Title: Ipstones churchyard
Post by: templeton14 on Tuesday 03 March 15 10:00 GMT (UK)
Hi all,
Is anyone familiar with the churchyard of St Leonards at Ipstones? I have burial records for a number of ancestor's, the last being around 1860 when my branch of the family left the village. I'm wondering if its worth a visit (I'll have to drive over from Warrington), are there many old headstones preserved? I don't mind not finding anything if there are headstones to look at, but I don't want to drive over to find one or two headstones in a field. I understand that the churchyard is closed to new burials now? What condition is it in?
Many thanks in advance,
Sarah

Hi Sarah

Lovely part of the country...drove through Ipstones a couple of weeks ago!....

Looking at web pics, certainly looks like gravestones are still standing.....some transcriptions are here  http://places.wishful-thinking.org.uk/STS/Ipstones/StLeonard.html.......

Thanks Sarah,
Do you know if the image of "the cemetery" on the wishful thinking website is part of the church, or is there a second cemetery site? I think we'll make a day of it as I have burials in Alstonefield too.
Many thanks
Sarah

Hi Sarah have you managed to to get to the Ipstones churchyard yet. It is such a lovely place set in the country . I go there every visit I make back to the UK as have grandparents buried there.
Some of the graves have been neglected due to their age and a few of the headstones are starting to fall over as well. Who are looking for in there? It may also pay you to check the Foxt church yard as well . As being a small community area there could also be ancestors in there as well as i found some of my own in there. Also just up the road from the Foxt churchyard you will find the site of the old church which has now been pulled down and where it stood is a plaque set in the stone wall telling you it was the site of the old church. One of my ancestors was a preacher there in the 1800's .Also round the corner from the Ipstones churchyard is a little dairy and along from this dairy is the Ipstones church hall. The people in there are so friendly and they made us a cup of tea and something to eat and they can help you with any info you may wish to find about your ancestors they have computers set up in there to help you.
hope this all helps. by now you probably have been over there but you will know for future reference
cheers maggie

Hi Maggie,
Thank you so much for your reply. No, I haven't had chance to visit yet. I think it'll be one for next year now. It'll be good to go armed with some information though, so thank. I'm looking for Bowers and Gould families primarily. We also have family who were in Foxt, so it was certainly on my to do list when I do eventually visit. I have no idea if there were any headstones in the first place, let alone if they are still there, but it'll still be interesting to visit the area,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
I live just a few miles from Ipstones and as you haven't managed to get there yet I am happy to go and have a look around the graves for you.  Ipstones is a lovely little village in a very pretty area.  If you send me any details you have I will have a look and see if I can find anything.

Hi Sarah,
Sorry have not been in touch but had  a few days away.
I am not going back to Ipstones till my next visit end of July next year. I was going to say to you some one may read your question and offer some help if live in  the area and low behold chris has so hopefully you will find your ancestors resting places.
I have had a look at Alf Beards site again and he never got round to adding  more names to churchyards. He knew about my grandparents  (Joseph and Hannah Birch ) who are buried in Ipstones and he was going to record them but sadly never did .
Anyway as I said checked  a couple of places and have found a Louisa Gould 1874 in Ipstones this may be one of your Gould's  also looked at  St Giles Cheadle and a few Bower's there, and  St John and St Peters in Alton also have some buried there.  There could be a connection with them as well so when you visit these places may be worth a look at even Chris may be able to do this for you. I have always found people on this site so helpful in the past. Funny thing is found no Gould's but it does not mean they are not there as I said Alf never recorded every grave in churchyards.
Have an item I hope to attach to this which is interesting .
Cheers
Maggie

Hi Sarah , could not get the attachment to work so suggest you Google Joseph Gould from Grindon Staffordshire 1874- 1941.
There is a tree here also photos worth checking out.
This would be something if your lot, wouldn't it. !!!!

Hi Chris,
That is such a kind offer, thank you so much! I'm primarily looking for a George Gould who was buried there in Nov 1869 and his wife Keziah Gould, buried May 1861, but I'm interested in any Gould, Bowers or Blore/Bloor graves. I will get over there eventually, but I have 2 young children so it's difficult at the moment. Thank you again for your offer, it is very much appreciated,
Sarah

Hi Maggie,
I've certainly found Alf's site very useful in recent years, though I too have found graves that were missing from the site. It's fabulous that he took the time to do what he did though, and I would certainly be happy to look around churchyards local to myself for people who couldn't get to the area, you can get so much information from a headstone (my husband thinks I'm weird for the amount of time I've spent wandering around churchyards at weekends lol). The Louisa Gould find is interesting and one I'll have a look into. I'm itching to get over there and have a look around for myself!

