Was she also known as Harriet McDERMOTT her mother's maiden name?

If this is correct then I have her details.

I have just started researching this lady and found a mention of the name McDermott just today, I have no idea where that comes from but I do believe this to be the same person, I am stumped as to how she came by the names of "Grace Stuchbury"as there is also the surname James mentioned. There is someone who has researched her extensively however I do not at this stage have contact with the person, it's all 3rd hand.
I'd appreciate whatever the record says about Harriet McDermott.

Hi Joanne

there was a Mary Ann Sheehan who was transported and went out on Emma Eugina but she went on earlier in 1850 arriving Van Diemans land 1851

sandiep - Thank you so much for the follow up! Unfortunately, this Mary Anne Sheehan is 10 years too old. The co-incidence is very interesting though.

I was *hoping* for a ship-board romance between Ship Surgeon Superintendent, John Simpson Howard (my GGGGrandfather), and a Mary Ann Sheehan who was born in 1843, London. They subsequently get married in Australia, and carry on to live in India. However, I can't make the facts fit.  :'(

are we sure of birth date cos they married 1858 so she would only be 15

Hi - Yes, pretty sure of the birthday (census records). I'm not sure about the marriage in Australia. I know my GGGGrandfather was John Simpson Howard. He married Mary Ann (Last name unknown). I was hoping it was the marriage record found in Australia. I've not found any other records. And, as always, it could be a totally different John Simpson Howard. The coincidences were just looking promising.

Have you looked at the marriage in Kensington of John Howard and a Mary Ann Thomas in 1860

only a possible not sure
Title: Re: EMMA EUGENIA Passenger list May 1858 arrival Fremantle
Post by: joannemclean on Wednesday 10 July 19 22:07 BST (UK)
John Simpson Howard was born - 11 FEB 1830 • Bangalor, Madras, India. I am not sure about the 1860 marriage in Kensington. Howard had been in the UK for medical schooling, but had returned to India by 26 August 1858.

Also, later on Mary Ann travelled from England back to Bombay with a "John Alexander Sheen", so I was hoping this was her brother.

Thanks for checking! I always appreciate another set of eyes!

Their daughter's marriage:

REINER - HOWARD - May 21st, John Batist, son of the late Andrew Reiner, Esq., of Baden-Baden, to Florence Mary Lloyd, only surviving daughter of Surgeon-Major John Simpson Howard, M.B., M.R.C.S., Indian Army, retired, formerly of Highbury, Northam, and niece of the late Mrs. Lloyd Williams, of Gwernant Park, Cardiganshire, and 22, Imperial-square, Cheltenham.

I think that 'niece' should actually be 'great niece'.  Mrs LLOYD-WILLIAMS was Ann Maria MITCHELL who married Caulfield Tynte LLOYD-WILLIAMS in 1841 at Marylebone, and her father was Alexander MITCHELL (marriage cert says 'Gentleman').

Ann Maria MITCHELL
Baptism Date:    1 Apr 1821
Baptism Place:    St Marylebone, Westminster, England
Father:    Alexander MITCHELL
Mother:    Eleanor

Also baptised at Marylebone to John and Eleanor were Eleanor Catherine in 1816 and Alexander in 1818.

Eleanor Catherine married in May 1837 to John SHEEHAN at Marylebone and Ann Maria was a witness.  Pre civil reg., but baptism registers show him as an Engineer.

GRO indexes show amongst others, Mary born in 1841 and John Alexander born in 1848.  In 1851 they are both with their uncle Alexander in Westminster.  I can see baptisms for some of the children of John and Eleanor in London, but not Mary.

I know my GGGGrandfather was John Simpson Howard. He married Mary Ann (Last name unknown).

I assume this is the baptism and birth reg. of their only child to be born in England:

John Cecil HOWARD
Baptism Date: 7 Nov 1880
Baptism Place: Leckhampton, St Peter, Gloucestershire, England
Father: John Simpson HOWARD M.D.
Mother: Mary Ann

HOWARD, CECIL
Mother's maiden surname: SHEEN

John and Mary Ann's son Henry (Harry) Herbert married his cousin Hannah Ellen COX in 1901 and she is with the HOWARDs in 1901 in Sussex.  Her parents were Samuel Robert COX and Mary Ann's sister Eleanor Ann Maria SHEEHAN who were married in 1859.

Hi Debra, I've been unable to find this:

" In 1851 they are both with their uncle Alexander in Westminster. "  Can you point me in the right direction? I am very interested in this, as Eleanor Catherine Mitchell Sheen and her four children (including her one month old son!) apparently were admitted to the work house for one day (31 Oct 1848). I've very interested in what happened to this family. Mary Anne ends up marrying a surgeon and moving to India ...

Cheers,
Joanne

Hello. for those that have access to the Emma Eugenia passenger list arriving Fremantle in 1858, could you please confirm Susanah Murphy was on it. In the 1859 census she says that she was and that she was from Tyrone. She would be about 22yo as she says she was 24 in the census. Any information appreciated, free/convict etc. She married a ticket of leaver in 1866 after her first husband died so she herself may have been one. Regards Phil

Did you mean 08 July 1858 or 1585? If 1858, you might try http://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/Digitised/Search?ST=1&AT=search&k=%22Emma%20Eugenia%22 which mentioned the Emma Eugenia arriving 2nd September 1858. However I'm not sure it would have taken nearly 2 months to get there from Fremantle.

