The newspapers tell the story, but I`m hoping to find where he died and is possibly buried.
Thanks
-
He would be hard to track down as he was well travelled. His children were born in County Durham, Carlisle, Yorkshire and as far south as Exmouth in Devon. The 1901 census from Wednesbury says that he was a Publican and Brewer.
Perhaps he travelled to NZ to seek retribution!!! ;D

There is not a death for him in NZ BDM's

Sorry, I should have made it clear, I was searching for Isaiah Oldbury, who was a mayor of Wednesbury and also an axle manufacturer.
-
Hi,
The only two mentions for an Isaiah Oldbury that are in my resources is the one I posted above and the other one in the 1911 Electoral Rolls for Kaiapoi, who was a farmer and place of residence was Empire Bridge, Chaneys.
So this for elimination then?
Cheers

Just found some divorce papers dated 1908, and from the way I read them Isaiah says ( through his solicitors in London ) he was in NZ at the time of the adultery and still is .
I can`t find him in 1901 in England with Basil, and can`t even find a birth registration for Basil Oldbury either . ???
-
Sorry the last sighting is 1911 and as Janette says, there is no death for him.
Are you one of the tree owners on Ancestry?
Cheers

Some of the newspaper articles mention about Isaiah selling all his property in NZ, and that it was not known where he now was. Perhaps he left the country once he was found out.
I think you will find the Basil OLDBURY in the school record was Basil I'ANSON, aged 5 in 1901 census, with William and Christina at the Talbot Hotel in Wednesbury,

Aha, the plot thickens ;)
-
From the 'Press' dated 21.11.1908:
There is a full description of the property known as the "Empire Bridge Farm", for sale as the owner, Mr. I. OLDBURY is leaving for England..........
Minniehaha.
-
The Otago Daily Times of 4 August 1904, p.4. THE TURF, refers to an Alderman I. OLDBURY as Mayor of Wednesday.

Are you viewing the Divorce file available on ancestry ?
[The Decree Absolute was handed down on 7 February 1910 I couldn't see (though I only skimmed over it), any mention of Mr OLDBURY beyond 1909 ?? It seems possible that probably changed his identity following all the publicity ?? ]

I think you will find the Basil OLDBURY in the school record was Basil I'ANSON, aged 5 in 1901 census, with William and Christina at the Talbot Hotel in Wednesbury,
Basil I'ANSON and his two siblings are named in the Divorce record (@ ancestry).
-
On FindMyPast there is an entry in the New Zealand postal directories, the heading is
List of manufacturers of British goods for export to NZ the date is 1931
-
Seems OLDBURY had a son also named Isaiah (bc 1878) ... and somewhere in the publicity surrounding the I'ANSON divorce, there is mention made of OLDBURY senior having handed over his business interests to a son, before he made the trip to South Africa and later came on to NZ.

Hmm. http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/search/
In WWI in Australia, a Basil Whitfield Leonard Maydwell, born Exmouth, signed up in Victoria in late 1914
His mother (address "Sea Lake" according to a note giving her consent to him signing up) was Christina Maydwell.
By age he was about right to be Basil I'Anson/Oldbury. (registered as Basil William L I'Anson, so kept the middle initials at least the same?)
There was also an Ian Christian Maydwell, born Stockton, aged 24 years 8 months in November 1915, who gives his mother as C. Maydwell (same address). This would seem to fit with William Christian I'Anson, born 1890 in Stockton.
Aha!

Anthony Atkinson I'Anson aka Anthony Atkinson Maydwell passed away (1956/7), intestate to be granted to Ian Christian I'Anson aka Ian Christian Maydwell.
Perhaps someone can find Isiah under "Maydwell"?

