Title: Anyone interested in Saunders family members originally from Uffington Berkshire
Post by: Regorian on Saturday 28 February 15 14:21 GMT (UK)
My grandmother was a Saunders from Uffington Berkshire (now Oxon). I have some documentation and photographs. I was told 2 Anzacs would go on leave from Western Front to Uffington. Another female Saunders married (Sir) John Garling Hurley.

I'm not getting any younger, I would like to pass on information at least before it and myself get thrown in a skip ::).

If nobody is interested maybe the Museum at Uffington might like them. They do have the Parish registers [transcribed] and the school log book amongst other things relating to family history of the people of Uffington. ; http://www.museum.uffington.net/

You would think so Youngtug, but not so. I e-mailed Uffington Museum a couple of years ago. I did not even receive the courtesy of a reply. I'm not looking for anything, I have documentation and photographs to offer. I'm not getting any younger and would rather pass on the information before it is too late.

I have spoken to old women from Uffington in the past who had memories from the first 20 years of the twentieth century. It was actually a letter from a Swindon firm of solicitors to my father in 1959 saying that he was a beneficiary under someones will that initiated my interest in family history.

Uffington is an interesting place, John Browns Schooldays etc. John Betjeman lived there 1934 to 1945 I think. Next door to my 'great aunt Queenie'. I used to take my mother up there to visit in the 80's. JB's daughter co authored an illustrated book on English country cottages. Their example for Oxon was JB's and Queenies cottages.

I went to the museum in the old schoolhouse last year and the person in charge at the time was very helpful and interested in genealogy but I think it is run by volunteers.

You could try Berkshire Records Office as they hold the original registers for the area.  If they're not interested, you may have more luck with the Society of Genealogists in London - http://www.sog.org.uk/.  Their library does keep collections of documents as well as genealogies, so I would imagine they would be interested.

Thanks very much for the replies. As intimated, I'm not looking for anything, merely to pass on what I have before I pass on.

A lady in Australia (descendant of a Saunders) put a request on GenesReunited about 2 years ago. I have written something and sent her a PM, but no reactions. Hence putting something on here under Australia.

I would suggest you approach the Berkshire and Oxfordshire Family History Societies.  The former has a search room which is next door to the Berkshire Record Office where they have a number of family histories available.

My own Saunders family comes from the Thame area and they are a little distant from Uffington

Thanks very much for your reply, but as I said before (X2), I'm in the market for giving, not receiving ;). It's a pity because she knows who she is descended from. Two of them from her branch were ANZACS in WWI. They must have survived Gallipoli as they were then on the Western Front and went on leave to Uffington. I was told this in the early 80's by EMVA (Queenie) Weaver (Saunders)(c1900 - c2000), She and a couple of teenage sisters were no doubt enthralled by fit young Australians in uniform and slouch hats ::).

Now, Thame is not a million miles away. I wonder if your Saunders have anything to do with mine.

Anthony Saunders (1828 - 1899) was my grandmothers father. Anthony had two sisters, Mary Elizabeth (marr. Henry Raven) and Jane marr. Mr Lovett of Cricklade.

Hi,

Maybe the Australian War Memorial would be interested in the documents and photos, try an email to them.

Hi Regorian

Do you have any further information/clues in the documents that you have?

The National Archives (Australia) has digitised service records for almost all Australian WW1 soldiers.  Unfortunately, there are literally hundreds with the surname SAUNDERS - and, of course, this may not even have been the surname of these soldiers.

I've had a quick look at the list and cannot see any enlisted men born in Berks or Oxon - and again, we don't know if they had been born in England or anywhere else.

You may care to have a look at the site -
http://www.naa.gov.au/
Go to the Search the collection link and put in the surname and the dates 1914 to 1918.

Not much help, I'm afraid, unless you can give us some more information.

Judith

Hi Judith,

Thank you very much for your kind efforts. As I said earlier, I'm not looking for anything.

To reiterate, I picked up a request from an Australian lady on GenesReunited dated 2013 for information about Saunders family of Uffington. I posted my ability to help. No contact so sent a PM. No reply although she must still be a paid up member. So, put down a scent here hoping she may be a Rootschatter.

She will know her Australian history, it only goes back to 1872 when two Saunders brothers emigrated to Australia on a sailing ship from Uffington. I can give her quite a bit of Uffington end docs. and pics. on whole Saunders family.

I'd better put Completed on this so that no more generous souls waste their time.

Don't be too quick to put "completed" on.  The Aussie R'chat board has been know to solve some almost impossible searches.  And, in any case, leaving it up for a few days may alert the person you are trying to contact.  Cheers, Judith

I am fairly certain that we have no 19th century connection as I have a fairly complete tree of my Saunders from Richard Wells Saunders who was born in Tetsworth in 1789 and moved to Thame by the time of his marriage to Mary Woolhouse in 1816.  I can go back in Tetsworth for a few generations.  The Woolhouse name is used as a second Christian name for many generations.

The lady has replied through GenesReunited this morning. Apparently, she still has very little knowledge of her Uffington Saunders roots. She said she was on Ancestry and perhaps someone from there and here alerted her to my messages. So, big thanks are due to you.

She sent a photo of the thatched cottage in the 30's with people outside. I remember two of them in 1953, I was only ten at the time. I can send her photos of what it looks like now, identical but in better condition.