Ha! Why yes, I did mean 1858 not 1585!

"Dr Howard and wife" left on Emma Eugenia from Australia to Singapore on 6 July 1858. I was hoping to find someone with this list (or where to find it) so I could check if "Dr. Howard" is John Simpson Howard, and Mary Ann (Sheehan) Howard his wife.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/66009327?searchTerm=Howard&searchLimits=exactPhrase%7C%7C%7CanyWords%7C%7C%7CnotWords%7C%7C%7CrequestHandler%7C%7C%7CdateFrom&fbclid=IwAR2QDpzynZYuFZA_a6FLxSHAgpN9ojkObSm-TQOCpciudIMRwrgYayHtFa0

Does two months for the arrival in Singapore seem excessive? Perhaps stops on the way?

I saw the ship mentioned in an entry "in the harbour" rather than "arrived"
for August 28th, so it may have arrived much earlier and was waiting to for cargo before departing for China. I've not found any passenger list.

Thanks for looking, Maggie. My Dr. (John Simpson) Howard was back in India by August 26, 1858. I was hoping this was him returning with his wife. He had been the Surgeon Superintendent on the Emma Eugenia's 10 Feb 1858 England to Australia voyage.

We know the Emma Eugenia arrived in Fremantle in May 1858, do we know when she sailed from Plymouth? I have 1856 which I doubt can be right. Surely it left late in 1857? I can find all the convict trips in great detail but not this "bride ship"voyage. Thanks, Geoff

Yes, it certainly is. And it is free! I use it all the time. I recently found a picture of my father in a West Australian newspaper in 1941, on his way to war from Sydney (he was captured when Singapore fell in 1942). He mentioned in a letter home about the picture which one of the other soldiers had been sent from home.

I might have looked on Trove for a Fremantle arrival date, but I didn’t really think of it for an English departure date.

Here is the start of that 1858 passenger list of the Emma Eugenia: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSVT-D9ZW-B. You'll find that there are duplicate pages because of the poor quality of the original documents.

I believe that the only possibily for Ellen is on the first page where an you can find an Ellen <?>, 28Y, a nurse selected from Middlesex.
FYI I’m wondering whether she might have fibbed a bit regarding her age. Could she be the same person as the 27Y old Ellen Burns, a nurse living in Paddington, Middlesex in 1851?

My Ellen Byrnes (my great great grandmother) was born 15th May 1945 Holborn, London and was listed in the 1851 census at the Christchurch Workhouses Charles Street Mile End New Town with her elder sister Mary Ann b 1840 and elder brother b 1939. I'm guessing she came on the Emma Eugenia as her death cert shows her arriving 1858. According to "The Immigration of Domestic Servants to
Western Australia in the 1850s and 1890s" by Emily Jayne Chambers this ship brought around 130 single women and girls to be domestic servants for the Swan River Colony.
She married Jeremiah McGrath 1862, James Freeman 1868, John Nelson 1882 and John Bryant 1892 and died in 1910 Carnarvon WA.

many thanks for your help - - I will follow this lead up.

My Ellen Byrnes (my great great grandmother) was born 15th May 1945 Holborn, London
...  She married Jeremiah McGrath 1862, James Freeman 1868, John Nelson 1882 and John Bryant 1892 and died in 1910 Carnarvon WA.

I wonder whether there could be 2 Ellens whose details are being mixed up here:

1
Ellen BURNS (d of James , sgt of Police). She is the widow of (unknown first name) McGRATH and arrives in Jan 1860 from South Australia (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/66007999)
She marries James FREEMAN in 1868 and John Nicolas NELSON in 1882 (see e.g. https://slwa.wa.gov.au/data/wabi/F/F3039.jpg ; http://slwa.wa.gov.au/data/wabi/M/M2769.jpg ; http://slwa.wa.gov.au/data/wabi/N/N0360.jpg )

2.
Ellen BURNES b 1845 Middlesex, who arrives 24 Jun 1862 per the Mary Harrison (pas list: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSVT-D9Z3-Y?i=105).  She could be the Ellen Burns who married Jeremiah McGRATH in 1862.

Yes, I think Tree Spirit may be on a good track there.

If One Ellen Burns/McGrath arrived from South Australia as a widow in 1860, she cannot be the Ellen Burns/McGrath, widow, of Jeremiah McGrath as they did not marry until 1862 in South Australia with his death by accident being in 1865 there.

The Carnarvon death was for Mrs Bryant, who had certainly been at one time, Mrs Freeman.

I recently was contacted by a person in England who advised he was a provisional DNA match of myself. It appears the connection is through Ellen Byrnes b 1845 London and Mary Ann Byrnes b 1840 London.
I am undertaking further DNA testing to confirm. Confirmation would then suggest that Ellen Byrnes /Burns came to Australia in 1858 and given she was a pauper living in a working house in London its likely she came as part of the immigration of domestic servants scheme commenced in the 1850's.

I am glad to hear it was an actual family member.  Often it is not and one likes to think perhaps this helps somewhat with accuracy.
