Hi Again!! I am look into Bettys back ground as part of my ww1 project. Seems she was born Aberdeen 1869 she joined the Swh during ww1 as a nurse, there is also a Netta Learmonth on the list joined at the same time etc, she is born orkney 1894 but lived in Aberdeen also. Can anyone connect the two? Both served at Royaumont Abbey, joined on the same day..

Alan, so this is Betty is 1881 census https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KMDG-B6S
Let me have a look at the actual entry as the index doesn't help. The fact that her birth entry doesn't show on FS, maybe she was born outside of Scotland?
Let's see...

Netta Learmonth...best guesses from me...
Netta can be a variant for www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=netta
Working from that etc., this possible entry for 1901:
Robert Learmonth 38 farm manager b. Stronsay, Orkney
Jamesina Learmonth 38 b. p weatray, Orkney
Robina M Learmonth 17
John Learmonth 16
James Learmonth 14
William R Learmonth 12
Anna C Learmonth 10 b. evie, Orkney
Robert S Learmonth 7
George A Learmonth 5
Caroline S Learmonth 2
Lizzie S Learmonth 8 Months
Address: 2 Thickbigging, Firth, Orkney

Regarding Netta...she travelled to Boston I think, arriving in 30 Dec 1912 on the 'Sicilian', from Glasgow. Mother given as Mary, living at 42 Garden Street, Kirkwall, Orkney.
Maybe/likely 1901 census is wrong. Mary was Elizabeth/Betty's mum :-\ NOT sure on connections overall really so far...
Second page to this manifest. Mentions an Alec Learmonth I think. A bit jumbled that section.

There is a Gannetta born in Orkney in 1894 but i cant find a link between them. Must have been as they both joined at the same time. LEARMONTH Miss Betty, Nurse Royaumont 1-Sep-17 18-Dec-18
LEARMONTH Miss Netta, Orderly Royaumont 21-Sep-17 20-Mar-18

Donald Horne Learmonth b 9 Mar 1856 married Rose Anna Manuel Houston b 1855 at Leith in 1885. They had children as follows
David Houston Learmonth b 1886, Stronsay, Orkney
Lizzie Rose Learmonth (known as Betty) b 1887 Stronsay, Orkney
Robert Learmonth b 1889 Stronsay, Orkney
Donald James Learmonth b 1890 Stronsay, Orkney
Lorenz Alexander Learmonth b 1892 Stronsay, Orkney
Janetta Anna Rose Learmonth b 1894 b Upper Scapa, Kirkwall
This confirms that Betty and Janetta were indeed sisters. As one other poster confirmed Netta emigrated to Boston in 1912. She married Fred Campbell. Not sure either regarding to comment on the following page to Alec Learmonth. Betty died in 1983 unmarried.
The family were living in Aberdeen at the time of the 1901 Census (168 Mid Stocket Road, St Machar, Aberdeen) but her father died in 1904 whilst trying to cross a fast flowing river in The Transvaal.
