I've noticed that I am not getting any email notifications when responses are made to a topic I've previously replied to. I've checked my profile details and the box is ticked........what have I done?

Have you tried looking in your spam box NJ? I had the same problem a year or so ago and that is what Sarah suggested and there they were. Once I'd marked them as not spam they started appearing again.
If they aren't there, contact Sarah, she'll probably be able to check what is happening and if they are bouncing back.
-
Oh dear......junk mail box empty. I'll contact Sarah, thanks for the advice.

Hi Carol,
Phew.......I am not alone! Yes, it seemd to happen just after Rootschat was down.
Unfortunately I am with TalkTalk, which is not mentioned in the previous post, and after 45 minutes attempting to "live chat with an agent".......4 different agents as it kept disconnecting.....I gave up and sent a private message via their Facebook page. No response yet but that is nothing new.

Finally managed to get to talk to a TalkTalk agent.......who has taken all the details and "the team" will update me in 24-48 hours......
I'm off for a reviving cuppa........ ;D

I am also having the same problem and like you nanny jan checked my profile box and it was ticked ??? ???

I've always wondered, what is the advantage of email notification over simply hitting the 'New Replies' button at the top of the page?

The advantage for me is that I would probably miss new replies to very old posts that I've been interested in without getting an email notification.
You can always disable the email notification for individual posts if they start to be too numerous or if you are no longer interested in the topic.

Hi Rosie,
Sorry I had not spotted your reply, will have a look into yours now.

Sarah :)

New Replies does show all old posts with replies. It is so easy too.

Some people prefer to get an email notification and others would rather look at New Replies. It is a matter of personal choice which option people prefer, neither way is better than the other.
-
I have had several text updates from TalkTalk.......apparently it is all resolved now ( hmn..). Could someone please reply to this so that I can check and let them know?
Thanks,

Yes, that seems quite clear. I can think of two reasons to favor the 'New Replies' button but I never could think of any in favor of email notification. But, whatever.
-
Thanks sami........sadly no notification....... so back to square one :(
Cancel that......Erato's response just arrived....... :D
Nanny Jan
-
So, fingers crossed, it is solved? ;D ;D
-
Well.......your reply has just arrived so.....I think so. I'm still in a state of shock....TalkTalk aren't usually that speedy when dealing with problems. ::)
-
Glad it's sorted for you NJ.
For what it's worth, I turned off my e-mail notifications as soon as I worked out how to (about March 2006!). I'd much rather just look at 'New Replies' and 'Unread Posts' when I come online. I just have e-mail notifications for PMs.

I'm considering that option Gadget; emails are arriving but now marked "Suspected Spam"....... can't win can I? ::)
Nanny Jan
-
I prefer notifications if I'm not logging in regularly, alerts me if I'm busy to make time to look in if need be :)
added ... I usually go to New Replies first up when I do log in though... then sometimes umpteen pages of unread!
I eventually sorted out my lack of notifications some time back but it seems, from this thread and a couple of previous issues by others, it's connected with RC being down for a time, so good that quickly sorted 8)

Hi Jan,
I think that it was an update of your service provider's spam filter that had caused the problem. If the email are coming through still as "suspected spam" it shows that they have still not "whitelisted" your email notifications. I do not know how long they will continue to send "suspected spam" emails if they have not confirmed RootsChat as a safe sender. :-\
Sarah

I was told that TalkTalk do not whitelist (or blacklist) any addresses. Fingers crossed it will be ok.
Nanny Jan
-
I spoke too soon...............back to square one. >:(
-
I am also with talktalk. I don't have email notifications for new replies, as I much prefer to use the 'new replies' button.
However, I am now not receiving email notifications of Personal messages. I have had a few PM's today, but no notifications at all.
It's not of much consequence since a new message shows up in the menu bar towards the top of the page - but I'm just wondering why it's suddenly started occurring.
-
Talktalk maintain ......"nothing to do with us"........ ::)
I too have had problems with PMs.
Having spent more than enough time attempting to deal with TalkTalk (twice yesterday, once today), then Microsoft (chocolate teapot help) I think it's time for yet another reviving brew.................. ::)
-
In fact, the 'My Messages' button is more informative than the 'New Messages' button since you don't even have to click on it to know whether you have something new or not. As far as I have been able to tell, neither button is subject to sporadic failure, unlike the email notification system. The solution to the email problem seems glaringly obvious to me.
-
Hi JenB,
I have just checked your notifications and can see them going out OK.
I think that talktalk have updated their spam filters and are blocking the notifications.
I will send you a pm with some more details.
Regards
Sarah

Hi Sarah my messages have stopped again just had a text from TalkTalk saying we have completed investigations and will provide an update shortly ??? ??? ???
-
Oh dear rosie17.......that's what I had yesterday.....then mail came though marked as "Suspected Spam" (but in my inbox) and now..............no notifications from Rootschat at all. :(
Thought I should warn you. ;)
Nanny Jan
-
We will just have to wait and see what they say.. :(
-
Yes I have just had a text saying we have escalated your fault but need to talk to you and to call them from my mobile which will take about 15 mins ??? ??? Will see what tomorrow brings :D ::)
-
I will send you a pm with some more details.
Thank you Sarah.
As I said in my earlier posting, I only get emails for PM's and it's quite easy to see when one has arrived by looking at the top of the Rootschat page. However I will try to get through talktalk's defences and ask them what they have done.
Thanks again.

That's what I had yesterday but without the "need to talk to you"........
I've been recommended to go with another well known internet/phone provider......but that one is not available in my area. :(
-
I have given up on my provider as I'm not too happy with the help desk....tired of being "In a queue" and waiting on the phone for 20 minutes the first time being 12th and only being down to number 9 after the wait...Not much better the second time...I think I can live without any email notifications as frustrating as it is...I'll get used to reading my messages and looking at "New Replies" to posts ::)
I have done all I can with my settings.

I think I will now turn off notifications, leave it for a few weeks (or when I remember!) and then switch them back again.

"I think I can live without any email notifications"
You will find it so much faster and easier. I always stay logged in to RC and I have Firefox set to resume where it was in the previous session. When I turn on the computer, one click on the Firefox icon restores my previous internet tabs. One of those tabs is the RC forum page. One click there will show me any new replies. You don't even have to click to see if you have any new PMs.
-
I agree entirely with Erato. I gave up on email notifications years ago.
Just periodically click on 'new replies' and there they are.
You know it makes sense ;D
Email notifications for PM's can't be turned off. I am not too worried about not getting them - my main interest is simply to know why they have suddenly stopped.
Edit Wrong - email notifications for PM's can be turned off ::)
-
"Email notifications for PM's can't be turned off."
It can be turned off somehow because I don't get notified. Never have been and never have wanted to be notified.
-

I stand corrected. They can be turned off, and I have just found the place on my profile where I can do so.

This caught my eye because I thought it referred to today. I was without RootsChat for about 10 hours today. Major panic. ;D ;)
It seems to be back on track now, though a thread I posted in many hours ago has had another reply and I have not (yet) received notification of that reply. It may just be me, but I am wondering if there are any known problems?
-
Hello Ruskie,
I was without RootsChat for about 3 hours today.
No panic. ;D ;D ;)

Looking at times on posts, it looks as if it might have been down since about 1am UK time. I had to do some housework instead! :D

That conjures up the picture of Sarah and Trystan hiding behind the sofa while the Leccy Man bangs on the door and peers through the window. ;D
