Hi,
I have just found on a death certificate that my husband's ancestor James Carruthers died as a result of an accident in 1923, he died in the back of an ambulance after surviving for 2 hours. This happened in Maybole and he was living in Girvan at the time. I'm wondering if there would be any newspaper records of the accident, I don't know what happened, and where would I find the newspapers?
Kind Regards

Hi Nerys ,
The British Newspaper Archive might and I stress might be of interest www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk.
or Google Newspaper Archive - has Glasgow Herald .
Other local newspapers such as Ayrshire Post are not online (to my knowledge) and are held either at the Ayrshire Archives in Ayr or at Burns Monument Centre Kilmarnock , Ayrshire.
Hope you find what you are looking for.

A puzzle also to do with James Carruthers.
Also on the death Certificate is something that's puzzling me :o
within the margin is written : Result of precognition. See Reg
Exr. Entry Vid II, page 229
1st February 1924
Does anyone have any idea what this might mean or where I might find help in understanding what it means?
Kind Regards

Looks like all of 1923 available for Glasgow Herald online. If you know date of death you might find something reported - then again depending on the circumstances of your ancestors death it may not have made this newspaper :-\
Have you looked at the Death Entry on Scotlands People website? Was there an entry on The Register of Corrected Entries?
Looby :)

You need to log back into Scotlands People and view the death registration again. There should be a red box on the right hand side of screen with the words " VIEW RCE ( 1 credit)" . If you have a credit to use and click on the icon it will open the Register of Corrected Entries - this may give you a little more info :-\
This was completed after a death certificate was issued and more info came to light or something that was initially recorded was changed i.e. time of death/place of death etc.

Due to the circumstances of the death there would have been a full report to the Procurator Fiscal who would then have formally interviewed witnesses (the Precognition) - As previously said check to see if there was an RCE made (occasionally they give lots of information but sometimes they disappoint)

Thank you both for your help :), I looked at the RCE and it did indeed shed light on what caused James' death, a mining accident at Killochan Coal Pit, something else for me to try and look up.
Kind regards

Hi cnerys,
I had a look at Scottish Mining website, they have a report from the Scotsman Newspaper of the accident that killed James Carruthers, 6 Hillview, Bourtree, Girvan. Click in link below,

Thank you so much Tom for the link :), I couldn't find anything about the accident when I looked. It's been a very interesting path for me to find out about this branch of my husband's tree, and when I looked more on the mining accident page, in 1929 there may be another person belonging to him, so I am so grateful for your help.
Kind regards

Hi,
James Carruthers was my Great Grandfather. I knew exactly how died just that it was a mining accident so happy but sad at the same time to read this.
