Title: Norman John Makepeace B:1910, North shields
Post by: Schoch on Saturday 03 January 15 20:26 GMT (UK)
Trouble tacking this one.
I have his birth as July 1910, in North Shields, and the 1911 census giving his parents as George and  Margaret at  60 Trevor Terr. North Shields.  However I can not find him after that, no marriage, no death, no immigration.

The Makepeace family were at that time were mostly in Newcastle and also in Gateshead (Durham) but no sign of him there ether.

Any assistance most appreciated

Richard

Have you identified the deaths of his parents and any siblings?

Hi Chempat,

Have not found any siblings yet, nor the death of his father. His mother Margaret Isabella Makepeace (nee Hogg) died in 1960 in Newcastle.
Also have his Aunts/Uncles (and there are a few of them) all well documented.
Just not Norman  :(

Hi Boo,

Will be looking further with Sydney but my main inquiry is with Norman.

I have checked Free BMD for both of them myself and nothing showed up.

Thanks

Richard

Should you get Margaret's death certificate, on the off-chance that Norman is the informant, or it may show whether her husband is still alive?

There is a picture of George Makepeace in a tree on ancestry - have you been in contact with the tree owner?

Hi,
Have you considered that he may have preferred to use his middle name John instead of Norman.

Cheers
John

Hi John,
I think I would have as well.

Yup I looked at that but there turns out to be more than a few "Johns" (no pun intended)  Makepeaces around back then.
Have found a possible on a  BOAC (forerunner of the British Airways) flight to New York in 1953. However that does not even give an age that I could find.

Cheers

Richard

Google "Norman Makepeace" scroll down to Page 3, and find file entitled 'Merchant Navy Awards: London Gazette 27 April 1943' and open.
This shows that a Norman Makepeace Rank: Second Engineer was awarded a MBE.  Ship: Toorak.

Is this your NJM ... ?

For information on the SS Toorak:
Google "SS Toorak" and open file entitled 'British Steam Tanker Toorak - Ships Nostalgia'
Open and scroll down to message dated 18th November 2011 from 'eriskey' for a comprehensive history of the SS Toorak.

I do hope this has been a help.

Further to Priscilla's posting, I looked at the Merchant Navy Seaman Records on FindMyPast. There 'is' a Norman Makepeace in there, he was a 4th Engineer c1919-1921 (and so is a candidate to be the Norman in WW2) but he was born 13th Nov 1893, Felling.

If he is one of your extended Makepeace family though, there is a super photo of him on the card :-)

Thanks both of you.

Yes I agree.... I don't think he is the Norman that I am looking for... but he could be in the tree somewhere and with a bit more investigation I think he may be added later.
I had seen the Naval Norman on Ancestry before but eliminated him for the time being as he was born to early for the one I am looking for.

Again

Thank you for your help

Richard

Hi
I wonder if this is worth looking at. There is a death registration for a Norman J Makeplace in the 2nd quarter of 1911.The record on find my past shows the child as having been born and died in  Tynemouth Northumberland in 1911.  I cant find a birth registration for this child in 1911 or 1910 so I wonder if this may be a wrong transcription.

Cheers
John

Hi John,

Think you may have found it.  Always thought this was possible as no marriage or later death could be found, and if he did not go overseas then the alternative is "abducted by aliens" (not sure that was popular back then).

The other Norman was born too soon to be him so I am left with the 1911 death.  Am not a member of Find My Past and Ancestry does not show the death at all (nor does Family Search or Free BMD).

Will put a note on his name showing the 1911 death until I can enter a citation there

Thanks Very Much

Free bmd does not have any Makepeace deaths in the second quarter of 1911 - so a page missing somehow?

Added:
Definitely MakepLace on the image:

Deaths June quarter  1911
Norman J Makeplace     0   Tynemouth

I can see it on FreeBMD, its transcribed (as per the GRO index image) as Makeplace, Norman J age 0 Q2 1911 Tynemouth 10b 147
Its also on Ancestry (as Ancestry use the Free BMD database for pre 1916 deaths)

If I were you I'd email the  in North Tyneside registrars and ask them to check the register for the surname as I think its an error in the GRO index (the GRO won't change the index but at least you will know for sure). If you also give them the father's name and the address you have from the census, they will probably check to see if its the right entry for this little boy.

Impressive find by Artkane !
