Title: German national in England 1914
Post by: mentmore on Saturday 14 March 15 22:53 GMT (UK)

What would have happened to a German national living and married with a family in London at the outbreak of WW1?

He would have been arrested, and sent to an Internment camp.

It looks as if the records may have been destroyed.

It depends how old he was, it was only men of fighting age, between 18 to 50, who were interned from 1914 to 1919. My great grandfather who lived in London wasn't interned.

My Grandfather's sister married a Moravian in the early 1900's. He was then arrested & interned for the duration of WW1.
He was again arrested at the start of WW2 but released and allowed to resume his normal civilain life

Thank you all for your replies.

My German relative was born about 1879, married 1907 Lewisham.
I can't find a death for him, as yet, his widow died 1958, in her Will it states she is a widow.

Do you want to give us a name and we'll see if we can find him?

Does anyone know if it was only people who were born in Germany that were interned? My great grandparents were both of German birth, but my grandfather was born here. He wasn't interned although he would have been about 35 in WW1, but he wasn't in the UK army either. In WW2 he was in the Home Guard.

Hi,

His name is Frederick R.H.E. Buckholtz born Germany about 1879.
He married Mary Emma Varney 1907 Lewisham, they had children the last one born about 1914.

I have some paperwork and 1911 census for the family.

Mary Emma died 1958 her name is now listed as Buckholt.

I have a list of burials for Knockaloe Camp, Isle of Man, that shows Turks and Austrians as well as Germans.
There also appears to be some Irish, too?!

Manx Heritage have produced a guide:

Sorry, my mistake.
I had been researching another side of the family, Mary Emma Varney, and entered the wrong name.
Frederick Buckholtz married as you say Kate Varney. Kate and Mary Emma were sisters.

Hi

The link where you can find interned men during WWI is this one:

http://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Search

By the way there are the names Buchhold and Buchholz.

There are many Buchholz but no Frederick R H E.

Regards
Svenja

Many thanks for the link showing men interned during WW1.

Best wishes

If you join the Anglo-German Family history Society and pay a small fee, they will check their various lists for references to this person.
There are numerous Home Office archives at TNA which include lists.
