Title: Hurd family
Post by: silver cloud on Wednesday 18 March 15 19:59 GMT (UK)
Help
Am I going round in circles or just lost the plot ???
Trying to find the birth of said Kate Hurd, 1891 census says born in scarborough, living at mill yard
1901 as her living in Sheffield still listed as born in Scarborough,
1911 as her born in Bradford, I believe she was born (illegitimately) to the servant Jane Maguire and head of household John Hurd and his wife in the 1891 census was Christiana Bell, but I cannot trace her birth to confirm
Any ideas please
Thanks SC

Hi Carole,

1891 3967 /95 /36

Jane Maguire 22 yrs
Kate Maguire 4 months
Visitors in the household of John and Christiann Hurd.

Does Jane then marry/ cohabit with Thomas Hurd?

Are Thomas and John, the same person?

Heywood

Thanks SC

Yes that's who I found. It us confusing. ???

There is a marriage in Scarborough 1861 Thomas McGuire and Catherine Raftree are among spouses.
The couple are in 1861 census I think.

Then 1871 4841/12/17 has this family :
Thomas Maguire   40 yrs Seive maker
Catherine Maguire 38 yrs
James Maguire   11 yrs
Ruth Maguire   10 yrs
Mary Maguire   8 yrs
Thomas Maguire    6 yrs
Philip Mguire   4 yrs
Margret Mguire 2 yrs

And then the one you have  in 1881 with Thomas - Seive maker with younger children - the older ones being William and Jane  :-\ who may fit with Philip and Margaret's ages.
There are births in Helmsley for some of the children.

On her marriage to Mr Hurd, what is her father's name and occupation?

Hi Heywood
On her marriage certificate it as her father as Thomas Maguire and her husband is down as a widower, which corresponds with him being married to Christiana first. I believe she passed away.

Thanks for your help Heywood,
it is totally confusing, cos Jane had a sister called Margaret that married someone called Mc Court, so it cant be her. I think this is going to puzzle me for a while  ???
Thanks again

Hi Heywood
It was Catherine Maguire who married henry McCourt in 1913 Catherine is on the 1891 census for Scarborough, and on the 1901 with her mother Catherine, this is where it gets confusing ??? are they the same family that are at Cow house Bank in the 1881 census.

I think they are the same family but you will have to compare the various bits of information.
1861 3604/68/18 Thomas Macguire is a 'corn ripple (riddle)  maker'   ??? which sounds like a sieve maker to me.

Looking at Ruth
1861 birth in Monmouth.
1871 born Monmouthshire
1881 4814/103/8
Possibly a servant born Stillington, Yorkshire

This is interesting
1891 3947/93/4
William Maguire 25 yrs, b Scarborough, with cousins, James 27 yrs, Mary, 26 yrs and Ruth 28 yrs - all born Whitby.

1901 and 1911 Ruth looks to be in Whitby.

Of course, none of this helps with Jane.
She could be the Margaret shown in 1871. There is another Margaret later.
It is all confusing.

I would doubt that if you could find a birth for Kate Maguire Hurd it would name her father though.
