Hi I wonder if anybody can help one of my relatives who was born in 1897 for some reason changed her surname is there any way I can find out why she died in 1965. We do not know when she changed her surname.
She was born Winifred Cox in Chelsea London. And then changed her surname to Grant. She also had a child that she gave uo for adoption.
Thanks for any help ali :)

To know cause of death you will have to buy the death cert.
Have you found her in 1911?
Did she still have the Cox name then?
Did she marry?

Under English common law, a person may take a new surname, perfectly legally, without drawing up any formal record, provided that such action is not undertaken for the purpose of fraud of avoidance of obligation, etc.

I think the poster meant "changed her surname is there any way I can find out why; she died in 1965."

Oh ok thanks for that maybe she changed her surname as that might of been the fathers surname of the child that she gave up .
Thanks Ali ;)

I mourn the death of the comma.

All sorts of reasons why she may have changed her name. Two of the most common would be if her mother married/remarried and she took her stepfathers name, or if she was born before her parents marriage amd registered in her mothers maiden name but when they married used her fathers name.
Have you researched her background to see if either of these scenarios, or anything else similar, applies?
