Title: Haines family lived in Ballarat from c1865 to the present day looking for burial
Post by: sft456 on Thursday 01 January 15 12:14 GMT (UK)
Hello

The Australian branch of the Haines family lived in Ballarat from @1865 to the present day. Can you assist me if any are buried in the Cemetery and if there are details?

Here are some names:

George Haines (possibly bur at Caringham)
Rebecca Ellen
Susannah
Frederick George
Alice
Harry
Mary Ann
Edwin Walter
Christopher Hurst
William Christopher
Mark Raymond

Ellen and John Edward Williamson
Lucy Gough and Samuel Edward Morgan
Kate Elizabeth and Philip Ofas

I think there must be many others, unless they are bur at Wonthaggi or thereabouts

I'm not very knowledgeable about Australia, so apologies for any confusion

Thanks Jane (England)

Looking on Ryerson Index ( www.ryersonindex.org ) for HAINES in Victoria 1865-1965, gives only 5 notices covering 3 people.
(I didn't try the alternative spelling of HAYNES)

JUst under the Green Search Ryerson button is now a brown button for AustCemIndex.
Click on that and put Ballaratt in the cemetery slot with no other names and you'll see that there are quite a few cemeteries at Ballaratt.  I tried the first one, and Ballarat Old, no luck.

I think this index is only of monumental inscriptions so if they don't have a tombstone then it won't be on that.

If you go to http://ballaratcemeteries.com.au/php/results.php  you'll find a few HAINES listed.
Or you might have to go to http://ballaratcemeteries.com.au  and fill in the slots yourself to get to that page.

It should be Carngham not Carningham.   If George HAINES is buried in that cemetery he does not have a headstone.
http://www.australiancemeteries.com/vic/pyrenees/carnghamdata.htm

Have a search here for Ballarat Old and New Cemeteries and Crematorium.
http://ballaratcemeteries.com.au/php/search.php

I have found the following on my resource.

Ballarat New Cemetery
HAINES Alice  2 hours   15 Oct 1887  Armstrong Street, Ballarat  New Cemetery Church of England C 4.2

HAINES Edwin 47 years  22 Nov 1895  Doveton Street, Ballarat  Slaughterman  Church of England C 4.2

HAINES George  73 years  15 Jun 1905   Burbank Street, Ballarat Old Age Pensioner  Church of England 9.25

HAINES Rebecca Ellen  54 years 15 Jan 1885  Wills Street, Ballarat  Independent A 6.17

Ballarat Old Cemetery
HAINES Harry  4 months   20 Dec 1861  Specimen Hill, Ballarat   Location Unknown

There are other HAINES at Ballarat Cemeteries however little more detail eg year and place of death will enable us to help you further.

Cheers  :)

Hi

Can you help us with any of these Haines below. There are many further generations living in the Ballarat area, Wonthaggi etc upto the present day. I believe Christopher William d 10/4/2014 in Wontahggi, and there is a write up in the local press, though I'm not sure how to access this

We have been trying to trace as many of our Haines families Australian Branch as possible, since George took his wife Rebecca Ellen and 5? children from England to Australia in the 1860's - cannot find a  passenger record for their emigration...we haven't found it in the Assisted/Unassisted passenger lists on the wbe sites recommended in

George and Rebecca with children Frederick George, Ellen, Lucy Gough, Harry (Henry) and Kate Elizabeth set up home in the Ballarat area of Victoria and Rebecca had 2 further children - Edwin Walter and Christopher Hurst Haines in 1870 and 1871

There appears to be a gap of 10 years between Kate Elizabeth b Dec qtr 1859 Isle of Wight, England and Edwin b @1870 Ballarat, Australia. I think George also remarried in 1887 in Ballarat to a Susannah Carman after his first wife's death in 1885, though we cannot be sure

This is what we have of the first Generation:

George Haines (86)
Family emigrated to Ballarat, Australia during 1860s
Railway Clerk in England then Hawker/Peddler in Australia
Kirdford, Sussex (bap 6/11/1821 - 2/2/1908) Australia

(7 children all d young)

Lucy Gough Haines (77?)

Moreton, Queensland, Australia
m 1880 Ballarat, Victoria, Australia
Samuel John Morgan (?)
 Engineer

Lucy Haines & Samuel Morgan photographed in 1878 before m

Harry (Henry) Haines (?)

(6 children)

William Thomas Haines (?)
Emigrated to Australia during 1860s

(does this child exist?)

