Title: CHARLTON - Harrold and Felmersham
Post by: Petros on Friday 13 February 15 17:23 GMT (UK)
Samuel CHARLTON married Mary Jeffreys at Kempston on 21 Sep 1784 with them both buried there in April 1792

His parents appear to have been William Charlton & Judith SWANNELL who married at Felmersham 30 Jan 1759
Samuel was baptised at Harrold 22 Sep 1760.  A Samuel CHAULTON was buried there 1 April 1760 while a JUDITH CHALTON was buried Felmersham 22 May 1770

Any insights or comments welcome

Just popped across road to Kempston library to checkout Kempston PR transcript..

The marriage was by licence David, most likely as she was a minor.... Mary, daughter of Thomas & Ann Jeffries, shopkeeper baptised 5 Oct 1767 (born 28 Sept) so she'd be just 17!

The 1792 burials are....
1 Apr 1792 Mary, daughter of Samuel & Mary Charlton
9 Apr 1792 Samuel Charlton **

... however cannot find baptism of daughter Mary, but have got...
4 Nov 1785 William born 11 June --- & buried 10 Mar 1786
14 Nov 1786 William born 17 Oct
11 Nov 1787 Ann born 19 Sept

.... + marriage on 23 Aug 1792 Charles Mardlin to Mary Charlton, widow, by licence

Then Mary Mardling was buried 5 Apr 1800

Cheers John

PS ** Beds Archives have Admon for Samuel Charlton, yeoman ref A 1792/5

Thanks John & David

The answers highlight how the registers often show things that are omitted from the transcripts (NBI & IGI)

The final I of IGI and NBI show what they are - Indexes and as such are inevitably missing details that can only be found in the parish register. Even the PR transcripts that John and I have referred to don't include all of the detail - for example marriage witnesses aren't recorded, for which you have to refer to the microfilm.

Samuel Charton baptised Harrold 22 Sep 1760, son of William & Judith Charlton, Farmer

Samuel Chaulton, buried Harrold 1 Apr 1760, farmer - his admon record A 1760/14 is at Beds Archives.

Judith Charlton buried Felmersham 22 May 1770 is widow - she has a will registry record R 1770/32 at Beds Archives. Her burial plot in Felmersham churchard says she's age 35 and wife of William and is buried near to William & Martha Swannell. So if she's a widow then is husband William, the William Charlton, farmer who is buried at Carlton on 1 Mar 1767 - & his will ref 1767/50 is also at Beds Archives

(**) Mr William Bithrey of Carlton married Judith Charlton by licence at Harrold on 2 Jan 1755. Mr Wm Bithrey gentleman of Radwell, Felmersham buried at Carlton on 19/9/1777, his will ref 1779/12, Wife/widow Judith buried Carlton on 30/7/1786.

Samuel CHARLTON married Mary Jeffreys at Kempston on 21 Sep 1784 with them both buried there in April 1792.
His parents appear to have been William Charlton & Judith SWANNELL who married at Felmersham 30 Jan 1759. Samuel was baptised at Harrold 22 Sep 1760.

Hello.... What proof if any, or any other circumstantial evidence, have you got that Samuel Charlton who married at Kempston in 1784 is the Samuel baptised at Harrold in 1760. Is it just that he's the best fit based on his age.

Back to the marriage which was by licence, the transcript for which dated 17 Sept 1784 is for Samuel Charlton, wheelwright of Kempston age 21+ to marry Mary Jeffries, daughter of Thomas, minor.......surety given by Thomas Jeffries, grocer of Kempston.

Interesting to note that soon after Samuel died in Apr 1792 widow Mary married Charles Mardling again by licence; which states that he too was a whhelwright of Kempston, surety again by Thomas Jeffries, shopkeeper.

This leads me to a record from Beds Archives ref BC204 dated 5 May 1790 regarding a 21 year lease of messuage & arable fields in Marston & Wootton, assigned from Henry Charlton, yeoman of Wollaston, Northants and Samuel Charlton, wheelwright of Kempston to James Cook, shepherd of Kempston.

Another Archives record ref PUBZ3/1/118 dated 24 Oct 1780 is regarding William Rutter of St Pauls Bedford, son of Thomas Rutter, being a bound apprentice to Samuel Chaulton, wheelwright of Kempston for 7 years. However after 5yrs 6mths Chaulton died (April 1792)

It'd be good to check Wollaston record to see if there's a link between Henry & Samuel.

Cheers John

John

I said assumed because that was the only baptism I could find in the right age range in Beds. However, I have noticed that not all sources equate CHARLTON with spellings such as CHALTON so I shall dig further.

