Title: Downes-Martin
Post by: kingskerswell on Monday 02 February 15 12:03 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I am helping my wife researching a Downs-Martin family for a friend of hers. There was a rumour that the family came from Ireland at one time. I have found a well to do family in the 1901 census in Tipperary http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Borrisnafarney/Killoskehan/1701614/
Can anyone tell me some more about this family? I believe that the lady's husband was or had been Captain Edward Downes-Martin
Regards

Dathai and Aghadowey,
You have both been brilliant as usual and from information which my wife found Edward Downes -Martin was married twice, his first wife having died. All the information you both have found relates either to his first wife and children or to his second wife and children who lived in England.
  Again, Many Thanks

Dathai,
I am overloaded !!! It has just taken me one and a half hours to transcribe the first page of John Martins will, It is going to cost that friend of my wife's a large number of beers to get me to do the other 28 pages. However , now I think that I deserve a glass of wine.
Yet again, to you and Aghadowey many thanks for your efforts all through the afternoon.

Dathai,
Again , many thanks. My wife is now trawling Canadian records looking for the birth of Edward Downes Martin, father John, who appears to have been born in Toronto. So far no luck but most of it is away over my head.

My sons are direct descendants of Edward Downes Martin.  I have quite a lot of information regarding the family including a copy of Edward's baptism, which I would be willing to share if anyone is interested.  I still have gaps including how Edward, as such a young orphan travelled from Canada back to Ireland.  It should be noted that "Downes" was one of Edward's given names and not part of his surname but he adopted it as such some time after his second marriage to Rose Lily Caddick.

I think Kinkerswell must be the husband of the friend helping Julia and if so I would very much like to be in touch.  I do know what you mean about that HUGE will!

I have only just joined rootschat but think I can help you with the family of Downes-Martin.  I have left a message tonight but am not sure if it will be received direct by you, forgive me for my ineptitude!

My sons are direct descendants of Edward and if I can help to fill your gaps I would  be happy to do so, likewise I have some gaps of my own particularly I would  like to know  how Edward got back to Ireland as such a young orphan and how the original John Martin of Belfast got there from Macclesfield, or Pott Shrigley.  One source says that he travelled to America and married there but I am not sure about that.

I'm trying to track Edward G Downes-Martin, 1909-1936. Basically I'm trying to see if either of his parents were born in Ireland. I know there were family links to Tipperary and Shrigley.

Does anyone know? I think the father was born in Canada.

Here is Edward’s grandfather’s marriage in Canada. He is b Ireland.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01smb/

His father, as already stated was born in Canada.
His mother shows as born in England, although I haven’t found her birth. There is a baptism transcription though.
Published trees show Rose Lily’s mother as Eliza Kinmonth b Cork.

If that is correct, he would have two grandparents born in Ireland but not a parent.
