Title: KENDAL R O? - House search-DUFTON
Post by: willgen on Saturday 21 February 15 10:49 GMT (UK)
I would like to find the 'House,Shop & Croft' built in 1882-83 in DUFTON, by my G.Grandfather James DALTON. Is it possible that there are records ie rates, maps that could give this information?
The property was sold by his widow Jane DALTON in 1892 before she &  her younger children emigrated to Canada.
Property sale 15 March 1892 - George THOMAS, solicitor, Appleby acting for vendor.
H'hold & business equipment/stock sale 22 June 1892 by RICHARDSON & CO,Accountants, Appleby.
I don't expect anyone to have time to 'look up' for me but an enquiry at the Record Office as to whether they have records that may hold the information would be helpful.

Hi Rosie

Did try contact by snail mail (some time back) but didn't get a very positive response. Thought if someone was actually 'on site' they may be more helpful?

However will try again as you suggest. You never know I might strike lucky!

PROB/1884/W52

This is the reference to the will of James Dalton, grocer and general dealer of Dufton who died in 1884. The will is housed at Carlisle Archive Centre. Ask if you want a look-up on this.

Hi Willgen

It would be worth getting in touch with the following website:

http://www.duftonvillage.info/page7.html

There is bound to be a local historian who has carried out research of the village, and would possibly be able to name the property you mention. I would have thought there will be some old photographs of the village somewhere also.

I have searched various Directories online (Kelly’s etc) but they are not giving the information you want.

You possibly have this already:

Dalton (E). In memory of James Dalton of Dufton who died December 30th 1883 aged 42 years. Also Elizabeth Ann his daughter who died December 2nd 1884 aged 21 years. Amy his daughter who died in infancy.

Hi Jean
Thanks for your input. I will try the website you recommend. Have made enquiries a few years ago as I thought the most likely property was the present shop + next door house (the properties used to be together but are now split). They do look about the right age, however, no luck.

Hi again

If all else fails, it would be worth sending a letter to the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald, King Street, Penrith and asking about the property.

Quite a few researchers have their letters printed in the weekly newspaper which has good distribution throughout the old Cumberland and Westmorland and especially around the Dufton area and I believe the response is usually good.

Hi Jean
Thanks for that! I will have a go in the paper. Have sent an e-mail to Dufton - as yet, no response.
