Title: Marriage of Christopher Robson - circa 1812 possibly South Shields
Post by: ragt39 on Friday 23 January 15 11:50 GMT (UK)
I am researching a Robson family and on the 1851 census I have Christopher Robson, aged 70 living in Westoe with his son William (38) & his daughter Sarah (34).  Whilst Christopher was born in Longhaugh, Bellingham, Northumberland both of his children were born in South Shields.  I am trying to trace Christopher's marriage which could be around 1812 or even earlier possibly in South Shields or may even be in Northumberland.  Any suggestions?

What is his wifes name, is it Sarah.
Are these the christenings for William & Sarah, the same day in South Shields

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J7P2-X89

also a John Hall Robson the same day, same parents names

I wasn't aware of his wife's name but this looks promising.  It also explains why I couldn't find their baptisms around their date of birth - obviously had all 3 christened on the same day.  Now I need to find the marriage of Christopher Robson to a Sarah - and it could be Sarah Hall.  Also need to establish year of bhirth for John Hall Robson.  Many thanks, Rosie

The Bishops Transcripts show the 3 baptisms but the only extra bit of detail is father's occupation - joiner

It's looking good for Sarah being Christopher's wife, burial 25th July 1839 aged 67 St Hilda, Sarah Robson Hill Street - Christopher was shown living in Hill Street in the 1841 census

If my idea is right that his wife was a Sarah Hall then this would fit nicely with that burial record -

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JWNS-68W

Shirl, the occupation of 'joiner' fits in - on his son William's marriage certificate it states Christopher was a 'Joiner' despite the census calling him a 'Sawyer'.
Now, in my opinion, we need to find a marriage for Christopher Robson & Sarah Hall somewhere around 1812

I couldn't see anything online for a Sarah Hall marriage, but the Sarah Hall baptism is tempting.

A sawyer worked with wood so it is not surprising to see him called a joiner.
Have you looked at www.durhamrecordsonline.com for a marriage?    www.genuki.org.uk may have useful links too.   Particularly http://joinermarriageindex.co.uk/

Thanks Sillgen, I've checked them out but no further joy on the marriage of Christopher Robson & Sarah.  I am of the opinion that John Hall Robson was the eldest of the 3 children - I think he married Jane Robinson in 1837 (see FreeBMD) and John & Jane Robson appear on the 1841 & 1851 censuses
and one of their sons was named Christopher (after his grandad).  The ages shown for John on these census records (30 in 1841), (47 - I think this should be 40 amended to 41 in 1851) & (50 in 1861) suggest he was born around 1809-11.  This would suggest the marriage would have been around 1808-09.

The John Hall Robson who married Jane in 1837 was apparently widowed at the time of marriage.

I wonder if the Sarah Fairweather who married a Christopher Robson c1806 was the Sarah Hall who married James Fairweather 27 May 1795 at St Hilda's  :-\

That's got to be worth following up, the BTs unfortunately don't give anything else except that the marriage was by banns and that they were both of the chapelry of St Hilda.

Familysearch has possible christenings for children of James & Sarah Fairweather in South Shields (one gives mothers surname Hall) in 1796/1799/1801 and 1802.
There is a burial for a James Fairweather but the transcript says he is single  ::)  Born c1773 died 1803
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JCZD-GXB

It is worth further investigation

I agree worth checking, the BTs don't say James was single,  died 16th buried 17th Oct 1803 St Hilda aged 30.

Looking a good possibility

Many, many thanks to both Rosie & Shirl for a fantastic result - I think there were only 3 children for James & Sarah - Elizabeth (1796), Alice (1798, sadly died 1801) & Ann (1802).  Thanks a million, girls - this is what Rootschat is all about!