The Henry CHARLTON referred is presumably the elder of 2 sons of Sam CHARLTON baptised at Wollaston (Henry 1772, John 1775) (Freereg).
There is a baptism of Samuel son of Samuel at Easton Maudit, NTH in 1765 but he would (probably) not been of age in 1784! But no other baptism

Its fascinating trying to sort out the connection (or not)

and two marriages by license at Northampton St Mary of CHARLTONs from Harrold!
25 May 1721 Samuel CHARLTON to Judith MARSHALL of Kingsthorpe (but born Carlton)
14 July 1737 Samuel CHARLTON to Rose Granborough of Brafield on the Green

apparently both of the same Samuel (son of Samuel of Wootton according to BLARS c523)
Title: Re: CHARLTON - Harrold and Felmersham
Post by: johnP-bedford on Monday 23 February 15 12:28 GMT (UK)
Hello Peter

Does it say that Samuel Charlton was a widower on his marriage to Rose ?

However it all seems feasible...

4/2/1708-9 Mary, wife of Samuel Charlton (senior) buried Harrold
25/5/1721 Samuel Charlton married Judith Marshall
16/1/1723-24 "Marchal of" Samuel & Judith Charlton baptised Harrold
7/5/1726 un-named son of Samuel & Judith Charlton buried at Carlton
6/8/1733 Judith, wife Samuel Charlton of Harrold buried at Carlton
19/3/1735 Samuel Charlton, senior buried Harrold
14/7/1737 Samuel Charlton married Rose Granborough
20/3/1746-7 Rose, wife of Samuel Charlton, farmer buried Harrold
1/4/1760 Samuel Chaulton, farmer buried Harrold (Admon A 1760/14)

The BLARS document VC526 dated 1745 states Michael, son & heir of Samuel Charlton & Rose his wife.... is he Marchal/Marshall? mentioned in BLARS doc X825/3 dated Dec 1763 eldest son and heir of Samuel Charlton late of Harrold, yeoman and Judith his wife. I've not fould death/burial of Michael Charlton but Marshall Chalton, husbandman is buried Goldington on 25/11/1770 (Admon A 1771/13)
Title: Re: CHARLTON - Harrold and Felmersham

John

I haven't been able to check the license re Samuel's status on his marriage to Rose but it makes more sense of the 1745 reference for Rose to Samuel's wife than the wife of a 21 year old Marshall.

Samuel's children
16/1/1723-24 "Marchal of" Samuel & Judith Charlton baptised Harrold and buried Goldington 25 Nov 1770
7/5/1726 un-named son of Samuel & Judith Charlton buried at Carlton

and presumably also
ca 1730 William Charlton buried Carlton 1/3/1767 (married to Judith SWANNELL 30/1/1759)
ca 1730 Judith Charlton married William Bitherey at Harrold 2 Jan 1755 by license

A mortgage of 7/12/1763 document refers to Marshall Charlton (eldest son and heir of Samuel Charlton late of Harrold, yeoman and Judith his wife)
but makes no mention of any other (living) sons (e.g. William)
Title: Re: CHARLTON - Harrold and Felmersham

There's 2 BLARS reference L7/93 & GA 1055 dated 1762 that relates to Dungey farmhouse in Harrold...late occupied by Marshall Charlton & William Charlton.... could this be where the family lived with father Samuel who was buried 1 Apr 1760

Therefore.... William is also son of Samuel, but younger than Marshall.... and they had sister Judith (named after her mother) & married to William's "brother" William Bithray in 1755

thanks I hadn't managed to find those two references.
Any thoughts on why the baptisms of William & Judith can't be found? Are some of the likely registers
damaged in places?

There is no mention of missing pages in the transcript of Harrold & Carlton baptisms for that period.

Snippet from the 'Diary of Benjamin Rogers, Rector of Carlton'
31 Dec 1734.... I returned home this morning and Mr Charlton seeing me as I came through his close, he paid me for breaking up the ground in my churchyard for burying his wife & child, 6s 8d each.

If this is Samuel Charlton, then is this wife Judith buried Aug 1733...  there is no mention of a child baptised or buried then, unless it refers to the un-named son buried May 1726?

The uncertainties remain about how Samuel CHARLTON ended up a wheelwright in Kempston

What became of the sons of William Charlton & Judith Swannell after their parents died?
What is the connection with Henry Charlton of Wollaston?
Was Samuel apprenticed and if so where?