Someone has this family line:
http://gw.geneanet.org/sirlan?lang=en;pz=malcolm+basil;nz=i+anson;ocz=0;p=christiana;n=whitfield
So: two children b. "Whitfield" (Anthony Atkinson Whitfield and an Irene), three born "l'Anson" after marriage. Christiana's death was in 1951 NSW as they list it, but under "Maydwell". Interestingly, they also have her possibly married to an "Armstrong" in NZ. (Possibly another surname for Isaiah?)
Supposedly Christiana went to New Norfolk, Tasmania, before moving to Victoria.
She was in Sea Lake by early 1911 (trove reference to "Mrs Maydell's"):
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/89830848?searchTerm=Maydwell
No trace of Isaiah being with the family in Victoria so I'd guess that either they separated or he passed away in NZ or Australia sometime before 1911 - under what name, though!
http://prov.vic.gov.au/index_search?searchid=23
only "Anthony Ianson" (arrived in 1909 on the Runic) found on the incoming lists so far - he apparently stayed in the UK and joined the family directly.
You might be able to get in touch with descendants (via top link) and see if they have any clues as to the fate of Isaiah...
-
That is very interesting. I`m helping a friend with his family, and his Gt gt Grandmother was Hannah Oldbury, b 1838 Wednesbury. Her father was Isaiah a coach smith and also she had a brother of that same name. I have a feeling this one who went to NZ was her brother.
Incidentally Hannah married 3 times, but I am sure the second husband didn`t die before she married the third.
I found him up till 1891. Moses Southall there is only one of that name and age in the OK census.
A family habit perhaps ;)
-
in 1901 Wednesbury
Isaiah Oldbury 60 coach iron manufacturer
Sarah A Oldbury 63
1911
S A Oldbury 73 b Wednesbury
She states she is married, but there is no sign of Isaiah . maybe he is in NZ.
-
Isaiah senior died in Middlesex England in 1922. I have a copy of his will. Everything was left to his estranged wife, Sarah Ann, who continued to live in Wednesbury after he abandoned her. Presumably he and Christiana parted company and he returned to England.
I am interested in F Maydwell. I can find no reference to a marriage with Christiana.
-
Well, that`s a surprise.
Are you related ?
-
Christiana Whitfield's father is my relative.
Happy to share any information. I have a tree on Ancestry.
Do you have any information on the Maydwell connection?
-
I have no connection with anyone. Presumably the Maydwell marriage was in NZ.
I have been researching the Oldbury family for a friend of my cousin. I am in Wales.
It`s odd but even though Isaiah`s probate states he died 6 Jan 1922 in Middlesex I can`t find him in any death indexes.
He was born 1841 so was about 81. Considering he had been a successful business man he didn`t leave much.
This must be Sarah Ann.
Sarah A Oldbury death

Joanna, is there any detail in the will about where he died.
He isn`t showing in any online death indexes , Could he have died overseas ?
-
53 Torrington Square Middlesex is the entry on the Probate record. My tree on Ancestry is Bailey_Joanna it's all on there.
-
As for the money, I think he passed his business assets to his son. Not sure what happened after he sold Empire Farm... No idea why he doesn't appear on any death indexes.
-
Joanne, do you have the actual will, or just the probate entry as on your Anc page.
It would be interesting to see it all and perhaps have some clues.
Isiah is proving very difficult to find.
Am sending you a PM.
-
I don't know what a PM is...
Here is the will...interesting that it refers to an alias: John Wilson.
Also, his executor is in Australia...
-
It looks possible that he was registered and buried as John Wilson.
Please see the other thread on the same topic http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=736841.msg5828321#msg5828321

I downloaded the will, but it won`t open.

I now have the will .

Christiana Whitfield was my great, great grandmother. My grandmother was Ianthy Ethel Maydwell. Christiana took up the Maydwell surname as an alias, as her and Isaiah split when they reached Melbourne, Victoria, Australia after leaving Tasmania, Australia sometime circa 1909-1911.
I have researched as much as I can....it can all be found on Ancestry. The only child of Christiana's that detail is scarce on is that of her youngest daughter Christina Whitfield...all the other children have been accounted for.
I hope this helps...
-
My grandfather was Ian Christian Maydwell and I would love to get a copy of the Maydwell/I'Anson family tree. My father was Noel Clifton Maydwell.