Hi Sarah .Just checking again as I see you are looking for Bloor ?Blore names.
I have a John Birch who married Elizabeth  Bloor in 1822 in Kingsley . She was born in Rugley .
Elizabeth Bloor and John and their children are all buried in Kingsley.
Does this family ring a bell with you.?
Last time I mentioned the Goulds to you at Alton there is a lot there in the St Peters Churchyard and a George Gould 1844 I wrote this down and not sure whether he was born that year or died then along with him at this place is James Gould 1873, Germain 185?  5 years old, Samuel 1843,  2years old, William 1845, 7 years and John (Father) 1858,  42 years . Quite sad really to see children so young buried.

Had a bit of a grin about your hubby and looking at churchyards.
Mine used to do the same now he loves going and looking at historical  things in them .  Down  here he goes and looks up all the old All blacks  that have past away graves.  When he gets older he may show interest in ancestry things perhaps . Depends on how keen he is in following things up. I only wish i had asked my Father more about his side of the family when he was alive but as he was a lot older than my mother and born in 1895 I was very young when he passed away, plus had young children myself and was not really interested at all .
It took me 20 years to finally  get the tree together  hence his  Great Grandparents buried at Iptsones .
I also think there may of been some Bloors buried in the little Foxt churchyard which  I saw there on a visit . Anyway I am sure you will find who you are looking for. Maybe I will see you at the Ipstones churchyard when I visit again  next year. 1st August

cheers
Maggie :)

Hi Sarah and Maggie
It's been very interesting following your thread. As I said we live very close to Ipstones and I will get over next week.  We are looking after our little grandson this weekend as my daughter and her husband are going to a wedding.  It's the first time we've had him on our own!  I had to laugh when you were talking about looking around churchyards, my husband gets dragged along too but he's always the one who finds the graves. I'm going to take him along to Ipstones so hopefully he'll bring us a bit of luck finding the headstones. Did you know there is a BLOOR society. I think it's open to anyone who has Bloor names in their family. If you google Bloor society, you will find it. I think it's bloor.org

Hi Chris,
You never know what you can find or learn on here do you!!!! :o
I will look up this Bloor site you have mentioned to both Sarah and myself since I too have a connection to the Bloor name.
It's late here now so popping off to bed so tomorrow I will check it out with interest.
It is so good of you to be able to checkout the Ipstones Churchyard for Sarah she will appreciate this I think . I can remember years ago someone kindly answered my quest about the old silk mills in Leek as had my Joseph Birch buried in Ipstones working there as a young boy and was interested in knowing about the trade. This person found the grave at Ipstones and kindly sent me a photo of it. I was so thrilled to get it and living half way round the world was keen to visit myself to see it . I have made three trips back and fit a visit in each time we come  over .  It is so nice to know there are so many on this site willing to help in some way or another.
Out of context  do you know the peak weavers in King street as thinking of staying there next year on our way down from Scotland . I am wanting to know whether it is close to the St Edwards church as would like to have a look round this place since Joseph and ann were married there. that is one place have not stopped off at yet. Here we go talking about churchyards again !!!!
Well off to bed as going to be a long day tomorrow like you have grandchildren calling in to visit  . for the day . Make the most of it as they grow up too fast.

cheers
Maggie

Hi Maggie
We live in Leek and The Peak Weavers in King Street is just around the corner from our house!  The area where we live is actually called The Silk Quarter, because of all the silk mills there in bygone days.  The mills have now been converted into nice apartments so it is better than them being demolished.  The Peak Weavers - a rather nice hotel and restaurant used to be The Loreto Convent until about 40 years ago.  It's only about 10 minutes walk from St Edward's church which backs onto the Park and is well worth seeing.   I'd love to show you around Leek when you pay a visit!
Chris

Hi Chris yes thought it may be close . I would like to met up when there maybe you can contact me at (*)
Better not venture too far off this blog with Leek as supposed to be talking about  Ipstones .
I will check out the Bloor site as well sometime today as well. Rushing to get a christmas cake made before the family turn up.
Hope you can help Sarah with her quest or point her in the right direction .

A quick message just to say I'm really sorry I haven't managed to get to Ipstones. I have been quite poorly this week and on some strong antibiotics that have made me feel miserable  :(
Hopefully I will get there next week!

Just a try out of the blue.
You mentioned Leek in the post above. I've been trying to find out about Alton Towers during the the WW2 years. I know it was used as a training camp for the North Staffordshire Regiment as the details appear on my father-in-law's army records for 1940 but from then on nothing. He lived in Leek all his life, except for his holiday in North Africa and Italy that is.
Just one of my many family history unfinished boxes. I don't really want to get tangled up with Kew yet.
Any ideas?

