Title: Imelda (Emalda) Edith Chivers
Post by: Patroy on Saturday 17 January 15 09:37 GMT (UK)
I have been trying to help a friend discover her maternal family and unfortunately am out of my depth as her mother was born in Nairobi.  With the help of others I have discovered the following:

Emalda Edith Chivers, born 2 August 1923 in Nairobi, Ukamba
Father = William Chivers
Mother = Edith Henrietta Norton

It would seem that Edith Henrietta Norton married twice and both times to someone called Chivers.  Children are:

Anthony Helfern Chivers born 1 April 1921 at Nairobi (father is John Edward Chivers)
Elvin May Chivers born 10 May 1922 at Nairobi (father Wiliam Chivers)
Emalda Edith Chivers born 2 August 1923 in Nairobi (father William Chivers)
Helen Mary Chivers born 3 Augusut 1924 in Nairobi (father William Chivers)

There is a passenger listing for Helen Mary Chivers (the last child) who left Mombasa, Kenya and arrived in London aboard the Braemar Castle on the 18 June 1957.

Following Imelda's marriage (married name was Stevens) she came to England and lived in Birmingham.

If anyone can point me in the right direction to find information on Imelda's parents I would be grateful.  :)

Are all the people mentioned in your post deceased? (we aren't allowed to post details of anyone who might still be living)

To the best of our knowledge yes they are, certainly Imelda and Anthony have confirmed deaths and I have just found Helen's death.

Hello

I think Edith Chivers was Edith Henrietta Norton before she was married to Chivers family members. I believe it is the same Edith Norton who later married James Muncaster.

James Muncaster married Edith Henrietta Norton (no mention that she was previously married) at Mbeya, Tanzania on 25 June 1960. He died at Johannesburg in 1971.

I believe Edith Norton Chivers had a male child in 1932 and lived in Tabora for a short time. She left her family but did not remarry. She left the child with his father and remarried later on with James Muncaster.

She died in 1971 I think and there is a grave photo available for a grave in South Africa.

There is a lot of mystery with Edith Henrietta Norton.

Wow, thank you for that reply, it is difficult enough to try and find records for this country without her adding further mystery to it.  Certainly my friend remembers her mum, Imelda saying that they had lots of servants and that her parents drank a lot.

I'd like to find out:

1) why Imelda's mum, Edith, left the Chivers family.
2) When was Edith Norton born and where?

Also, is there any photo of Edith as it might be different person.

Is this the Edith your friend is searching for?

I will need to get the photos out that she has given me but it certainly looks promising.  Certainly an interesting family, even though they do intend to give us headaches

My friend thinks the child born in 1932 was Jimmy (James) and went to live in South Africa.  She also remembers Imelda (or Emelda) getting an invitation to her mum's wedding this would have been circa 1959. I am away from tomorrow for a few days but as soon as I get back I will scan the photos that she has lent to me.  One thing did occur to me, some time ago someone told me that there was a tree on Ancestry for Edith Henrietta Norton, as I do not have Ancestry, only FindMyPast, I could not verify this.

Hi, sorry I haven't come back to you with the promised photos but I have been away for a short break however I sent the photo to my friend and she confirms that it is her grandmother and she thinks she has a similar or the same photo and she will try and find it this week.  Would it be easier if we corresponded by email, mine is (*)

Edith Norton Chivers had a male child in 1932; his name was Alfred Dominic Peter Angelini, born in Tabora and died on 6 January 2008 in Kent, UK. She left the child with his father. I believe, later on, the child was looked after by nuns in a convent and then by an archbishop. His father was taken as a prisoner of war. I am researching more about Edith:

1. How many children did she have and if any are still alive.
2. Why did she put her children in an orphanage in Dar-es-salaam
3. Who the father of Jim was.

Hi as you can see I've had a long conversation with African Queen regarding Edith Henrietta.  To the best of our knowledge and with what we have managed to work out, Edith firstly married William Chivers who is the father of Anthony Halfern, then she married John Edward Chivers and had Elvin May, Imelda Edith and Helen Mary.

African Queen says that Edith Henrietta is the mother of her grandfather, Alfredo Angelini who was also left with his father on the understanding that Edith never contacted him.

None of Edith's children are still alive but her grand daughter Pam is a very close friend and is interested in finding out more about her family.  If you could send me a personal message I will let you have further details.

I was told some time ago, that Edith became a Red Cross nurse. I wonder if that's true and if there would be records of nurses out in Africa?

If that is true then the Red Cross keep a lot of their records, I recently obtained from them the record of when my father was taken prisoner of war in Singapore.  Their records are kept in Geneva I believe.

On the Red Cross there is this record, whether it is the right person or not is another question http://www.redcross.org.uk/About-us/Who-we-are/History-and-origin/First-World-War/Card?fname=Edith&sname=Norton&id=161847&first=true&last=true

I think Edith Chivers Norton would have been too young to be a nurse with the dates for the Edith on that website. But thank you anyway.

Hi, I have some information about Chivers abd Norton family that may clear thngs up a bit. Happy to share. I believe there was only 1 Chivers that Edith married but am reliably informed she also married a Moffat later as well as maybe having other reationships.
My father stayed with Imelda and her husband in Birmingham once when on leave to the UK from Kenya.

I know that Edith Norton Chivers had lots of children and that one boy called Jimmy was born I think after Alfred - could he have been Jimmy Moffat? Moffat seems to be a Scottish clan name. I'm trying to put together some sort of timeline about Edith and this latest clue might be the missing link.Would be happy to share what I know.

Hi,

I'm Imelda's grandson. James Edward Stevens, son of Edward James Stevens.

Edward 'Eddy' died in 2002 and Imelda died in 2003.

I'm on a similar search, I lost contact back in 2002 after my fathers funeral.

I want to flesh this out a little more. I'm originally from Birmingham, and the name she died with 'Stevens' goes back many generations in Birmingham and the surrounding counties.

I'm one of three of Edward's children. I'm the youngest from his relationship with my mother Cherie Susan French, the other two, Jonathan and Anthony from his one and only marriage to Christine Glynis Harper  who died in 2019.

I never met Edward Frank Stevens, my grandfather, he died two years before I arrived.

From what I remember of Imelda, who I called 'Nanny Millie', she was a warm well spoken woman. And she once came a holiday to Lanzarote with us. She wasn't keen, and argued with my father explaining how she didn't want to come.

I was too young at the time to pick up on family dynamics so I don't know if me losing contact after my father's funeral was by choice or I was simply never informed of her passing.

I'll see if I can dig out some pictures of her.

From what I know, there's plenty of families linked in with Imelda, plenty of 3rd and 4th cousins!
