Jessie Margaret Gerrard, living at Stoneyhill Walkerburn, served as an orderly with the Girton and Newnham unit in Salonika  and Belgrade in Serbia from August 1918- August 1919.  In November 1919 she left Salonika for India where i understand she went to visit an aunt.

Madge Ramsay Smith, living in Peebles, served as secretary and administrator at Royau mont Abbey from May 1916- March 1919. Much of Madge’s  story can be accessed by reading   Antonio de Navarro’s book ‘The SWH at the French Abbey of Royaumont’

Madge (Margaret) Ramsay Smith was born on 31st July 1884 at Minnie Bank, Peebles (address of a house).  Her father was John Ramsay Smith, solicitor who gave his name to the well-known local law firm of Blackwood & Smith.  Her mother was Mary Graham Ramsay Smith ms Norwell.
The registration number of her birth is 768/00/0075.
She lived at Kingsmuir Hall (large house in Peebles) and died in 1977 in Peebles aged 92.  Death registration number 801/00 0043.
She was honoured with the Freedom of the Royal Burgh of Peebles for her work during World War 1 in France, both at casualty clearing stations near battlefields and at a field hospital which she help to evacuate despite shelling around it.

One post on this website gives her the wrong parents!  Her birth certificate gives her parents as above, their marriage 14th June 1883 in Edinburgh.

Hi SWH,

Possibly the 1911 would be best as she may be at the Farm by then which would confirm.

Just looking at her father's occupation (if them in 1901) & wondering if a Photographer would end up on a farm?
