Title: Looking for the Marriage of Seaforth highlander William Norma Whitehead to Iris
Post by: miragedcs42 on Sunday 08 March 15 16:14 GMT (UK)
Good day to all of you helpers
My question relates to my wifes grandfather who was in the above regiment, I have tried all of my known routes to gain info regarding his marriage but have failed.
His name was william Norman Whitehead B 1904
His wifes name was Iris May Hope Wade
His serial no was E813741 or maybe E813/41
he enlisted on 7th Feb 1922 and was transfered to Army reserve on 30th November 1929
His certificate states "on completion of colour service Para369(1) KR (1928)
I know his first Daughter was born and died in 1930 and his second was born in Ismalia 1931 presumably on the way home to England.
Any Help welcome
Thanks

Normal enlistment for a Regular was 12 years made up of a period in uniform (with the colours) followed by the balance in the Army Reserve. Reservists attended two weeks a year and were on half-pay. If a war started they would be recalled to the colours. They could serve a further four years in the AR after their 12 was up.

From what you say he should have been at home from November 1929. He may have returned to uniform from the Reserve. The 1st Battalion were in Dover in 1931. The 2nd Battalion were in India. So you could be right about why the daughter was born on the Suez Canal.

Unique 7 digit army numbers were introduced in 1920. His regiment was given the block 2809001 to 2865000. So the first character may be a 2 and not an E. If so you can apply to the MOD for his record.

Hi thanks for the info, I will look closer at the army records I have regarding his service, although they are in poor condition they do show certificates he gained. When I have this I will be better able to find out more.
I have requested a certificate from the GRO over two weeks ago and as yet they have not come back to say they can't find him.
I know the date he celebrated his golden wedding and I have a wedding photo showing him in kilt and various Indian guest's so I am sure that he married in India.

hello M,

Services Marriage records (and Births & Deaths) in India are held at the British Library in London, that avenue is probably your next best bet.
