Title: MILES, Reginald Thomas
Post by: 4LauraM on Monday 02 March 15 18:45 GMT (UK)
Requesting a look-up, please.

My very 1st post & new here!

My maternal grandfather, MILES, Reginald Thomas arrived in Canada in 1899.
He was born in Christchurch, New Zealand 4 Sept 1877 and died 23 Dec 1964 Vancouver, BC
Canada.
I don't know how he got here or where he landed.

His father was Capt. Thomas MILES, b. Leith, Scotland 1819 & died 31 May 1879 in Footscray, Melbourne, AUS.

His 1st wife Ann THORNS, died of fever in Rio de Janeiro on the voyage of his ship, the Stirlingshire,
25 Feb 1857.

On 19 Feb 1849,Capt. Thomas MILES and Ann THORNS were married at Limehouse, Middlesex, England.  I don't know of any children from this marriage.

On 18 August 1858, Capt. Thomas MILES married Maria McDONALD at Bromley, Middlesex, England.
They had 10 children.
His 2nd wife, Maria McDONALD, died 17 Jan 1878 in Footscray, Melbourne.

My 1st question is how my grandfather Reginald Thomas MILES traveled from Australia to Canada.

My 2nd question is about any children from the marriage of Ann THORNS to Capt. Thomas MILES.

Thank you for your assistance.

Have you already got the two children and found deaths for them then ? Those were baptisms that I gave and a census.

Do you need Footscray Cemetery Register details, address (etc) and Memorial Inscription for Thomas and Maria MILES?

Sue ~ you have Footscray Cemetery register details, address, etc?

And the memorial inscriptions?

That would be wonderful! Thank you so very much!

I briefly saw a photo of Capt. Miles headstone but it was hard to read & I can't remember how/where I found it.

My 1st question is how ..... Reginald Thomas MILES traveled from Australia to Canada.

There’s a Vic BDM death registration for a Thomas MILES, aged 59, who died 1879, in Victoria #5560
There’s an online index giving the death/burial  as 2 June 1879, and burial for Footscray, Victoria, noting additional info via AIGS ref M160.

Now, as to the puzzle to get your Reginald, an orphan at a very young age, across to Vancouver, Canada….. I have no knowledge of how to help there, but I am sure there’s Aussie RChatters who can help.

Do you know how many of the children were with their parents in Victoria?  If so, do you have their names and ages?   That detail would usually be included on the Victoria BDM death cert for their parents ......    Is it possible that he was raised by an older sibling?

Do Canada's Archives hold passenger lists?

Cheers,  JM

Perhaps your lad was raised by an older brother?

Marriages

I can see the marriage, and several NZ births to the couple  1881- 1894.  There’s a possible NZ death for Alfred Henry at age 89 years in 1941, and sightings perhaps  for Emma too - aged 98 in 1954 or aged 92 in 1957

At the above link there’s a great deal of information that needs to be checked, but it seems that Reginald Thomas MILES, born 4 Sept 1877 at Christchurch, NZ died 23 Dec 1965 at Vancouver, BC, Canada, went to Canada from NEW ZEALAND in 1901….  The above link cites the supplier of the info ….. a great grandson of Ada Maria MILES.     There is also another descendant named, and he is the grandson of the last child to the couple …. So he is the grandson of Reginald Thomas MILES, and who supplied the info that Reginald was sent to the College of Wanganuie by his brothers …..  I am fairly sure that would be New Zealand schooling.

Here’s the link to the NZ Board at Rchat.   There’s some fine RChatters there, and from memory the School enrollments may be accessible to some of those NZ Chatters.

The inscription-

"In affectionate remembrance of Thomas Miles, died 31st May 1879, age 59 years.
Also his wife, Maria, died 16 January 1878, aged 40 years, and their children, Frank Goulson, died 24th May 1878 aged 3 years and 7 months. Amy Barbara died 5th July 1878, aged 6 years and 4 months."

