Hi
William Halbert married Alison Potts on 21 August 1863 in Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland. Both were listed as 'of this parish'. Witnesses were Adam Telfer and John Archison.
William was born about 1742 (Im presuming in Scotland) and died on 13 Dec 1803 in Newcastle upon Tyne in England.
Alison was born about 1743 (Im presuming in Scotland) and died on 28 December 1814 in Newcastle upon Tyne in England.
Their first of many children was born about 1766 in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Is anyone able to point me in the right direction to find who William and Alisons parents were?
Ive found a record of a John Potts marrying Isabel Steele on 14 May 1731 in Kelso and then Margaret Williamson on 31 Jan 1835 in Kelso but have not been able to link these people as Alisons parents. The Potts name itself seems to be quite common.

See below she is the only Alison in the OPR and it makes sense given the proximity to Kelso.
13/11/1743 POTTS ALISON JOHN POTTS/ F COLDSTREAM /BERWICK 733/00 0010 0138
For Halbert there is only these two from 1735-1750, this is not a Berwick name during this period.
07/07/1734 HALBERT WILLIAM WILLIAM HALBERT/ M MAUCHLINE /AYR 604/00 0010 0160
17/07/1743 HALBERT WILLIAM GEORGE HALBERT/ELSPITH MCNAUGHT FR44 (FR44) M COYLTON /AYR 583/00 0010 0032
Of course there could be many more in lost records.

Hi Don
Thank you for that.
Do Scottish records suffer the same problem as thier Irish counterparts - largely destroyed or are they just a product of poor record keeping?
The first born male we can find to William and Alison is William Halbert followed by John Potts Halbert then George, Joseph and Robert.
Distance wise Ayr isnt that far from Kelso. If we take into account he lack of good roads it may have been a days journey in the 1760s. Still I may be clutching at things that dont necessarily link.

The only William Halbert I can find in Scotland is the one above, however there were a number in England and Kelso is in the Scottish Borders.

Scottish Records are generally very good but the further you go back you start seeing gaps in various Parishes for a variety of reasons. You can see what's available here:

Thank you
It would make it quite difficult if William Halbert was born in England and then moved to Scotland where he got married.

Hi Colin
How do you refine by Scottish border towns. Ive had a look through the films suggested above for Coldstream and Kelso and there are 0 Halberts except when William got married.