Hi
I just found your post and may be able to help. John Garling Hurley (his mother was Annie Elizabeth Garling) married Alice Edith Saunders. John Garling Hurley is a relation of mine. Interestingly we just held the 200 year anniversary of the arrival of the "Garling" family to Australia. There were some 150 relatives that came including descendants of John and Alice Hurley. If you want I can contact them and tell them of your offer and then put you in contact.
Let me know if that is suitable.
Cheers
Sally

Hello Sally,

Thank you very much for your message. Saunders family is peripheral to my life and death struggle with my paternal line. Interest is through my grandmother, Florence Saunders 1878 - 1953. She was half sister to John Saunders 1859 - 1931. Their father was Anthony Saunders 1828 - 1899, John's  mother Mary Fuller 1831 - c1866, my grandmothers mother Lydia Saunders(Franklyn) 1840 - 1931.

I have had some correspondence with 'K' (you probably know her) in Australia this year, exchange of information and photographs. She sent me a photograph of John Saunders in uniform of the New South Wales Mounted Police 1890's. If you look up NSW Mounted Police website I'm pretty sure the only historical Photo is of John Saunders but a couple of years before.

I hope I am not too late to beg for copies of your Saunders info. My Mum is a Saunders from Uffington area, and I am currently working on a history of the family - since time began, or so it seems!  I am also doing a write-up for Tom Brown's Museum, as some of the info that they have with regard to the founder, Thomas Saunders, is incorrect. I would love your information if you are still prepared to share. I am from Cardiff, but live in Canada for half the year.
I do have a lot of information from wills, etc for the Saunders in Uffington/Wolstone/ashbury area, since they first arrived in the Shire if anyone is interested in connecting with me.

Just as well I did not mark this Thread 'closed'. Canton contacted me yesterday and it's opened the whole matter up. The limit of my researches was Anthony Saunders 1828 -1899. Apparently my line through my grandmother goes back to Richard Saunders born 1724. My central heating died on Friday and I am confined to a box room with a small electric blower heater where my computer is. When I can get all the Saunders stuff out on the dining room table, the matter can be carried further.

Hi, the two Saunders gents you refer to who may have visited England during WWI were my grandfather (John - d 1931) and his brother - 2 of the 3 sons of John Saunders, the above mentioned police superintendent of Goldburn. I would be very grateful for more photos or information (we also have some to share, too.

Hello Diney,

Very pleasant to connect. I expect you know Kathy, who sent me a Tree and pics.

The young men who were in the Great War visited the family in Uffington, Berks, now Oxfordshire, when on leave. John Hurley, later Sir John Hurley visited my grandmother in Slough in the 30's. He must have lived there for a while as management at Berlei, Slough. A modern facory and offices, which is still there as far as I know.

We will have to go to e-mails soon, so I can send you pics. and attachments.

Thank you for getting in touch.

Roger

Added: exchange of e-mail addresses by private message, not on here.

My grandmother, Florence Saunders (1878 - 1953) was half sister to John Saunders, same fathers, different mothers.

How lovely to see such good results for Regorian's kind offer  :)

Just butting in here to help Diney  to send a pm (personal message).

Diney, just click on the circle with a letter/page in it under Regorian's photo and this will open a new window into which you can type a private/personal message containing your e-mail.

Hi Regorian,

I stumbled upon this site. Researching my family history of Saunders from Uffington. Your grandmother, Florence Saunders, I believe was the sister of my great grandfather, Richard Saunders. His parents were Anthony Saunders(1828-1899) and Lydia Franklin. My grandfather, who is also Richard Saunders, was first cousins with Queenie Weaver. She lived in Pear Tree Cottage. I think we may be related!

Hello and welcome. We most certainly are. Lydia spent her last years with Richard, possibly Devizes. Unless you've already done it, I can send you a Tree. There are Australian relatives too.

If you PM me with your e-mail address, I will send it.

Roger

Added: No not Devizes, Faringdon District so probably Uffington.

No, it's not advisable to put e-mail addresses on here, can attract spam. You've done 2 now, only one to go. I have a photograph of Saunders family c1945, including Richard Saunders (I think) and wife. If correct, they would have owned the family house then, also 'Queenie'. Married name Weaver. John Betjeman lived next house to Pear Tree Cottage and wrote a poem to Queenie's daughter Sally for her wedding. I used to take my mother up to visit Queenie, Queenie died about 2000.

Answer this and that's your three posts.

Welcome to Rootschat, Mr OakRoom.

As you have probably read in previous posts you need to make 3 posts before you can use the Private Message system here on Rootschat.  The posts can be short!!

After you've made 2 more you should be able to correspond privately as well as here n R'chat, with the other members of your family who have already posted.

Lovely to see family members able to find each other through Rootschat.

I used to take my mother up to Uffington to visit Queenie in the 80's. Most of the inhabitants were Saunders family members 30 odd years ago. My grandmother was Florence Saunders 1878 to 1953. Packers and Fullers were associated families. Saunders cousins were over here April last year on holiday.

I have partial Tree.

It's been a while since I was here.

Sorry I lost the thread.

I've had files from My Uncle that include Queenie and our extended family.

I'm so pleased to see so many Saunders doing well.

I think of Queenie Granny (as I knew her) often and how Uffington had been the centre of so many wonderful stories.
