Does anyone have any info on the McDonough family who lived around the Brecon area in the second half of the 19th century (and probably into the 20th/possibly still there)?
My great great grandfather was named Phillip McDonough (b. circa 1849) and was either an Irish immigrant or his father (I think named William McDonough) was. I think they were travellers and the family seemed to live in a few different areas of Wales but mainly Breconshire.
The census makes things confusing because sometimes it says he was born in Lincolnshire and other times it says Ireland. I thought it could be different people but the children's names and ages are the same. Also the surname is often spelt completely wrong although people seem to have corrected it on the Ancestry census listings. Another strange thing is that it's sometimes listed as Macdonald which I thought might be a mistake but having read memoirs written by my great uncle apparently some of the family did change their name.
Grateful for any information!
Thanks.

Rosegold89,
To help people connect with your family, could you put the information from the censuses so that people know the names of any children/grandchildren/etc and so can see more easily if they recognise their family there?

Just putting the 1881, with a submitted connection to his name - was that you or someone else?

Hello, I didn't list any census details because there are numerous generations of people with this name in the area, all of which are related so I'm just looking for info on any of them really.

Hi Rosegold,
It seems as though you have census information fir your family and you perhaps have marriage details- you mention Patrick's father, William.
What kind of information are you seeking? Do you have any gaps that you want to fill or is it extended family members?
Regards
Heywood

Well I was wondering if they're still in the area and also whether knows why some of the names changed and why the census information as to where some of them were born varies from Ireland to Lincoln (if it's actually the same people) as well just any general information about the family history.

Philip Sr was using the name McDonald 1903 when his son Philip joined the Militia = looks like the Army would only accept the registered name for Philip Jr.
Philip Sr was also Militia Reserve

Hi RoseGold
Philip McDonough was my great great grandfather too. There are still a lot of us living in the Brecon area. Which of his children are you descended from? Thomas was my great grandfather.

Hi Rose Gold,
The site won't let me message you direct. Your gg grandmother Katey was my gg aunt. My grampa was Henry (harry) McDonough who was Thomas McDonoughs son.
I recall my grampa saying that his grandfather (Phillip) came to wales from county Mayo and they were travellers and tin men. The surname has changed over the years due to different pronunciations. My nan used to say macdonach. I have found a lot of my information on ancestry as unfortunately the family don't appear to have been very close. I never met any of my grampas siblings. I have a range of census documents, war records and prison records I could send you. I have also visited the churchyards in Brecon and taken photos.