Hi  Can not help you with Alton Towers but can help you find out about Leek and who you are searching for (who is that anyway as you did not put a name )
You may pick up a reply from someone on here if you try question under LEEK and the persons name .
that   is option one.
Option 2  and I have used this with with good results
it is the roots web mailing list.  I have it in my bookmarks under archiver.rootweb.ancestry I think you may have to google this . when you find it  go to mailing lists  and click on it then find a mailing list and type in Leek up will come Leek and low . Click on this and subscribe and write your request here and hopefully you will get some replies. I found this site very good when trying to find my family which had lived all their lives in Leek .One thing I must tell you is when you subscribe click on DIGEST MODE  otherwise you will get mail that is of no concern to you.
Hope this helps.  Have not had a look but you may be able to get to this thru this site here I have not had a look . Hope this helps.
Maggie

Hello Ourbill
There is a  good website about Alton Towers - altontowersmemories.net
On it there is a whole section about Alton Towers during the war years. With some picture too.
As Maggie said, you haven't mentioned any names, although if your father in law is still alive, the rules of Rootschat don't allow you to name anyone that is living.

Hi everyone,
I hope you're feeling better Chris! Maggie is right, health first! Not the best weather to be wandering around churchyards either.
Thanks for the info regarding the Bloor society. I had a look at their website and they meet a few miles away from my parent's house (I grew up in Stoke-on-Trent). I'll certainly be dropping into one of their sessions, I know very little about that line - it might just be that magical breakthrough that I need  ;D
On a separate note Chris, I see that you have Lawton's in your line. I also have a Lawton line in Stoke-on-Trent (from the Keele and Audley areas). Maybe we share a link?

Hi Sarah
At long last I have managed to visit Ipstones Churchyard.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find a grave for George GOULD, d. 1869 or Keziah GOULD, d. 1861.  Some of the graves were in very poor condition and difficult to read, but I don't think their graves were there.
I did find a Keziah GOULD, of Stones Farm, Ipstones who had died on 21 July (it looked like 1888), buried with her brother James GOULD. Also a Ella GOULD, wife of David GOULD, both in the same grave. - These were in the newer part, across the lane from the church.
There were also some BLOOR graves, John, Phoebe and James.
I took down the details so I will transcribe them in the next couple of days and send you a PM
Best wishes
Chris

Hi Chris,
Wow, thank you so much for that information. The Keziah Gould and David Gould graves are of my GG grandmother's brother and sister ( they were Keziah and George's children)
Very interesting regarding the Bloor's, and I'm sure it'll fit in somewhere, but its a matter of figuring it out now. I know my Elizabeth Bloor (who became a Gould) named John as her father on her marriage certificate, and it the marriage was witnessed by a Phoebe!
I am over the moon that you've found these graves, thank you so much! I wish I could return the favour!

Hi Sarah and Maggie
I really enjoyed visiting the Churchyard.  Although I've been through Ipstones lots of times, I have never visited the church as it is at the end of a lane on the outskirts of the village.  It's located in such a pretty place.  The older graves are around the church but the more recent ones are in an area just across the lane.

I have sent you a personal message Sarah, with more details
Chris

I am a new member and you may already have the information you need, but I may be able to add something as we both have George and Kezia Gould in our ancestry. I live in Australia but have visited Ipstones twice and upon my last visit (2006) I didn't find George and Kezia's grave but I found the gravestone, albeit in two pieces leaning horizontally against the wall of the church. The inscription read 'My race is run & thine is running, Prepare for death for judgement coming. Of course you are part of the Bowers family and the Finneys of Hayesgate. I have traced them back to the mid 1500's.

Hello Sarah,
I hope that you receive this (my second attempt) it appears that we have ancestors in common. I live in Australia but on my scond visit to Ipstones in 2006 I found George and Kezia Goulds headstone but not their grave. It was found leaning horizontally againt the church in two pieces, it read "My race is run & thine is running, Prepare for death for judgement coming." I believe that I recently discovered where Kezia's father and brother are buried but can't verify it from here. I have all the Hayesgate Finneys, Balls, Dales and Chapmans. Kezia's sister Esther married John Lane the licensee of The Red Lion and later the Sea Lion, both in Ipstones. My grt grandmother was Francis Elizabeth Lane d/o George Henry Lane s/o John and Esther. I realise that you may already have found what you need, but please let me know if theere are any gaps that I may help with. Cheers Valerie

Hi Valerie,
I really hope that you see this message, I know its been a while since you sent yours. Shortly after the initial thread regarding the churchyard at Ipstones and my plans to get over to visit, my father suddenly passed away, followed by my brother and mother-in-law, all within 18 months, so it all fell by the wayside. I've just started to pick it up again and try to pick up where I left off, so this evening is the first time that I've been on here for a while. Thank you for getting in touch and how interesting that we share the Gould link. Yes, I have Esther Gould and John Lane in my tree. I am descended from Esther's brother George Bowers Gould, who married Elizabeth Blore. Thank you for the grave inscription, I wonder if the headstone is still there 12 years later?
Sarah

Hi Maggie
I have just seen your post about IPSTONES and of particular interest is the plaque photo.
Have you anymore details. Is it close to the church. My ancestors were the Critchlow family and were I think We're instigators of the Primitive Methodist church in the area.
Many thanks
