Title: Thomas Gormley born in Mayo, died in England.
Post by: shoshannah on Saturday 27 December 14 17:14 GMT (UK)
Hi, I am trying to trace the ancestors and movements of a Thomas Gormley.

I believe he was born in County Mayo sometime between 1899-1905. He died in England (probably Westminster 1952-awaiting arrival of certificate)  between 1950-1954 and travelled regularly to the Cambridge area. He was a lorry driver and served in the RAF prior to this.

Other than the death certificate which I have not yet recieved I am struggling to find any proof or facts to link him to parents or siblings. I don't know when he came to England. There are Westminster electoral records that have a Thomas Gormley living with an Alice and Ethel Gormey between 1947 and 1952 however I cannot find and birth or marriage records to find out if either of these are wives, children or siblings or if this is the Thomas I want to find.

If anyone would be able to help, I'd be very grateful! I have no knowledge of how to search Irish records yet so advice on this would be wonderful.

Thanks in advance,
Shosh

Hi

What is your connection to him?  Are you related to one of his siblings?

Where did the following info come from?

Hi Carole,

I have been asked to do the tree by a relative. This info is what has been handed down through the years. Of course this means it might not be that accurate hence why I am trying to find records to back it up.

No problem.  How is the person you are doing the tree for related to Thomas

Hi,  I know this is an old thread but if you are still researching, I can confirm that Ethel Gormley was the daughter of Thomas and Alice Gormley, and that they lived in Westminster during the period mentioned. Thomas died in 1952.  He was my grandfather.

Hi Shosh

I'm not sure you have the right Thomas Gormley.  I've always understood that my grandfather came from Dublin.  The census shows a Thomas Gormley living at different addresses in Dublin in 1901 and 1911, and assuming the census age is right, he was born in 1896, which fits.  The census also shows his parents being Jane and John Gormley, which just happen to be the christian names of myself and my brother.  I don't think that's a coincidence but wasn't aware of the link before today!  My mother was Ethel Gormley, and she was born to Thomas And Alice in 1923 in Dublin.  I believe the family moved to England around 1930/31 and there were two further children, Arthur and Beryl, both born in England.  I think the family lived in Suffolk before London.  I never heard of any connection to lorry driving, Cambridge, or the RAF.  Thomas died in 1952 in Westminster.  Alice died between 1960/2 in Crawley, West Sussex. Arthur died in 1963/4, Ethel in 1997 and Beryl in 2011.  My Father may have known more about his in-laws, but unfortunately he passed in 1998, so there is no-one left to ask.  I don't know if any of this background helps, but would be interested in hearing about any other info you have on my Grandfather.  Best rgds Jane

Oh I see what you mean now, the way that person writes their G, it could be Grocer not Trainer.

You do realise Alice Brennan may not be Mosemol's grandmother, I just picked that couple because of the timing.

Hi,

I am so sorry I have not seen any of the replies to this thread until now when I have started looking into it again. Thank you for all your input.

Sadly I am fairly sure that Mosemol’s Thomas is not the same Thomas Gormley as I am looking for.

If anyone has any further input it would be appreciated. I will now go and work out how to turn the notifications on...!

There are 4 birth certs for Thomas Gormley from 1899 to 1905 none of them are in a Mayo registration district.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

Even if they were from Mayo how would you know it was the correct Thomas.
If there is no other family information known, what about his lorry, any idea who he drove for?

Hi again,

I have recently come across some electoral records that show Thomas Gormley living in Cambridge at various addresses between 1947 and 1953 with a Betty Winter/ Gormley who is my
relative. I assume this means he was established in the area and that this was his primary residence?

Any idea where I can go from here? I am hoping to get in touch with living family of his.

Many thanks
Shosh