No more is known about the above children, other than that shown. I believe George & Rebecca had 2 more children in Australia as below:

10 year gap 1859-1870

Edwin Walter Haines
Born & died in Australia
Ballarat E, Victoria (@1870 - 1870) Australia

Christopher Hurst ‘Hirsty’ Haines (70)
Born & lived in Australia
Foreman in the State Coalmine, Wonthaggi, Victoria
(opened in 1910, closed in 1968 - now a tourist attraction)
Ballarat E, Victoria (25/1/1871 - 12/2/1941?) Waggi, Inverloch, Victoria
m 1894 in Victoria, Australia
Mary Martha ‘Minnie’ Croy (65/66)
Scarsdale, Victoria, (7/6/1873 - 14/10/1939) ?
(dau of Peter & Elizabeth A Nicholson -
both b in Great Britain)

We would be grateful for any further info, if possible. There are @25 further Haines in the second Generation and more still after that. We do know that there are still members of the family living in Wonthaggi 150 years on, one of whom died in 2014. I did contact someone (not a Haines) in the town via a web site called, I thimk,Wonthaggi Genealogy Inc. However despite an initial positive response, nothing ever came of our enquiry and so no additional info

Thanks in anticipation

Jane (from England)

Hi Jane, I will see what I can find for the Ballarat area folk, but Wonthaggi is a long way from here so I cant help with them. It may take a little time as I am back at work on Monday and we are having extremely hot weather at the moment, but I will keep you posted.

PROV has a few wills for some of your family which you may like to look up.  Unfortunately those relating to deaths after 1925 have not yet been digitised but there are some useful death dates given.
http://prov.vic.gov.au/index_search?searchid=54

There are some HAINES burials listed at Wonthaggi, including a William Hurst HAINES 1900-1943.
http://www.australiancemeteries.com/vic/bass_coast/wonthaggign_data.htm

Tanswell's Hotel is still in Beechworth which was a gold-mining town in the late 1800s. The Thomas TANSWELL who married Ellen WILLIAMSON would have been born in 1853 according to his death certificate, so I suspect that the Thomas TANSWELL who bought the hotel in 1870 may well have been his father.

Have you had a look in Trove?
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/search?adv=y
Type in Haines and tick the Victoria box (for now) And start looking. I found 174,000 references to Haines in Victorian newspapers, you may need to specify dates to narrow the search a little.
For your Ballarat Haines Trove only has the Ballarat Courier digitised for the WW1 years, The Ballarat Star is completely digitised but didn't last long. After you have waded through that 174,000 then have a look at the newspapers in the rest of Australia, often choice juicy bits of news were reported in newspapers in very distant places. Gosssip would be reported in the Melbourne Argus, News of mine disasters in Victoria were often reported in other mining towns, Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill for example. You can find things that never gets passed down in family legends.

Rusted I have spent quite some time searching TROVE.  The HAINES references in the Ballarat newspapers in the era are for a policitian not connected to this family.  I can find nothing to date for this particular HAINES line.

The OP was logged in yesterday and perhaps we have found nothing new.

This is a famous surname.    Commander Stafford Bettesworth Haines took Aden by force in 1839 after the Sultan of Lahedj reneged on a signed deal for the British to lease Aden as a coaling station.     Since he married in Alton Hants in 1831 (buried in Bombay in 1860) there may be a connection to your family.    "Sultans of Aden" by Gordon Waterfield tells his story and what happened in Aden.

I think I'll call a halt to this research until Jane responds to the information. She has been logged in again today.   Possibly there is no new information however I did find the second and third marriages for Ellen born Portsmouth and her death.  Can't see the point of typing up research if there is no response at all and I have more.

Thanks for this, but I know of no connection with our family, though the Haines' do have a connection in Bombay through Mr Robert Haines, a surgeon there in the 1860s

Thank you for this information.

Following on from this, I have managed to find almost everything about Susannah, parents, g parents, dob, dod m details to Simon Carman, her siblings, her children - 10 of them etc etc - there is possibly even a picture of her on Ancestry, if I had access. But no details of her m to George HAINES except 1887 Ballarat

How can I obtain a dd/mm//yyyy date for their marriage, location etc? If it is possible to buy a certificate what details will it show? I notice also that many of the dates are just years. We appear to have much more information in England. Is it possible to obtain more details?

Hi Jane

the information you have been given is just what is on the index.  Australian BMD certificates are very informative and those from Victoria particularly good.

This link gives a guide to the information that is asked for when registering a B M or D in Victoria.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,373754.0.html

Of course it depends on the knowledge/truthfulness of the informant/s as to the accuracy of what is recorded. Usually marriage certificates have the best information as it is supplied by the couple themselves.  Death certificates can be a bit hit and miss as the informant may not know information re the early life of the deceased, however they are very much more informative than English ones where there is no requirement to show any family relationships.  My 9 GBP has often seemed a waste of money!!

Historical images of Victorian registrations can be downloaded for $AU20.  As it is an actual image it can be very useful in comparing signatures etc.

You need the reg no which has been supplied in the information above.

None of the online marriage indexes for England give place of birth of bride and groom.

Very many thanks again for all your info.

