I have a baptism record from 1778, Kilbride, Bute (Arran).
Can anyone help me locate the abode which was noted as Aird.
Regards
Colin

Aird Castle (the remains of) are in Kilbride parish, Isle of Arran

Kilbride parish (Kil = church of St Bride or Bridget) takes in Lamlash Bay

Hi
Kilbride parish includes all of the East coast of Arran:

I've been looking at the old 19th century 6 ins to mile OS maps all down that side of Arran but I can't find it so far. Aird usually means Point in Gaelic, so it would most likely be on a promontory.

From Genuki (Aird means
high or height gadget's correct it means point) http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/BUT/Miscellaneous/
"CASTLE OF AIRD, in the island of Arran, in the county of Bute, Scotland. This extensive ruin is supposed to have been the work of the Danes, and is situated on a promontory a little to the north of Caradell Point."
Not sure about this may be a confusion with Carradale in Kiintyre

Fifer - the only Castle of Aird that I can find is in Kintyre (Canmore has it there)- I'm guessing that the Arran one must be a small place on the east coast of Arran - I'll try looking at other maps but eyes go funny after a while.

This is the Carradale one - on Kintyre:

Agreed that's the only one I could find. I think Genuki may have boobed on this one. :-\
LOL I've got glaucoma so you don't need to tell me about eyes, I know just what you mean ;D

It's at times like these that we need Arranroots :)
I have what's been called high occular pressure - not yet glaucoma, which my mother had.
I'll see what I can find, I've got lots of photos of the area in recent times but don't know it in minute detail - used to be a weekend trip when we lived in the far NW Highlands.

A very old map with totally wrong coatline but here is an Aird - opposite Lamlash/Holy Island

Think this might be it on modern map

There's a Point House.

During WW2 there was a boom across that end of the bay I suspect naval officers may have renamed the point. ::)

Sure are - found a place related to OH's family on Arran just recently - doesn't exist on modern maps, I worked it out that its under the middle of a forestry plantation.

My thanks to all, especially Little Nell. The map I had records Kings Point off King's Cross.
It's in the area of my research. Thanks again.
Happy New Year to all.

Hi all,
First time I've noticed a post re Arran. I'm from Arran, have never heard of Aird but when I looked at the map Gadget linked to, it points to the Lamlash area as it appears to be next to Cordon although spelled differently on that map. I will however ask my elderly mother as she is more likely to know than me. If it is in Kings Cross, I know there is an old Roman fort but never heard of a castle. If there was my mum will know as that's where she grew up.
Any one else needing any Arran tips or hints do feel free to ask and I'll check out the Aird reference.
And yes Kilbride parish covers from the east to the south of the island then it becomes Kilmory parish.