PS ** Beds Archives have Admon for Samuel Charlton, yeoman of Kempston.  ref A 1792/5

The Admon states that.... we Mary Charlton of Kempston, widow & Thomas Jeffereys of Kempston, shopkeeper... swear unto officials that Mary is relict & next of kin of Samuel Charlton... 17 Aug 1792
Title: Re: CHARLTON - Harrold and Felmersham

...............but Marshall Chalton, husbandman is buried Goldington on 25/11/1770 (Beds Archives hav e his Admon A 1771/13 )

Admon dated 18 May 1771....... We Thomas Charlton of Carlton, gentleman; William Bithrey, yeoman of Carlton & Thomas Swannell, yeoman of Felmersham - swear unto officials & alledged that they are brother & for the Sisters of Marshall Charleton & are his next of kin....

** so Marshall also had this brother Thomas and we know that his sister Judith married William Bithrey & his brother William married Judith, daughter of Thomas Swannell.

William Bithrey was joint trustee to William Charlton's 1767 will for benefit of children William & Samuel Charlton until they reach age 21. Likewise Thomas Swannel was joint trustee to Judith Charlton's 1770 will for benefit of same two children until they reach age 21. Samuel would reach 21 in 1781 & William in 1786.

Not having found a burial for Thomas Charlton I'm taking a punt & say he's the Thomas CHAWTON of Carlton who is buried at Colmworth on 4 Apr 1782

That reference to Thomas is useful since no record other than that (mispelt?) burial record appears to relate to him

Going back before 1707
we have Samuel is a yeoman of Harrold son of John Chaulton gent of Tilbrook (buried there 26 March 1711) [ref WE1326 1714]
baptised at Bolnhurst 10 Oct 1667 married to Mary Birt (C522) buried Harrold 19 march 1736

They had three sons baptised at Wotton in 1696, 1699 and 1702 no first names listed.
Samuel was apparently the eldest - a 1745 mortgage (C523) describes him as son & heir apparent of Samuel Charlton of Wootton, deceased

John
thank you again for looking those wills out.

These make it clear that the Bolnhurst baptism isn't related and also provide the first mention of some other Christian names.

From these two wills we can identify

John Chalton & Ann

Children:
1.   Samuel Chalton married to Mary Birt (see C522)
Samuel had 3 (unnamed!) sons baptised at Wotton 1696, 1699, 1702
2.   Elizabeth Chalton (bap 5 June 1660 Kempston) married to _ Hartwell
3.   John Chalton (Bap 21 July 1661 Kempston) married to ?

Grandchildren
1.   Daniel son of Samuel
2.   Mary
3.   Sarah
4.   James
5.   Samuel son of Samuel
6.   Benjamin
7.   Elizabeth dau of John

perhaps Daniel is the connection to Wollaston?  There were 9 children baptised there to parents Dan & Judith from 1728/1729 to 1749

John Chalton & Ann
Children:
1.   Samuel Chalton married to Mary Birt (see C522)
Samuel had 3 (unnamed!) sons baptised at Wotton 1696, 1699, 1702
2.   Elizabeth Chalton (bap 5 June 1660 Kempston) married to _ Hartwell
3.   John Chalton (Bap 21 July 1661 Kempston) married to ?

Regarding Elizabeth suggest she's married to Matthew Hartwell who is joint executor of John Chalton's will of 1710/11 as he's son-in-law; and is of Cranfield as per Blars ref WE1326 dated 1714

How about.....
Wootton marriage 11 May 1687 Thomas Woodward of Gt Brickhill Bucks to Elizabeth Chaulton

Then from Phillimores Bucks Marriages....
At Soulbury on 26 Oct 1702 Matthew Hartwell to Elizabeth Woodward of Brickhill...
...although it don't say she's a widow plus haven't found burial of Thomas?

Plus John's will leaves £5 apiece to Thomas Woodward & Sarah Woodward - his grandchildren via Elizabeth's marriage to Thomas Woodward.

Regarding son John there is a burial at Kempston on 9 Aug 1690 Sarah wife of John Chaulton of Wootton... so when did John marry Sarah who?

1784 Poll
Marston   Samuel Charlton    abode Kempston                   note widow Ginn
Marston   Daniel Charlton      abode Wollaston, Northants    note widow Gin

Regarding the above poll that took place 7th-19th Apr 1784 before Samuel Charlton, wheelwright & yeoman of Kempston married Mary Jeffreys on 21 Sept that year. Both Samuel & Daniel were allowed to vote as they were joint owners of a property in Marston occupied by widow Ginn. That same Samuel, as per Beds Archives ref BC204 dated 5 May 1790 along with Henry Chalton yeoman of Wollaston, Northants assigned a 21 year lease of messuage with close of 9 acres plus 12 acres of arable fields in Marston & Wootton to James Cook, shepherd of Kempston.

