, Malcolm

How did you get that from Freebmd, it doesn't give parent's names does it?

Thank you Groom, so these two were different families. And of course you are right - Free BMD only gives mother's maiden name a bit later on. I'll have to go back over notes and emails from Ceri as he came up with Howells and Curran as his grandparents and they were the surnames of Lilian Davies' grandparents. Also Ceri remembers a reporter visiting his grandmother when Lilian finally married her Prince. One thing I have discovered is that Swansea registry office got the name of his mother wrong and entered it as Bernard instead of Bernice. Will have to advise him now to obtain his parents marriage certificate. Thanks again for your help, Malcolm

If you look back at the 1881 and 1891 censuses there is a possibility that Sydney and William were brothers, the sons of Robert and Mary A Curran. In 1881 William was a Railway Block Making Contractor, which is similar to his later occupation. In 1891 Sydney was a Moulder's apprentice. That would make Violet and Gladys cousins rather than sisters.

Thanks again, Groom. I had a look for Jane's birth on FreeBMD as Jane Howells in Carmarthen and that seems to be correct with a registration in June 1878 in the district of Narberth which is just down the road from St Clears.

If you look back at the 1881 and 1891 censuses there is a possibility that Sydney and William were brothers, the sons of Robert and Mary A Curran.
Well it is now looking more and more likely that they were brothers. The 1901 census you found for Sidney gives his age as 25 which puts his birth around 1876.
I can only find this entry which adds another element - an unusual middle name:
Births Jun 1876
CURRAN Sidney Wickens Swansea 11a 745
Now look at this WWI Memorial in the War Graves pages:
William Wickens Curran
Rank: Private
Service No: 69200
Date of Death: 09/08/1918
Age: 19
Regiment/Service: Royal Welsh Fusiliers 1st Bn.
Grave Reference: Plot 2. Row A. Grave 12.
Cemetery: GRANEZZA BRITISH CEMETERY
Additional Information:
Son of William John and Jane Curran, of 3, Garden Street, Swansea, South Wales.
So here we have the name 'Wickens' attached to Sidney and to the son of William and Jane.
Wouldn't have got there without your help, Groom. Cheers Malcolm

Can I please ask another favour? Family Search tells me that there was a Maurice Curran age 26 born Ireland living in Ystradyfodwg in 1901 as a boarder. If not in the same household as Sydney and his family, then where? I would like to see how close they were.
I've found that there was a Maurice Curran born in Castletown, near Killmallock, in Limerick in August 1875 parents Michael Curran and Catherine Gaven. That would make him 25 not 26 in March 1901, but it is close.
Michael and Kate had another son William Curran born April 1865 in Castletown, a date which is very close that of William John Curran shown as age 35 born Swansea in the 1901 census. Has to be a coincidence since William John's father was Robert.

Thank you so much Groom. Maurice wouldn't have been all that far from the other Curran's then. Marion Street is in bottom left of google map and whilst I haven't found Rhys Street it was in Llwynypia Parish which must have extended down to right hand side of map - e.g. Llwynypia Road. - https://www.google.com.au/maps/@51.6288226,-3.4668955,15z

I need to ask for more help in an attempt to identify the link between Wickens and the Curran family.
When trying Ukcensus on line for Wickens residing in Glamorgan in 1841 nothing comes up. But in 1851 they have a James Wickens, Solicitor, born London in 1818. There is also a 4 year old Rosanna Wickins aged 4 born Bristol. She doesn't appear at all in Family Search for the 1851 census, but they have James Wickens down as a Boarder in their summary and as a Guest of the householder in their detailed results.
What would help would be the address that James was staying at in Glamorgan in 1851. Could you please help again, Groom?
I have tracked James down in later years and it seems he moved about the country a great deal. He shows up in 1871 in London with three Sisters (apparently all single) and no less than Seven Servants! Summary of articles and notices in British Newspaper Archives give his address as 1 Chandos Street, Cavendish Square and looks like he was doing a lot more than being just a solicitor - real estate and shipping freight according to the advertisements.
-
He was a guest in a hotel - Parade Castle Hotel, Neath, Glamorganshire. Occupation solicitor and place of birth London, Middlesex.

There is also a 4 year old Rosanna Wickins aged 4 born Bristol.
I can't see her anywhere.

Thank you Groom. So he was in Neath and that rings a bell. Back to the drawing board, someone I've spotted in this search was in Neath.

Thanks for checking her out too. I often see discrepancies between Fam Search and UkCensusonline and one wonders at times.
-
There isn't a birth registration for her as far as I can see either.

Hi Nena, you really need to start a new topic of your own as it doesn't look as if this is the same family. Give as much information as you can so that people can help.
