Found this old photograph which I believe was taken in,or near to, Blyth, Northumberland. The sign on the building appears to say The Regent.
The children seem to be on a carnival float......Any ideas would be gratefully received as the photograph is one of many with nothing written on the back.
-
My memory may be playing tricks, but was The Regent a cinema?
As to the float, there could be several reasons for folks dressing up on the back of a wagon and parading through the town.
I couldn't help noticing that you have both Thornton and Henderson in your surname list. I have two Henderson brothers who married two Thornton sisters in Amble. If you are by any chance connected to them then we are related.

Can't ever remember a cinema The Regent, woulden't bet on it mind!
I'd say that it is possibly the carnival parading along Regent Street, which is still in Blyth.
Loco hodgetts posted a pic some way back of the carnival in aid of Thomas Knight hospital going along Regent street, perhaps this is that same day.

I remember 4 cinemas in Blyth, none called The Regent.
The name is on the building behind the float and it looks more like a pub but I can't find one with that name on my list of Blyth pubs past and present.

It doesn't ring a bell with me either. I can remember 4 cinemas too, the Wallaw, the Essoldo, the Roxy - became a dance hall - and the Central.
Do you know the date of the photo? could be 1920s? going by the children's clothes.
ps you could be right Dolly D!

Sorry, but I do not see a name on the wall saying the Regent., even with my magnifier .
I do remember there were quite a few pubs along that road for years, not so many today,
but no Regent.....
Carnivals too were held for many reasons.. but this one is certainly not of my era ..

You need to move the slider at the bottom of the picture to see the rest of it - then 'The Regent' can be seen along the building

Ahh Christine , never thought of that! Senior moment again.
Thanks Dolly x

I dreamed i passed this building last night LOL. But i think i know why and maybe you guys can clear it up for me.
Driving up Regent Street last night i went along the curve to get onto Hodgson's Road, the first small block of terraced houses with sandstone name plaques on either end, i know Disreali Street has "Places" on it but when i passed them last night, i saw "Regent(s) Terrace"? Maybe my eyes playing tricks on me. Funny thing is, when i saw the photo the other day, my first inclination was down that it was took down that end of the street (maybe because it's Regent Street lol)

Well Blythian,
If you were driving past Regents Terrace last night, or rather you dreamt you were, then your dream was true . There actually was a Regents Terrace in 1911.
I found a family there on the census.

Just to add, Regent Terrace appears to have been off Thompson St and Goshen St,
I shall take a toddle down that way tomorrow or Saturday, and snoop around ...

Re: the cinema's. Don't forget the Theatre Royal.
-
Ahh yes, as a kid spent many a Saturday morning at the Theatre Royal. Up in the gallery too!
Happy days! Dolly

There looks like there is a C at the end, possibly going around a corner - could it have been the Regent Cafe?
-
Re the Regent Terrace.
Well spotted Blythian, there isin't much wrong with your eyes as there is indeed two stone plaques on those houses you past displaying "Regent Tce". there are only 4 houses in between the plaques,
but on the 1911 census there were many more, However the whole road is now Hodgsons Road, being changed in memory of the Hodgson mill owner.
I know this does not change the question of the Carnival sign "Regent" but found it very interesting indeed, as did my better half!

My vote is for an Easter parade. Bunnies, lambs, palm fronds, all the kids wearing white or light colors and pretty dressed up.

I'd wondered about that too Janis, trouble is which year was it !
Also more importantly were about in Regent Street was the pic taken.
I remember when a child we had some great carnivals for the Miners Picnic days.
That was when Blyth was in its hay -days.

Do you remember the Pineapple Inn that used to be on Regent St. ? corner Bowes St.? My friend's Dad was publican there. I just looked on Google maps and it seems to have gone now.