Another Beds Archives ref RH2/11 dated 10 Mar 1790 (before lease assigned) is regarding a messuage in Upper Shelton in Wootton (although its a hamet of Marston Moretaine) late in occupation of Thomas Ginn, grocer & now by William Busby. This Thomas Ginn, grocer buried at Wootton on 19 Aug 1788, son of Thomas Ginn, cordwainer buried 19 Sep 1767 & wife Sarah Ginn buried 30 Sept 1788. So Sarah, is the widow Ginn who occupied Samuel & Daniel Charlton's property in 1784.

Next I reckon Daniel Charlton yeoman of Wollaston was buried there on 25 Dec 1786 & his ownership of property passed down to his son Henry born 12/12/1745 (baptised 11/6/1748) thus that's why his name is assigning the lease in 1790. As per Rushden Heritage website Northants record office holds the will of Daniel ref 1786 13 Mar, along with wills for Henry 1796 & Samuel 1805 - might be worth a visit.

What's interesting is the 1710-11 will of John Chalton of Tilbrook .....leaves to son Samuel Chalton, heirs & assigns, the cottage & land in Marston & Wootton.... and ....to my grandson Daniel Chalton, son of Samuel Chalton, the cottage & land in Marston & Wootton...

John

Thanks that archives entry clarifies the poll book reference.

It seems slightly curious that the later reference is to Henry of Wollaston, who had at least one older brother (Samuel) still alive at his father's death. Doubtless Daniel's will would clarify the reason.
Daniel would seem to have been the eldest son of Samuel & Mary Birt since his grandfather's will makes no reference to him receiving anything when he reaches 21 in contrast to his siblings/cousins.

The other wills of interest, presumably in the Beds archives, are those of Samuel father and son who died in 1730 and 1760

Great - that explains why there's no will for him at Beds Archives. Are you going to get the details? He'd be the one from the 1734 Poll with the property in Marston & is the SC senior buried at Harrold on 19 Mar 1735-36.

** later... There is no will for son Samuel who's buried 1 Apr 1760, he died intestate as there is an Admon dated 29/4/1760 where Marshall Chaulton & William Chaulton & John Nealy confirmed who he was, most likely to make a claim against his estate.

Samuel Chalton the elder married Mary Birt/Burt but I have not found a marriage but I've narrowed it down to around 1690. Mary was daughter of Daniel & Mary Burt, she was baptised Luton 29 Apr 1670 as per LDS. Blars ref C522 dated 1691 mentions Samual Chaulton of Wootton, yeoman & wife Mary, daughter & heir of Daniel Burt. Another ref C521 dated 1688-89 relates to probate of his will leaving stuff to wife (Mary) & rest to daughter Mary (although does mention she's wife of Samuel). Another ref AD835 dated 1690 relates to farm at Stopsley Mary Birt & daughter Mary Birt (again not married?)

There is a will for Danial Burt, gent of Cowridge End, Luton ref 1689/66  he was buried 14 Mar 1688/89

The 1736 will of Samuel Charlton names his eldest son Samuel, of Harrold, and his youngest Daniel, of Wollaston, as his executors. Dated 15 October 1735

To Samuel his heirs and assignees receive tenements, arable land and premises in Stopsley and Cowbridge (Luton)
To Daniel his heirs and assignees cottage, tenements, and arable land in Marston
various other bequests split between them

To sister (Elizabeth) Hartwell of Cranfield £5
To kinswoman Sarah, wife of Robert Wills of Newport Pagnell, £5
To my son (in law) and daughter Thomas Blotfod (?) and Mary Blotfod 1s apiece
And a request to be buried in Harrold churchyard

That ties things together nicely and shows the problems of people meandering around 3 adjoining counties even within a small area!

John

thanks, a lot to digest now and a more substantial tree. If only it were so straightforward for Ann Charlton's husband!

one more snippet.... in David Hall's book on Wollaston village published in 1977.... it has the Inclosure map & details for 1787-1790 & says some people known as yeoman prior to 1787 owned almost no land at all including Henry & Samuel Charlton. However the book does list Henry Charlton owner occupier with c0.4 acres & 2 cow commons & 15 sheep commons and Samuel Charlton owner occupier of zero acres & 4 cow commons & 12 sheep commons while he had another property tenanted by John Neal.

I suspect these were brothers, sons of Daniel & Judith Charlton, Henry born 1745 & Samuel born 1734. Their other brother Daniel born 1736 but I've not found baptism of spinster sister Mary.

Mary's will provides a clue as to why her brother Daniel (1736) doesn't feature in the Wollaston PRs. Assuming he remained in Stafford after she wrote it, it would seem that he belatedly married there and was buried there. Both at Stafford St Mary

married to Mary Barnit 17 March 1793 and buried there 17 Jan 1803

Mary was buried 3 May 1812 and there is a PCC will for her but not Daniel

The only relevant reference in Staffs Archives online catalogue relates to the surrendering of a mortgage in 1799
