Title: Garner/Tyrer Marriage Question
Post by: stapler40 on Wednesday 18 February 15 14:11 GMT (UK)
Hello>

I've got something of a mystery here, I hope you can help me find out the answers. I seeking information concerning the following marriages:

1. 1946, Liverpool..George Stanley Garner, son of Norman and Eleanor, marries Joan Tyrer.

2. 24 April 1954, Toronto Canada..George Stanley Garner marries Nora Roberta Tryer.

I have documents that show George was born 22/5/27 in Liverpool. Nora Tyrer was born 9/6/24 in Liverpool. The index of marriages shows a marriage between G.S. Garner and Joan Tyrer, June 1946. This marriage produced two children, Stanley born Liverpool 1947 and Linda J, born Liverpool 1948. I can locate Stanley traveling with his grandparents to America in 1953, so I am presuming that Linda has passed away ( or perhaps as a result of a divorce the children were split between the parents with Stanley going to his father and Linda to his mother).

There is a passenger record for George Stanley's parents, Norman and Eleanor, traveling with 6 year old Stanley, in 1953 to New York.

My question is whether Joan and Nora Roberta Tyrer are related. Can it just be simply that George Married two women, both born in Liverpool, named Tyrer. And what became of Joan Garner nee Tyrer and Linda J. Garner.

Any help is appreciated.

Before we start looking, can you confirm that all the people mentioned are now deceased?

I'm not sure about the 1924 birth date for Nora - there's a birth for a Nora R Tyrer registered Q4 1927, and this baptism

30 Sep 1927 St John the Evangelist, Knotty Ash, Lancashire, England
Nora Roberta Tyrer - [Child] of Thomas Tyrer & Mary Maria
   Abode: 38 Belfast Rd.
    Occupation: Labourer
    Baptised by: Frank J. Powell

Do you have a birth date for Joan?

I have sent you a pm in case one is still living.
The second marriage certificate would hopefully show fathers names.

Stanley came back from Canada  with Elenor and an aunt in December 1954. I can;t see the aunt going out before then, but she and Elenor (whose citizenship is listed as Uk Canada) go out again in 1956

Thank you for all the responses, they have helped greatly.

I can confirm that George Stanley Garner and Nora Roberta Garner have passed. As for Joan Garner nee Tyrer, I have no information other than the marriage to George Stanley.
I am confused as to the identification of the parents of Joan and Nora Roberta. On the 1946 marriage index Joan is identified as either Joan Tyrer or Joan Horrocks.
There is a marriage, date 1931, between an Arthur Tyrer and a Margaret Horrocks, but that would be way after any of these two ladies, Joan and Nora Roberta was born. So where do Horrocks play into this. There is a index for a marriage between John Tyrer and Margaret J Jones, Dec 1924 Liverpool.
So it would appear that George married the sisters, first Joan, in 1946 and then Nora Roberta, in 1952, in Toronto. Are divorces indexed for England. When did George Stanley go to Canada. What happened to the child Linda J.

Again, thanks.

I'm pretty sure they're not sisters - see Nora's baptism above where her father is Thomas and her mother is Mary Maria (fairly sure nee Jones)

The Tyrer/Horrocks marriage seems a possible - If it is them Joan may have been born Horrocks but may have also used her stepfather's surname

If you purchase the 1946 marriage certificate - only from GRO to avoid additional costs - then it will detail why Joan is classed as both Tyrer and Horrocks.   ;D ;D  My interpretation is that Joan's surname is one name and her father's name is the other.

Joan and Nora Tyrer were not related. It was just a coincidence they both had the same surname. George Stanley took Stanley, who was born in 1947, to America with him and Linda, who was born in 1948, was put up for adoption. I was born in 1945 and Joan Tyrer was my mother.  I found both Stan and Linda some 20 odd years ago and we all keep in regular contact, in fact we all met up only a couple of weeks ago. Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries.

Welcome to Rootschat, Cornishgran,
I order to exchange personal messages (which are not visible to everyone else), you need to make three posts first. You've already made one, so just answer this saying 'Okay' or something and then write one more. Then you can contact your family connections and give info about living people too, which is otherwise not allowed on this forum.
Best wishes,
Joney