I am struggling to know where to start. A few questions arise however

1 George Frederick Haines d aged 74 7\3\1925 W Maitland - but he could only have been 71 as he was b Sep qtr 1853 Exeter

2 Laurence George E (Epthorp, after his mother's mother's maiden name) was son of George Frederick not Fredk Paul (who d aged 3)

3 I have found a Rita Stella Guttridge b 1892 Australia Birth Index (Victoria 824) as a dau of Fredk G and Alice (nee Booth)

4 There is an FT for John Edward Williamson on A........y if I could read it

The original Australian section of the HAINES Family Tree I posted was researched by me with the help of A........y. and the Australian Electoral Rolls (for further members of the Family) - Christopher Hurst HAINES family and grand children upto 1980. and finally Christopher William HAINES (Hirsty's gson) who d 10/4/2014 Wonthaggi

The ggrandaughter of Lucy Gough HAINES (dau of George who d 1908) who m Samuel Morgan 1880, contacted me and sent me some of her family (as far as Catherine Ellen Morgan b 1861, but no further) She has no further details

I also contacted Wonthaggi Inc who told me there were members of the HAINES family there ie Christopher William (above) et al but I have received no info despite spending 6 moths waiting. I gave up in frustration. I was hoping to actually contact a member of the current family

Thanks for this

Not the newspapers, but on A........y - 2 references, one for Christopher William HAINES d 2014 Obit. Collection and one for Mark Raymond Haines d 15/10/2013 (his son?) Australia & New Zealand Obit. Collection, if I could see

I can only post the information as I find it.
Information on any bdm or cemetery record is only as good as the knowledge of the informant.  It is your person of interest....the surname detailed albeit slightly incorrect, for his mother GUTTERIDGE was fortunate.  Usually only the given name of the mother is posted and that was obviously not known by the informant.

Frederick George's wife, Alice, pre-deceased him so you would need to purchase a transcription of his death certificate to validate the research.  At the moment the price is AUD$20.  The transcription is emailed to you.

The same comment applies to the death information for their son Lawrence.

I treat all online trees with great caution.  I know some of your information has been sourced from an online tree by the following incorrect spelling and incorrect place of burial.

I would expect you to find some of the information yourself :) I will mention that my resources are not on one CD.  I have to load numerous discs to find information about a family in Victoria and that is time consuming.  This is a difficult thread because there is more than request for the same family.  This birth is on a different disc to the earlier ones.

Birth
HAINES Reta Stella Gutridge
Father Frederick George  Mother Alice BOOTH

When I started my family research in Victoria I purchased pages of all the surname entries from the Vic BDM website with my surname of interest and each page cost at that time around 99 cents. Fortunately my maiden name is not a commonly occurring one ;)  I have only purchased images of certificates if I wanted to know the causes of death.  Not a large family so not an expensive exercise.  I am definitely not suggesting you purchase all the HAINES names!!  A number of us have the resources to help you.  Many libraries subscribe to the Library Edition of Ancestry.com.   Perhaps you could enquire at your local library.

You would need to purchase an image of the certificate to find if Henry was married and if so, the name of his wife should be noted along with all issue both living and deceased at the time of Henry's death.

Thank you Judith for this information, it is most useful

I have bought many English Certs in the past and 1 very good Scottish M Cert (where both parents of bride and groom are recorded - why didn't England do this. I agree English D certs are almost a waste of money

Is this transcription of Carman/Hewstone M a download at $AU20 or is this an actual M Cert (as one might obtain in England? costing $AU21? Is the amount of info on a download the same as on a Cert?

I will buy a Cert of one of the Haines marriages and see how I get on

Thanks, Jane

The marriage information for Kate Elizabeth HAINES was given to me by her still living cousin (living in Australia) together with their 5 children Julia, Joseph, Hannah, Rebecca, Miriam and Minnie, plus gchildren (children of Joseph) Philip Hening? b 1917 and Amelia Frances b 1919. From your research, all these are unrelated to our Kate?

Is it possible to find out what happened to our Kate?

I am surprised that you have taken such an interest in George's second wife as they didn't have any children, therefore no descendants.

I wasn't aware I had taken a lot of interest in George's second wife. You gave me some information about her and I was able to complete my findings. I like to tie up all the loose ends as I have tried to do throughout The Tree. Those on our tree are not just dates, they are also people with a life. Susannah was part of George's life :)

HAINES Kate Elizabeth   Wandsworth  1d/274

Your living cousin in Australia doesn't appear to have purchased any certificates to validate her research.  It would appear that Kate Elizabeth died before the family emigrated to Australia.  You would need the certificate to validate that though.

Victorian BMDs have 2 types of historical record for purchase.

Uncertified Image.  This is an image of the actual record as held by the Victorian Department.  It is immediately ready for download (as soon as you have paid by credit card) and usually includes a whole page so that you can see other people's records as well.

Historical Certificate which contains the same information as an uncertified image, as well as the Registrar's certification, signature and seal. It is posted to you and is dearer.
See more at: http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/home/family+history/family+history+certificates/#sthash.ijs2dmHK.dpuf

You cannot use the uncertified image for legal purposes, however for family history it is excellent and it's all you would need. Sometimes, if you have two Bs or Ms or Ds in the same area at about the same time you will be lucky and the images for both will be on the page with the one you have ordered.  For example weddings of siblings on the same day or deaths of a mother and child at about the same time etc.  (Hope that makes sense)