Thomas Miles. Date  of interment 2nd June 1879. Aged 59 years. Of Braybrook. Private. Re-opening. Church of England. No location given

Maud (error on register?) Miles. Date of interment, 18th Jan. 1878. Aged 40 years. Of Maidstone. Re-opening. Church of England. No location given

Anne (error on register?) B Miles. Date of interment 6th July 1878. Aged 6 years 4 months. Of Upper Footscray.Re-opening. Church of England. No location given.

Frank Goulson Miles is not on the burial register at Footscray, but is noted as being memorialised at Footscray.

In view of the fact that each of the burials was noted as a re-opening and his date of death is the earliest, it is quite possible that he was buried there, but somehow omitted from the register.

I have the marraige cert. for the marriage of Reginald Thomas MILES to Anna Belle RAY 14 January 1901 at Camp McKinney (Kelowna), BC.

A Don Armitage has done research on Capt. Thomas Miles & his ship the Stirlingshire.

It was my understanding that a brother (or 1/2 sibling, Mother - Ann Thorns) sent Reginald to the College of Waganuie (sp?).

Mr R MILES, an Adult Male.
Ship  Aorangi
Departed Wellington  (5th January 1899/
Arrived Vancouver (other ports also listed, but that particular Mr R Miles had contracted to land at Vancouver)
When  January 1899

This is for an R, MILES from NZ to Vancouver, in 1899.   You will need to check and cross check to establish who was R Miles, and what age for that person at that time, before you can even start to consider if it may be your chap.

Hi there,

You will notice that both Cando and I have already provided various live links for you to click on and read through that take you directly to the info re the Stirlingshire voyages and the suggestion re Reginald attending the College of Waganuie.

If you were to ask on the New Zealand Board for assistance, I am sure they can help you with New Zealand enquiries.   New Zealand is a separate country from Australia.

Incredible information.

You have filled in a piece of truly valuable information about my grandfather
that was driving me bananas!

I am at a loss for words - thank you!

My Mom, MILES Dorothy Edna, was one of 5 children born to Reginald & Anna Belle MILES.

I have visited the grave site of my grandparents at Mountain View cemetery.

I am also blessed to have a very extensive genealogy report covering the GLASS, RAY and VANDERVOORT families from my grandmother's side (RAY, Anna Belle).

And by odd coincidence it was written by a distant cousin.

I am still confuddled as to how a person can die in 1878, and yet in June 1879 be noted as a widow with seven children.....  To me,  I would need to spend the pennies and obtain at least one of those death certs....  See

Hi JM,
Well I would guess the problem may be poor journalistic research.

The Victorian Death Index shows-

MILES Maria Mcdonald (Birth Place ENGL)
Mother Jeanette Henrietta BURTT
Father John
Age 40
Year 1878
Reg Number 1677

The headstone agrees with this year

The given name (MAUD) on the register appears to be an error.  I have looked again at the original register and the writing on the page is good clear script.  The given name entered is MAUD. No-one named Maud MILES, aged 40  died in Victoria in 1878.
The burial took place 18th January 1878

Sue

ADDING,
I do of course agree with you that a certificate wold likely settle the question. ;D

Thanks Sue,

but I am still confuddled ....

on her other thread (the one about Thomas MILES who died Victoria 1879,) there's a William MILES giving evidence at the Inquest into Thomas' sudden death.  That William is noted as a son of the deceased in one of the newspaper cuttings.

I suspect the only way for our OP to learn IF that William is a son and also to learn if he is a brother OR a half brother to Reginald Thomas MILES ( the OPs person of interest in this thread) .... is to obtain the 1879 death cert for Thomas.

To my way of thinking .... Well ....
Otherwise the OP is only able to speculate and make 'probable' or 'likely' or 'possible' suggestions as comments on their own research.  And thus NOT able to go back further on Thomas MILES tree with their own confident research findings.

Cheers,  JM

Can you confirm where the 1862 birth was registered please.   Do you actually have a copy of the civil registration of the birth?    I can see the INDEX entry for a William Mcdonald MILES in the second quarter of 1862 in England.   Vol 1c pg 613.   From that registration, what information is given for his father .....
